Little Birdie

The Grays Harbor bay, Hoquiam, Wash.

I was reading about colors in photography today, on photographylife.com. They have a wealth of material for beginners, and even though I've been at it for three years now, I still pretty much feel like a beginner.

This photo seemed like good practice at contrasting warm (red, orange, yellow) and cool (green, blue, violet) colors. I can see how the warm colors could be viewed as more active (they certainly jump out of the photo), while the blue fades into the background.

The contrast is there, but I'm not sure what I was trying to do with it (that's a failure for sure, that I don't know the story I was trying to tell). The original intent was to show the vastness of the area, the remoteness, and the tiny bird (on the dock piling) in that grand theatre.

Of course, my zoom lens is not quite powerful enough to focus, at that distance, on the bird. You probably wouldn't notice it without me telling you.

I suppose the warm and cool colors could add another layer: they could tell the story of nature interrupted by man. The dock pilings, the rusted beam, the point of land itself, all are manmade artifacts jutting out into the natural elements of sky and water.

Nature is often associated with the feminine, or given feminine attributes (Mother Nature, and all), and the feminine is sometimes seen as passive. So in my photo we have the passive (cool) feminine penetrated by the active (warm-colored), phallic-shaped, 'man'-made elements.

Ha! I'll deny that I was consciously trying to tell a sex story with this image. But, they say men (males) think about sex every 8 seconds. So, I guess I can't deny that sex was at least subconsciously on my brain when I was composing this shot.

At any rate, I hope you like my photo.

Have a great sexy day. ;)

Sex or not, it's a cool shot... and it's a lovely part of the world. We come through there from time to time, usually in connection with getting from Port Townsend to the UFO/Paranormal Summit in Ocean Shores.

=^..^=

It is a lovely part of the world! We should have coffee sometime, when you come through. Unless it's too weird to meet a Hivean IRL. :)

It is a beautiful photo of a simple and attractive spot. The openness of sea and sky, with those delicate shades of blue and the reflections, contrasts with that tongue of land and the upright pilings. The little bird is like a tilde over an i. Thank you and best regards, @cliffagreen.

Thank you! Interesting point about the tilde; I didn't think of that.
