Howdy, Hivers. Today I want to introduce myself to the @cycling community; I am starting a beautiful project. For many years I have loved mountain biking, I have had several bikes, but this time I'm starting a nice project, I'm building a mountain bike from scratch and today I want to show the beginning of this project. The first thing I did is to buy a size M frame to build a 29 rim bike. This kind of bikes are quite big and comfortable for MTB. I already have the frame, and is on the way, two tires which I will show you soon and I will tell you how I managed to make this Azaña.

I have had in my life two bikes, one in my adolescence, that was rim 24; then when I lived in the city of Maturin - Venezuela, I bought a MTB rim 26, this was second hand but it was in excellent condition, I sold it and went to Cumana - Venezuela, and it is here where the project of building a bike from scratch was born, starting with what I show you today (The frame) until the final moment, when I acquire the fork, which I am still seeing the benefits of choosing one with hydraulic, air or spring damping, this also taking into account my budget.

Hello and welcome to the Cycling Community!
Building a bicyle from scratch, that is very cool!
That looks quite a difficult task to do. I will certainly follow your project. Please keep sharing updates.

I know another cyclist that has sort of a project of building his own bicycle.
How is that project going by the way; @mrprofessor?

So awesome! Don't forget to keep us updated @cesaramos.

Mine is kinda halted as I need more money for larger parts (fork and tires mainly, and also the 11 speed chain that's is quite expensive). I already have the frame, wheels, stem, handlebar, seatpost clamp, cranks, chanring, groupset, etc. I had to use the money for the forks in a new handlebar (broke mine, remember? sad

Oooh. Too bad, well in my case I only have the frame 😊, the rubbers I already ordered them. They should get to me next week. I'm really excited about this little project.

And of course little by little I will be showing the progress of my MTB, which I feel it will be huge hahaha. I hope you can get the fork soon, for a good ride in the mountains. 🤘😎

Yeah, materials are very expensive nowadays 😐
I remember your handle bar incident indeed.
It does make you appreciate things even more when you have save for it. For what that is worth 😀

I'm wondering what you pay for an 11-speed chain by the way. There is a big difference in economies between Brasil and The Netherlands, but I'm just wondering how much the difference is. I just bought a shimano 105 11 speed chain online myself for 26 euro's 😲.

Sram PC 1110 11 speed is about 38 USD here, that's 14-15% of our minimum wage

That is a lot!
I didn't expect that to be that high.

I can order one online here for 16 euro (bout 17 dollar) shipping included.

Minimum wage here is € 13,27 an hour for people older than 21.

Oh... 😕

One of the cheapest online stores in Europe is BikeDiscount.de, the price minus tax would be 8.39eur! Unfortunately, delivery to Brazil is not possible.

There is a little trick I often use when shipping an item to my country is not possible. There is a free mailboxde.com service that allows you to have a free postal address on the territory of Germany, ie the European Union. I order the goods to that address, and then send it to myself through their website. This works perfectly, I tried it many times.

The price of the chain for the European Union including tax is 9.99 EUR plus 4.49 for delivery. The price of redirecting a package via the Mailbox DE service is 18.80 eur, so the price is still lower in total than at your place.

The good thing about the mailbox service is that you can combine several packages into one and thus save on shipping costs. The last time I used the service, this repacking cost 5-6 euros per shared package, so check if it's worth it.

I also have to take into account that the local post office will charge customs clearance costs of 20% for all packages worth more than 50 euros. Check your local laws.

That's very useful info. We gotta take into account a possible 17% state tax + 60% import tax upon arrival, which sucks big time. The cheapest option is to try out Aliexpress -- Ali has a partnership with our government where we only pay 17% state tax and 0% import for goods below 50 usd -- anything outside this program is subject to import tax (60%) on any value. Customs receive tons of packages each day, so, sometimes stuff enters without paying; if you are unlucky and they catch you there's also 100% fine on top of all that. Brazil is incredibly hostile in that regard.

😲 26 Euros... Although I should not be so surprised, here in Venezuela this same chain is about 50 USD, this is the one I should buy, it is 42 USD, plus shipping would be about 46USD.

Yes, this is a project a little uphill because of the costs, but it will be unstoppable, with great effort on my part I will achieve it =)

Thank you very much community. This is an experience that has me very excited, I can see that there are two of us who are currently on this wonderful path of building a new bike. Really, it is a project that has me very excited.

Poco a poco iré mostrando mi avance 😊😊😊😊... @mrprofessor un gusto saludarte.

Great job! In my experience, nothing compares to the feeling of building your own bike from scratch. If you run into some dilemmas, there are some very experienced mechanics and cyclists in the community who can help you with their experiences and advice. Good luck and I'm sure you'll enjoy every mile when your new bike is finished.

OH, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. one of the things that has me wondering the most is the type of fork I should use. which one would you recommend for my MTB, a spring or hydraulic suspension, taking into account that most of the time it will be on flat terrain with few bumps?

No problem, I'm glad if I can help. If it fits your budget, I recommend the air fork. It offers much more adjustability, the response to the terrain is way better, and I think the weight is in its favor. The only advantage of coil fork is ease of maintenance and lower price. If you mainly ride on flat terrain, then you can choose a fork with a smaller travel - 100mm or even 80mm and thus significantly save on the price. However, when choosing, be sure to check the frame manufacturer's website, because a fork with a shorter travel than the one specified by the manufacturer can significantly change the geometry and handling of the bike.

Oh! Excellent recommendation. I will do the right thing, to get the best out of my MTB. 🤘😎
