Being a father of two little ones has led me to relive nostalgic series from my childhood, since I have chosen to watch with them cartoons from my past, which I consider to have a better plot and teaching than the current ones. It is undoubtedly a quality time that I spend with them, and at the same time I enjoy these good productions. The advantage of watching these series again is that being an adult you can grasp things that you could not understand as a child, and I am sure that is the intention of the author, beyond entertaining, is to convey a message to all its viewers, including a belief.

In the case of Yugioh, it is a series set in ancient Egypt, although the events take place in the present approximately 5000 years later, and the main focus is the fight of cards, specifically the duel of monsters where a competitor faces another in order to defeat him through his creatures. This duel is actually its main attraction, since apart from the impressive monsters that appear there you can glimpse quite advanced combat strategies between the duelists. There are 3 types of cards for the battle, one of monsters, one of magic and one of trap, each competitor has these in his deck that is made up of more than 40 cards, and from there each one uses his way of fighting.

Talking about the fight itself, each competitor must shuffle his deck before starting and place it face down on the field, then take 5 cards to start the duel. The fight is done in turns and as the duel progresses each competitor draws one card from his deck per turn; the interesting thing about this is that chance comes into the fight, because after shuffling the cards and start, no one knows which card is coming, and from there, as they draw, they build their strategy. The idea to win is to end the life points of your opponent, which in the first season of the series consist of 2000, the goal is to bring them to zero.

The creator behind the game

On the scene enters a man named Maximilian Pegasus, who is an exceptional painter with a sad past, the person he loved and was going to marry died tragically, leading him to despair, and the tireless search to bring back his beloved. That quest took him to Egypt, where a mysterious character named Shadis guides him to a hidden chamber that holds a series of magical objects called the millennium items, it turns out that each of these items are intended to be used by certain people in this era, and precisely Pegasus is one of them. By obtaining the millennium eye, Maximilian can read people's minds, in addition to using other powers that this object gives him.

His life changes completely once he begins to use the millennium eye, a lot of knowledge from the past was present in his research, and according to him, bringing back his fiancée would be possible to get all the millennium items. His mission had changed, searching for the items was his priority, so learning about them and ancient Egypt he learned about the past history of the duel of monsters, a fight that took place in ancient times with real monsters from another world, with sorcerers and pharaohs fighting for power.

That's where our main character, Yugimoto, better known as Yugi, comes in.

The holder of the millennium puzzle

Yugi is a young student quite particular, he has a kind and at the same time naive attitude, which causes him many problems, he was instructed by his grandfather in the card game so he is an excellent duelist. Up to this point his life is normal, but after assembling the millennium puzzle, a relic that his grandfather had given him, his life changes completely, as it turns out that inside the puzzle dwells a spirit of someone else. It is not until the second season that the identity of this character is discovered, but he is the main figure of the whole series.

As the season progresses Yugi is creating bonds of friendship quite important, characters like Joey Wheller, Tristan, Tea, and Bakura appear, each of them has its role in the story, for example Joey becomes a duelist and best friend of Yugi, while Tea and Tristan are always encouraging him, for his part Bakura is part of those who have an ancient object, the millennium ring that is very similar to Yugi's, but is an evil spirit that dwells within it, and sometimes takes control of his body for his dark plans, which is to obtain all the items and rule.

The champion and great rival

Finally, we have two main characters but part of the antagonistic line in a sense, two brothers who have experienced firsthand family abandonment and adoption by a tyrant, things that affected their childhood, but shaped their character in the story. The older of them, world champion of duels and president of the Kaiba corporation, while the younger is very similar to Yugi in his way of being; their names are Seto Kaiba and Mokuba respectively, their participation is crucial throughout the season, especially that of Seto who rivals Yugi in the duel of monsters. The first time they faced each other Yugi defeated him and from then on he only thinks about recovering his prestige as champion and number 1 duelist.

It is interesting to see how Kaiba shows a pedantic and proud attitude, he is shown as a ruthless being who only cares about winning through his intelligence and ability, he shows no signs of apparent weakness, but is usually sensitized when his little brother is in danger. He is undoubtedly a very well elaborated character, his way of being is typical of a person who by providential circumstances lost any opportunity to enjoy a healthy childhood, who has had to fight from an early age to survive, that has turned him into a cold and distant being who has no friends.

As the series progresses his participation becomes more important because Pegasus is after his company to take advantage of the technological advances it has, so he and his brother are in big trouble against the creator of the game, so much so that they are trapped by him in the realm of shadows to later be saved by our hero and protagonist: Yugimoto, or rather the spirit of the millennium puzzle.

