Greetings to my dear family of Arquitectura&diseño, today the emotion overwhelms me for two things, first as a Venezuelan because I want to introduce you to the imposing Teresa Carreño Theater located in Caracas-Venezuela, being one of the largest in South America. Second because this space was one of the places where I worked for almost 15 years. Now that I made this photographic tour I could remember beautiful moments I spent there among these beautiful gardens, between music and theater.
Un saludo a mi estimada familia de Arquitectura&diseño, hoy la emoción me embarga por dos cosas, primero como venezolana porque quiero presentarles al imponente Teatro Teresa Carreño ubicado en Caracas-Venezuela, siendo uno de los más grandes de Sur América. Segundo porque este espacio fue uno de los lugares donde trabajé por casi de 15 años. Ahora que hice este recorrido fotográfico pude recordar hermosos momentos que pasé allí entre estos hermosos jardines, entre música y teatro.
The teresa Carreño cultural complex is bigger than many think and it was organized in a perfect way to give space to everything. If one day you come to Caracas you can walk around this place sure that you will not waste time and there will be no room for boredom.
El complejo cultural teresa Carreño es más grande de lo que muchos piensan y es que fue organizado de forma perfecta para dar el espacio a cada cosa. Si algún día vienes a caracas podrás caminar por este lugar seguro de que no perderás el tiempo y no habrá cabida para el aburrimiento.
The Teresa Carreño Theater is a cultural complex that was built in the 70's under the government of President Rafael Caldera thanks to the initial idea of violinist Pedro Antonio Ríos Reyna who was president of the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra. In order to build a larger place dedicated especially to culture, the Simón Bolívar Center began a process in which the best architects in the country competed and the architects Tomás Lugo Marcano, Jesús Sandoval and Dietrich Kunckel were selected.
El Teatro Teresa Carreño es un complejo cultural que fue construido en los años 70 bajo el gobierno del Presidente Rafael Caldera gracias a la idea inicial del violinista Pedro Antonio Ríos Reyna quien era presidente de la Orquesta Sinfónica Venezuela. En aras de construir un lugar más amplio dedicado especialmente a la cultura, el Centro Simón Bolívar inicia un proceso donde concursan los mejores arquitectos del país siendo seleccionados los arquitectos Tomás Lugo Marcano, Jesús Sandoval y Dietrich Kunckel.
From what I could investigate this theater belongs to the current of rationalism, international style or modern movement that emerged in Europe after the first world war; I can also add that the architects based their design in the space between the museums of fine arts, science museum, Los Caobos park, Caracas Hilton Hotel, Central Park and next to the botanical garden of the Central University of Venezuela.
Por lo que pude investigar este teatro pertenece a la corriente del racionalismo, estilo internacional o movimiento moderno que surge en Europa después de la primera guerra mundial; también puedo agregar que los arquitectos basaron su diseño en el espacio que había entre los museos de bellas artes, museo de ciencias, parque los caobos, Hotel Caracas Hilton, Parque central y a un costado del jardín botánico de la Universidad central de Venezuela.
They say that one day while walking through Los Caobos Park, they noticed that the paths, planters and fountains had been built geometrically, so they decided to take these forms that were also very fashionable in other countries and apply them to the design of the theater. Another important point is that they always wanted to maintain the idea of creating a place of transition between the city and nature, that is why the theater is open in almost all its spaces, terraces and corridors to maintain the view towards the green of the park.
Cuentan que un día mientras caminaban por el parque Los Caobos, notaron que los caminos, jardineras y fuentes, habían sido construidos de forma geométrica, por lo que deciden tomar estas formas que también estaban muy de moda en otros países y aplicarlas al diseño del teatro. Otro punto importante es que Siempre se quiso mantener la idea de crear un sitio de transición entre la ciudad y la naturaleza, es por eso que el teatro está abierto en casi todos sus espacios, terrazas y pasillos para mantener la visión hacia lo verde del parque.
In 1973, construction began with the firm intention of integrating concrete with nature and the plastic arts. It is composed of two main halls, the Ríos Reyna hall, in homage to the main proponent of this idea, and the José Félix Ribas hall, Venezuelan military man and hero of the Venezuelan Independence, this one is a little smaller than the previous one. The theater was officially completed in 1983, during the government of Luis Herrera Campins, this is something that the people would definitely appreciate forever since the old theaters had already become too small for the large population that had come to the capital of the country in recent years.
