El Hotel Ávila, tiene mucha historia que contar, no solo por ser un hotel histórico, también por estar ubicado en la primera urbanización meramente residencial que tuvo Caracas, San Bernardino. A este hotel llegaron muchos extranjeros atraídos por el boom petrolero, encontrando un entorno tropical difícil de no amar. Embutido en la montaña, a pocos metros de la entrada al cerro Ávila, o su nombre indígena Waraira Repano.

Todos los caraqueños sabemos que ir a San Bernardino es entrar en un espiral de avenidas y calles que rompe con la estructura cuadriculada de la ciudad, las “cuadras” se vuelven triángulos en esta zona, parece más vertientes de algún río que calles, San Bernardino se adaptó a la topología de la montaña que le da cobijo, en este enclave nace el hotel Ávila.

El hotel fue un encargo del mismo Rockefeller que, gracias a la apertura petrolera, hacía necesario un lugar de hospedaje de lujo para recibir a los inversionistas, y su arquitecto personal, Wallace Harrison, el encargado de llevar la obra adelante, Harrison diseña un edificio de estilo moderno pero utilizando también rasgos típicos del estilo colonial español (tan propio de la ciudad) y adaptándose al clima tropical de la ciudad de Caracas, utilizando elementos y materiales autóctonos como las tejas y las romanillas, que le dan ese carácter señorial a todo el conjunto. El hotel de 143 habitaciones, contó con todos los lujos y comodidades necesarias para la época, como restaurante, piano bar, áreas deportivas con canchas de tenis, área de piscina con amplios jardines entre otras cosas.

Inaugurado el 11 de agosto de 1942, este hotel es parte de la historia política y económica local y nacional de Venezuela, alojó al candidato presidencial Diógenes Escalante, que regresaba al país con la oferta de ser el próximo presidente de Venezuela, y aunque tenía mucho a su favor, según los criterios de esa época, no llegó a presentarse en la campaña, por una suerte de locura que le invadió el entendimiento una mañana mientras se alojaba en el hotel, fue declarado loco y la incertidumbre de un país echo de trozos, siguió su curso.

Para mi hija y para mí, es una tradición venir a este hotel, no para alojarnos, sino para disfrutar de sus instalaciones y comer algo rico, casi siempre las hamburguesas, que tienen un estilo gourmet y los nombres de los picos más altos del Cerro Ávila, son deliciosas. Ambas comimos las hamburguesas Bolívar con chispas crocantes de tocineta y salsa de hongos, nuestra favorita.

En estos días que el calor en Caracas está haciendo estragos, un buen chapuzón es bien recibido, aunque no siempre usamos la piscina, pues al estar en plena montaña, el clima es, casi siempre, frío y el agua helada. No hicimos muchas fotos en la piscina, pues estaba llena de bañistas y preferimos respetar su privacidad.

Luego fuimos por el postre, en otro lugar histórico de San Bernardino, la Pastelería La Suiza, donde fuimos recibidas por un gato gris, y comimos los divinos profiteroles.

The hotel was commissioned by Rockefeller himself who, thanks to the opening of the oil industry, required a luxury lodging place to receive investors, and his personal architect, Wallace Harrison, was in charge of carrying out the work. Harrison designed a modern style building but also using typical features of the Spanish colonial style (so typical of the city) and adapting to the tropical climate of the city of Caracas, using native elements and materials such as tiles and romanillas, which give that stately character to the whole complex. The 143-room hotel had all the luxuries and amenities necessary for the time, such as restaurant, piano bar, sports areas with tennis courts, swimming pool area with large gardens, among other things.

Inaugurated on August 11, 1942, this hotel is part of the local and national political and economic history of Venezuela, it housed the presidential candidate Diogenes Escalante, who was returning to the country with the offer to be the next president of Venezuela, and although he had much in his favor, according to the criteria of that time, he did not get to run in the campaign, by a kind of madness that invaded his understanding one morning while staying at the hotel, he was declared crazy and the uncertainty of a country made of pieces, followed its course.

For my daughter and me, it is a tradition to come to this hotel, not to stay, but to enjoy its facilities and eat something delicious, almost always the hamburgers, which have a gourmet style and the names of the highest peaks of Cerro Avila, are delicious. We both had the Bolivar burgers with crispy bacon chips and mushroom sauce, our favorite.

In these days that the heat in Caracas is raging, a good dip is welcome, although we do not always use the pool, because being in the mountains, the weather is almost always cold and the water is freezing. We did not take many pictures in the pool, as it was full of bathers and we preferred to respect their privacy.

Then we went for dessert, in another historic place in San Bernardino, the Pastelería La Suiza, where we were greeted by a gray cat, and ate the divine profiteroles.