Final Thoughts

It seems to me an excellent series, this first season is a very interesting preamble for what is coming in the later ones, the truth is that the author shaped a very good plot with very well developed characters throughout the story. Although mysticism is present it is not the main message, perhaps for a child the battles are the most exciting, but once you understand the series there are many things to value, such as friendship for example, is a point that is emphasized very well, as each of them are forming strong bonds that are intensified by difficult circumstances, but in turn are overcome together and none individually. The other point that caught my attention is the character of Pegasus, it shows the obsession that a human being can have to lose something he really loves in life, so much so that it can change his character and so on.

The first season has left me with a very good taste in my mouth, but the story gets more exciting when secrets of the past begin to be revealed, things that I will talk about in the review of the following seasons, so that's all for this opportunity.

Yugioh: Más que un duelo de monstruos

Ser padre de dos pequeños me ha llevado a revivir series nostálgicas de mi infancia, ya que he optado por ver con ellos comiquitas de mi pasado, las cuales considero tienen una mejor trama y enseñanza que las actuales. Es sin duda un tiempo calidad que paso con ellos, y a su vez disfruto de estas buenas producciones. La ventaja de observar nuevamente estas series es que siendo un adulto se pueden captar cosas que no podías entender cuando niño, y estoy seguro que esa es la intención del autor, más allá de entretener, es transmitir un mensaje a todos sus televidentes, inclusive una creencia.

En el caso de Yugioh, es una serie ambientada en el antiguo Egipto, aunque los hechos suceden en el presente aproximadamente 5000 años después, y el enfoque principal es la lucha de cartas, específicamente el duelo de monstruos donde un competidor se enfrenta a otro con la finalidad de derrotarlo a traves de sus creaturas. Este duelo en realidad es su máximo atractivo, ya que aparte de los monstruos impresionantes que allí aparecen se pueden vislumbrar estrategias de combate bastante avanzadas entre los duelistas. Existen 3 tipos de cartas para la batalla, una es de monstruos, otra de magia y otra de trampa, cada competidor tiene de estas en su baraja que está conformada por más de 40 cartas, y de allí cada uno emplea su manera de combatir.

Hablando de la lucha en sí, cada competidor debe barajear su mazo antes de comenzar y colocarlo boca abajo en el campo, luego de eso tomar 5 cartas para iniciar el duelo. La lucha se hace por turnos y a medida que el duelo va avanzando cada competidor va sacando una carta de su mazo por turno; lo interesante de esto es que entra el azar en el combate, pues luego de barajear las cartas y comenzar, ninguno sabe cuál carta viene, y de allí conforme van sacando van armando su estrategia. La idea para vencer es acabar con los puntos de vida de su oponente, los cuales en la primera temporada de la serie constan de 2000, el objetivo es llevarlos a cero.

El creador detrás del juego

En escena entra un hombre llamado Maximilian Pegasus, quien es un pintor excepcional con un triste pasado, la persona que él amaba y con quien iba a casarse murió trágicamente, llevándolo a la desesperación, y a la búsqueda incansable de traer de vuelta a su amada. Esa búsqueda lo llevo a Egipto, donde un personaje misterioso llamado Shadis lo guía a una cámara oculta que guarda una serie de objetos mágicos llamados los artículos del milenio, resulta que cada uno de esos artículos estan destinados a ser usados por ciertas personas en esta era, y precisamente Pegasus es uno de ellos. Al obtener el ojo del milenio, Maximilian puede leer la mente de las personas, además de usar otros poderes que este objeto le otorga.

Su vida cambia por completo una vez comienza a usar el ojo del milenio, una gran cantidad de conocimientos del pasado se hacían presentes en su investigación, y según el mismo, traer de vuelta a su prometida sería posible al conseguir todos los artículos del milenio. Su misión había cambiado, buscar los artículos era su prioridad, por lo que aprendiendo de ellos y del antiguo Egipto conoció la pasada historia del duelo de monstruos, una lucha que tenía lugar en la antigüedad con monstruos reales de otro mundo, con hechiceros y faraones que luchaban por poder.

Su ambición creció mas y más cuando entendió que su magia le podía trasladar al reino de las sombras, un espacio donde se podía usar el poder del artículo en su plenitud pero que afectaba la mente de las personas, un reino de oscuridad que el mundo ignoraba. Una vez que creo el duelo de monstruos en la actualidad, Pegasus con su empresa lo expandió a nivel mundial, y comenzaron a participar muchas personas, y también aquellos que tenían una conexión con los artículos que Pegasus tanto buscaba. Allí es donde entra nuestro personaje principal, Yugimoto, mejor conocido como Yugi.

