HIVE OPEN MIC WEEK 100 SINGING HIGHLIFE WITH @STARSTRINGS01, @MAYORKEYS AND @HESKAY.png

Hello friends/ Hola amigos,

It's so nice to be back here again. I missed listening to your awesome voices and instruments.

IMG_4459.jpeg

For this week's theme "SING WITH ME" which was given by my good friend @jesuslnrs our spotlight artiste. I decided to team up with my friends @starstrings01, @mayorkeys and @heskay. @starstrings01 is playing the lead guitar, @mayorkeys is playing the keyboard, @heskay is coordinating from the background and I am also singing and drumming using a bottle as we do it traditionally.
This week we bring to you HI-LIFE music proudly made in Nigeria.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC IS HIGH-LIFE?

hive line.png

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, High-life is a dance music of west African origin that combines syncopated African rhythms with elements of jazz text source

highlife, type of West African popular music and dance that originated in Ghana in the late 19th century, later spread to western Nigeria, and flourished in both countries in the 1950s. The earliest form of highlife was performed primarily by brass bands along the Ghanaian coast. By the early 20th century these bands had incorporated a broader array of instruments (primarily of European origin), a vocal component, and stylistic elements both of local music traditions and of jazz. Highlife thus emerged as a unique synthesis of African, African American, and European musical aesthetics.
In the 1930s the popularity of highlife stretched inland and eastward along the coast, garnering an especially large following in Nigeria. There highlife experienced an important transformation: asymmetrical drum rhythms derived from traditional drumming practices of the Yoruba people were combined with syncopated (displaced-accent) guitar melodies to accompany songs sung in either Yoruba or English. By the mid-1960s, however, highlife had lost much of its audience to guitar-centred popular styles. One of these styles, a predominantly Yoruba-based outgrowth of highlife called juju, gained widespread international recognition in the 1980s and remained popular in Nigerian “hotels,” or nightclubs, into the 21st century.

I grew up listening to great high-life sounds from Chief Osita Osadebe, Oliver de coque, celestine Ukwu, Sunny bobo and many others.

Now, we have modern versions and blend of Highlife music.

For today's high-life, we did a combination of 2 songs. First is Bottom belle by Omawunmi ft. Flavour and the second is the popular DUDUKE by Simi.

What a beautiful energy you have achieved with the union of the four of you, I congratulate you and send you my blessing. I love that you used a bottle to harmonize this piece, great sound detail that gives originality to the video.

I feel a great thrill to see them together. In fact I think that this band should present more works in a row, they all have a gift that distinguishes them. I wish I had people with their skills so close to me and have a small band, that's a dream. I send a greeting that extends to @starstrings01, my great friend @mayorkeys and the invisible @heskay, who at least we saw in the photos hahaha...
