Money well spent for a 10 year old

I had always imagined myself to grow up to be the most responsible adult in the world, I would be making decisions that pleased the whole children around me like nobodies business unlike some adults I knew, I would always have something to say.
So it was quite shocking for me to realise that at ten years old which practically meant I was a grown-up now, I couldn't be able to spend my first saved up money.

I had to eat half of my lunch money everyday for a whole month just to get this money up to that amount and that was quiet a hard feat for me considering I loved eating and spending money.

I stared at the money in my hand and then back at supermarket. I was utterly clueless and I didn't know what to do.

"Hmmmmm, what if I buy dollbaby" I said with total glee on my face

Only the thought of having a new Barbie doll to disfigure in the next two weeks with my friends had me hyped, but then I remembered I had an older sister who carried her crown of being first born with total seriousness that annoyed everyone at home.she would give me the beating of my life If i spent that much money on just an ordinary Barbie doll that i would soon spoil. My excitement was turned to confusion once again.

I stood in front of the supermarket for minutes with my school uniform still on, confused. Some of the passerbys were giving me weird glances that literally said "wetin dey do this one" which is Nigerian slang for " what is wrong with her". They might have thought I had evil intentions but I wasn't sure that was the case. it didn't even matter to me,what mattered was that I was about to spend money that wasn't just simply handed to me, I had to work hard (starve lol) to get it.

"What can I buy that sister will not
shout at" I said to myself

I kept thinking and thinking but came up with no ideas. Beside the supermarket was a small bookshop that I hadn't noticed until that moment. One of the cover of the story was looking very pretty and that was the first thing that drew me to the bookstore. I know they say don't judge a book by its cover but I did the opposite and more. I judged it by the size, colour, name and I still do today, guess old habits die hard hahaha.
I bought ten different story books that day and when I finally read them I couldn't stop. I stayed up till past midnight reading them and when I got to school the next day I couldn't stop talking about them. All my classmates wanted to read it too and as the mischievous child I was I rented it out for 20 naira per book. That was a lot of money for me back then, I could buy icecream and buns or rice with just 20 naira.I made a lot of money with those books and I enjoyed every bit of it.

At one point children books was not enough for me because I was craving something more. I was still ten years old when I read my first novel " tiny sunbird far away" and the second one " zarah the windseeker". Those two books opened my eyes to a whole new different world, the first one made me cry when one of the character's died( I was so surprised books could make you cry).
Today I've probably read half the books in the world all because I saw a book that looked pretty.

A purchased book is not an expense, it is an investment, you discovered it with your own experience, a book can return money or knowledge. A nice experience that you share with us.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Good day.

What a beautiful story, I read to a point and before completing the sentence, I thought I was the big sister 😂😂, I hated dolls so much
Zara the windseeker is a must read.

You made the right decision in getting a book instead of a doll