El poseedor del rompecabezas del milenio

Yugi es un joven estudiante bastante particular, tiene una actitud amable y a la vez ingenua, la cual le causa muchos problemas, fue instruido por su abuelo en el juego de las cartas por lo que es un excelente duelista. Hasta este punto su vida es normal, pero luego de armar el rompecabezas del milenio, una reliquia que le había dado su abuelo su vida cambio completamente, pues resulta que dentro del rompecabezas habita un espíritu de alguien más. No es sino hasta la segunda temporada que se descubre la identidad de este personaje, pero es la figura principal de toda la serie.

El espíritu que habita dentro del rompecabezas del milenio es un ser versado en el duelo de monstruos, por lo que es muy difícil de derrotar, y es el quien toma el lugar de Yugi al momento de tener un duelo. Parece astucia a primera vista, pero la realidad es que este personaje tiene una misión que cumplir aunque ni el mismo la recuerda, por ahora solo se dedica a luchar en los duelos mientras va encontrando su camino.

A medida que avanza la temporada Yugi va creando lazos de amistad bastante importantes, aparecen personajes como Joey Wheller, Tristan, Tea, y Bakura, cada uno de ellos tiene su rol en la historia, por ejemplo Joey se convierte en duelista y mejor amigo de Yugi, mientras que Tea y Tristan siempre estan dándole ánimos, por su parte Bakura forma parte de esos que tienen un objeto antiguo, la sortija del milenio que es muy parecida a la de Yugi, pero es un espíritu maligno que habita dentro de ella, y en ocasiones toma control de su cuerpo para sus planes oscuros, el cual es obtener todos los artículos y gobernar.

El campeón y gran rival

Por último, tenemos a dos personajes principales pero que forman parte de la línea antagónica en cierto sentido, dos hermanos que han vivido en carne propia el abandono familiar y la adopción por parte de un tirano, cosas que afectaron su niñez, pero que moldearon su carácter en la historia. El mayor de ellos, campeón mundial de duelos y presidente de la corporación Kaiba, mientras que el menor es muy parecido a Yugi en su forma de ser; sus nombres son Seto Kaiba y Mokuba respectivamente, su participación es crucial en toda la temporada, sobre todo la de Seto que rivaliza con Yugi en el duelo de monstruos. La primera vez que se enfrentaron Yugi lo venció y desde allí solo piensa en recuperar su prestigio como campeón y duelista número 1.

Es interesante ver como Kaiba muestra una actitud pedante y orgullosa, se muestra como un ser despiadado al que solo le importa ganar a traves de su inteligencia y capacidad, no muestra signos de aparente debilidad, pero suele sensibilizarse cuando su pequeño hermano está en peligro. Es sin duda un personaje muy bien elaborado, su forma de ser es típica de una persona que por circunstancias providenciales perdió toda oportunidad de disfrutar una niñez sana, a quien le ha tocado luchar desde temprana edad para sobrevivir, eso lo ha convertido en un ser frio y distante que no tiene ningún amigo.

A medida que avanza la serie su participación se vuelve más importante debido a que Pegasus está tras su compañía para aprovechar los avances tecnológicos que esta posee, por lo que él y su hermano se ven en grandes problemas contra el creador del juego, tanto asi que son atrapados por el en el reino de las sombras para posteriormente ser salvados por nuestro héroe y protagonista: Yugimoto, o mejor dicho el espíritu del rompecabezas del milenio.

Pensamientos finales

Me parece una serie excelente, esta primera temporada es un preámbulo muy interesante para lo que se viene en las posteriores, lo cierto es que el autor plasmo una trama muy buena con personajes muy bien desarrollados a lo largo de la historia. Si bien el misticismo está presente no es el mensaje principal, quizás para un niño las batallas sean lo más emocionante, pero una vez se entiende la serie hay muchas cosas que valorar, como la amistad por ejemplo, es un punto que se enfatiza muy bien, como cada uno de ellos van formando lazos fuertes que se intensifican por medio de circunstancias difíciles, pero a su vez son superadas en conjunto y ninguna de forma individual. El otro punto que llamo bastante mi atención es el personaje de Pegasus, muestra la obsesión que puede tener el ser humano por perder algo que realmente ama en la vida, tanto asi que puede hacerlo cambiar en su carácter y demás.

La primera temporada me ha dejado con muy buen sabor de boca, pero la historia se pone más emocionante cuando se comienzan a revelar secretos del pasado, cosas de las cuales hablare en los review de las siguientes temporadas, asi que esto ha sido todo por esta oportunidad.
