Taichung Fifth Public Retail Market used to be an important place for people to purchase daily necessities, but as the economy developed and consumer habits changed, it gradually lost its original function and declined. However, for many elderly people in Taichung, it remains the most iconic market. Despite its old and dilapidated buildings, standing side by side with a dull and inconsistent appearance, the people living in the Fifth Market are mostly resistant to changing their way of life. It seems like they insist on maintaining this kind of atmosphere, which has remained unchanged since World War II.

The Fifth Market is a fierce battleground for traditional local snacks. If a shop doesn't offer delicious food, it won't survive for long here. Markets, regardless of the country, are closely linked to the lives of local residents. Therefore, there are often hidden local delicacies around the market. Besides being frequented by food TV programs, food bloggers or vloggers also often come here to find material for their writing or videos.

I originally wanted to come to the Fifth Market earlier, but it was too hot during the day, and I was too lazy, so I ended up going out very late. The bustling morning market had already ended, but fortunately, there were still some shops open along the street. You can find various classic Taiwanese snacks here, such as oyster porridge, oyster vermicelli, rice balls, meatballs, and squid snacks. I decided to grab a bite to eat randomly. In the evening, I have plans with friends, so we might eat something there as well.

On my way back home, I passed by Chun Shui Tang, which was founded in 1983 as Yanghsien Tea Shop. It is one of two Taiwanese restaurant chains that claim to have invented bubble milk tea. I have tried their bubble milk tea several times, and it's just okay, nothing special. Plus, it's quite expensive. I only recommend it to friends from out of town when we meet up. If I'm meeting my local friends, we wouldn't even consider it because there are thousands of other bubble milk tea shops in Taiwan that are cheap and taste better. Don't try to trick me out of my money!
