Beautiful Bluegill

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share a picture of the beautiful fish that we caught the other day!

Beautiful Bluegill

The little man has been excited, lately the weather has been good enough for us to go out there and do some decent fishing! A lot of the fish that we typically catch are not really the coolest looking fish but one of the ones that the little man loves to catch, the Bluegill Sunfish, is really a beautiful specimen indeed!

Catching sunfish isn't always my kind of time because it's not as fun of a fight as it would be to catch a bigger fish like a Bass or a Pickerel or even better, Trout or Pike. Even still though, catching a few sunfish instead of catching nothing at all really isn't a bad thing! For us, anytime you catch something it's a day that was worth it for the little bit of entertainment.

This time of year around here, it's sunfish spawning season! You can see the lot of the fellas trying to attract some mates to do the dirty with and make some little offspring. This time of year is both fun and a little sad in some ways. You are pretty much guaranteed to catch something when they are all out like that. You know that if you throw a hook right ontop of them they are going to bite it, either to eat it because they are hungry defending their little nest hole or if they are trying to combat something to get it away so it won't ruin their hole to attract a mate.

What can be sad about it is that you could also end up hurting one of them pretty badly, or killing them and all they are trying to do is to basically have sex hahaha. We've been pretty good lately about not killing them, and now that I said it we are sadly going to end up doing just that the next time we go fishing hahaha.

The day was quite windy when we were there but I did manage to get some shots where you can see how clear and interesting the water was, with a bunch of the fish hanging out there in their nests! The sunfish breed has all kinds of different varieties. There were 3 varieties with us that day, the bluegill, the pumpkinseed and one other whos name is slipping my mind.

The bluegill though is definitely the most beautiful of the bunch! Those things look wicked cool lol.

The colors on the fella are so vibrant! I love the blue near it's gills and mouth, which is certainly why they call them bluegill lol but it adds such a cool element to the fish. The bass, pickerel or some other fish that we catch are cool because they are bigger fish but they don't have nearly as interesting of a color pattern as these fellas do!

I know that trout can have some awesome patterns, but sadly we've never caught a trout out in the wild yet so we can't really say too much in that regard. With the sunfish though, it has quite a few different elements to it that are so interesting. The black and orange spot at the end of the gill is cool, as it's got it on both sides. It makes you wonder how these fish got these crazy patterns. I wonder if depending on the size of that blue dot at the end of the gills, it improves or hurts the chances of it reproducing lol. Size matters in the fish world too it seems! Bastards.

The little man and I are just starting the fishing season, so this was a nice little outing to get a few things started! We've found a friend that also likes to fish so we are going to see if we can do some fishing trips together and see how it goes!

Nice! That's awesome, getting some dinner that's for sure hahaha. I'm eventually going to cook what we catch! I don't trust the ponds and lakes in the close area around us though, so I wouldn't eat anything out of it lol but when we go to the rivers and lakes an hour or two north, that's where it's a lot cleaner!

What a beautiful Red-Eared Sunfish! I just posted about some panfish too. Glad to see you enjoying fishing!

Is that the official name of them? I have a challenge with the various species of sunfish lol. Pumpkinseed, bluegill, some others here and there. They are all sunfish for sure but I don’t know the specifics. I do like the red dot on them though that’s cool!

My son and I are always fishing! Spent all day doing that today although we sadly didn’t catch anything lol

There was a lake that we would visit as kids and there was this one rocky corner filled with bluegill that were so excited about what we were throwing in there that you could eventually throw hooks in there without bait and still catch them. That was 30 years ago abut I still remember how crazy that was.

That's awesome! Yeah sometimes you get to toss the hook itself in and catch them. It was hilarious, a few years ago my son put a leaf on a hook and threw it in and the sunfish went for it and he caught one lol. It was too funny, they will try to bite anything sometimes! Great memories for sure!

It's crazy to me that these situations can and do happen but then on other days you come with all the latest tech and really tasty bait and the fish want nothing to do with it. A delicious leaf though, that does the trick.

The fun of catching fish and eating it yourself is not the same as buying it from a shop. Some time ago when it was winter here too, my friends and I caught it and cooked it at night.