En el año de 1973 se inician las obras de construcción con el firme pensamiento de integrar el concreto a la naturaleza y a las artes plásticas. Está compuesto por dos salas principales la sala Ríos Reyna, en homenaje a quien fuera el principal propulsor de esta idea y la sala José Félix Ribas quien fuera militar venezolano y prócer de la Independencia de Venezuela, esta es un poco más pequeña que la anterior. El teatro oficialmente se culminó en 1983, durante el gobierno de Luis Herrera Campins, esto es algo que definitivamente el pueblo agradecería por siempre ya que los antiguos teatros ya se habían quedado pequeño para la gran población que había llegado a la capital del país en los últimos años.
Something that I really like about this construction is that it is made of concrete material; many criticize it for being rustic and having an ugly shape because it uses many geometric shapes, but for me it is a magnificent work.
Algo que me gusta muchísimo de esta construcción es que está fabricado con material de hormigón; muchos lo critican de ser rustico y tener una forma fea por utilizar muchas formas geométricas, pero para mí es una obra magnifica.
Once I talked to someone about this subject and I told him not only about this work but also about others such as the National Library or the "Domingo Lucianni" hospital that also have a beautiful and clean design and he told me that for a city to be preserved and not become a chaos all engineers and architects should follow the same pattern; that is to say that there should not be red buildings, green buildings, some high and some low and then an architectural disorder is formed.
Una vez hablé con alguien de ese tema y le comenté no solo de esta obra sino también de otras que como la Biblioteca nacional o el hospital “Domingo Lucianni” que conservan también un hermoso y limpio diseño y él me dijo que para que una ciudad se conservara y no se volviera un caos todos los ingenieros y arquitectos deberían de seguir un mismo patrón; es decir que no hayan edificios rojos, otros verdes, unos altos y bajos y se forme entonces un desorden arquitectónico.
So we can say that the theater is of a raw concrete style, also uses materials such as steel and glass and is characterized by a clean, solid and undecorated exterior.
Entonces podemos decir que el teatro es de un estilo de hormigón bruto, utiliza también materiales como el acero y el cristal y se caracteriza por tener un exterior limpio, sólido y sin decoración.
In order to get the pictures I had to attend on three different occasions because the first time the authorities did not let me pass because of the pandemic, so that day I only took some pictures in the main gardens. The second time I was lucky enough to go to the Rios Reyna hall and see one of my favorite artists in concert, the third time was last week when by luck of fate I saw that they were letting me into the theater for a play and I snuck in to bring you these images today.
Para poder conseguir las imágenes tuve que asistir en tres oportunidades distintas ya que la primera vez las autoridades no me dejaron pasar por culpa de la pandemia, así que ese día solo tomé algunas fotos en los jardines principales. La segunda vez tuve la dicha de asistir a la sala Ríos Reyna y ver en concierto a una de mis artistas favoritas, la tercera fue la semana pasada cuando por suerte del destino vi que estaban dejando entrar al teatro para una obra y me colé para traerles hoy estas imágenes.
While doing the tour I was able to teach my son Israel many important things about this theater, how the artists that were performing simply stayed at the old Caracas Hilton Hotel and were close to the theater for their rehearsals and then their presentations. Also the tourists or attendees to the events transited from the hotel to the theater through the walkway that connected both spaces, always protected by the security of the metropolitan police. Anyway, I could stay here telling stories all night, but I must conclude, I say see you later, take care of yourselves and please take care of our heritage anywhere in the world.
Mientras hacia el recorrido le pude enseñar a mi hijo Israel muchas cosas importantes de este teatro, de cómo los artistas que e presentaban simplemente se hospedaban en el antiguo Hotel Caracas Hilton y estaban cerca del teatro para realizar sus ensayos y luego sus presentaciones. También los turistas o asistentes a los eventos transitaban del hotel al teatro por la pasarela que conectaba ambos espacios, siempre resguardados con la seguridad de la policía metropolitana. En fin, aquí podría quedarme contando historias toda la noche, pero debo concluir, les digo hasta luego, cuídense mucho y por favor cuidemos nuestro patrimonio en cualquier lugar del mundo.

What a beautiful interior design, I love the presence of stainless steel and the light trap for natural plants
It is incredible how many meters of sand, stones and cement were used in the construction of this beautiful building.
