Burly

Hi fellow Hiveians,

The other day we got all kinds of fantastic looking burls when we were out for a nice hike!

Burly

It's been kind of interesting and funny. I haven't paid that much attention until recently to some of the small things that occur when we are out for a hike or something. I didn't realize but there are a lot of really incredible and awesome looking wood burls out there!

A wood burl is, to my understanding, a scab on a tree essentially. The tree had lost a branch or had some other damage to it at one point and it scabbed it over with some bark. In the process, the bark and other stuff grew and became larger and ends up looking kind of like a tumor.

Some of the burls can be fairly small like this one here and others can be fairly large but it depends on the size of the tree of course and how long it's been there.

This one here is pretty wild! There are a whole bunch of burls on this tree, I loved it. It's almost like a polycystic disease that people get, maybe I'm weird for thinking of it that way hahaha.

Some are pretty small in comparison and not really worth trying to harvest since that wouldn't be a good use of it. Perhaps doing a small one like this on a big tree wouldn't be too bad though, not much for the tree to heal perhaps.

We did see some giant ones! This one here was the biggest one we saw up until our most recent example we are going to see below.

This one was absolutely giant! I think it was easily 3 feet in diameter. I would love to come back when this tree falls down to harvest this thing but we won't be living in the area by the time that happens lol

Overall it was pretty nice to see all of these crazy burls and I don't know if it's because we are noticing things more or if it was just random luck but I know that I haven't seen this many burls before!

Haha yeah it's definitely strange if you don't see them! It's an awesome looking piece of a tree to use though! Look up "burl bowls" on the internet, they are incredible!

I am happy that you left them in the trees and didn't feel compelled to turn them into salad bowls.

Hahaha yeah, as much as I wanted to I refrained from doing it! I don't want to fell a tree I don't plan on using or have the means to. If I own some property in the future and see a tree with a burl on it, I'll definitely do my research and figure out what to do with the tree but more importantly harvest the burl if I can! I would obviously plant something in its place but I know some people do some crazy stuff with burls.

I worked with a guy from Kentucky for about 3 years who would often rant and rave about burl harvesting.. I thought it was interesting, although his methods were a little morally questionable so I couldn't get that into it. I'm glad you don't have his mentality 😂 if not the others, he woulda taken down those last two in a heart beat

Yeah I know, I think I've heard that the way people do it is brutal and not good for the trees! If you're going to try and harvest a burl, just cut the thing down instead of ruining the tree and walking away lol

Hope you're doing well man, happy new year!

Yeah.. he definitely did make good use out of some of the trees, but I think more often than not he would just chop em to rot.

Thanks dude! Doin ok. I hope all is well for you and the fam! Happy new year!
