It's incredible that it was mistaken for an Islamic shrine for so long! Are there any studies on how the local population reinterpreted Greek symbols for religious purposes?

The local people were praying there, believing that the person buried there was a church leader. According to ancient sources and inscriptions, Diagoras is known to have been a warrior and an athlete. Subsequent excavations and archaeological investigations revealed that the structure was actually an ancient Greek tomb.
