I have several events that I have lived through in my life, which have been news all over the world, but on this occasion I will tell you about one in particular that marked the lives of my fellow countrymen in different ways, but it was a natural disaster that mourned the entire country and was news for many days internationally, because the level of destruction and devastation was so great that it remained for the annals of history.

I remember that day when that catastrophic event happened, it was a Wednesday morning, it had rained all night of those rains that do not stop and that are followed through the hours, I was making breakfast when I was hearing the first news on television, that days before, beginning the month of December already announced a critical situation because of the heavy rains that had been occurring.

In those days a political process was being organized and taking place in the country, the Referendum for the approval of a new Constitution, where the population had to exercise their right to vote. I thought at a given moment that they were going to suspend it because of the emergencies that were emerging all over the country, rivers overflowed, creeks blocked, landslides in different states. Things were not looking good, but they were.

The day before the disaster, the then president, Hugo Rafael Chávez, as a curious thing, said in an interview a phrase of Simón Bolívar, such as "If nature opposes, we will fight against it and we will make it obey us" that phrase remained for history, that was on December 14 and on December 15, 1999, our country as we knew Venezuela, suffered one of the worst natural disasters in its history in the state of Vargas.

Due to a strong windstorm, countless people died as a result of it. Many buildings disappeared, houses, churches, the beaches were filled with rocks, that was something very difficult to see, there were many stories of survivors that today stop the hairs by the creepy that were. That day we did not leave the house, we just prayed and watched the news with a heavy heart on TV and cried. I live nearby in the city and this state Vargas is practically leaving the city towards the coastal areas.

This terrible experience left many lessons, Venezuelans united, giving the best we could in my case, I gathered clothes from my family and took them to a collection center, to collaborate in something besides prayers. After this happened it took about 4 years in my case for me to dare to visit my beautiful coastline in Vargas and you could still see how in the mountains there were marks of water so deep that could be seen as scratches made by a great giant. This event filled our hearts with sadness and we cannot erase from our minds those lamentable images of human losses and the destruction that remained....

The lives of many innocent people were lost, children, women, entire families, even pets; but there were also stories of love, courage and heroism, the best of us came to the surface in those days, no Venezuelan is unaware of this unfortunate event, because it marked a before and after in our lives.

Tengo varios acontecimientos que he vivido en mi vida, que han sido noticia en el mundo entero, pero en esta ocasión les hablaré de uno en especial que marcó la vida de mis coterráneos de diferentes maneras, pero que fue un desastre natural que enlutó al país entero y fue noticia por muchos días a nivel internacional, porque el nivel de destrucción y devastación fue tan grande que quedó para los anales de la historia.

Recuerdo que ese día en que sucedió ese evento catastrófico, fue un miércoles por la mañana, había llovido toda la noche de esas lluvias que no cesan y que son seguidas a través de las horas, estaba haciendo el desayuno cuando estaba oyendo las primeras noticias por televisión, que días anteriores, comenzando el mes de diciembre ya anunciaban una situación critica a causa de las intensas lluvias que venían dándose.

Por esos días se estaba organizando y dando un proceso político en el país, el Referéndum para la aprobación de una nueva Constitución, donde la población tenía que ejercer el derecho al voto. Pensé en un momento dado que lo iban a suspender a causa de las emergencias que se estaban emergiendo por todo el país, ríos desbordados, quebradas obstruidas, deslizamientos de tierra por diferentes estados. Las cosas no pintaban bien, pero no fue así.

El día anterior al desastre, el que era presidente para ese entonces, Hugo Rafael Chávez, como cosa curiosa, dijo en una entrevista una frase de Simón Bolívar, tal cual "Si la naturaleza se opone, lucharemos contra ella y haremos que nos obedezca" esa frase quedó para la historia, eso fue un 14 de diciembre y el 15 de diciembre de 1999, nuestro país como lo conocíamos Venezuela, sufrió uno de los peores desastres naturales en su historia en el estado Vargas.

Donde por causa de una fuerte vaguada murieron incontables personas a causa de esta. Desaparecieron muchas edificaciones, casas, iglesias, las playas se llenaron de rocas, eso fue algo muy difícil de ver, hubo muchas historias de sobrevivientes que hoy en día paran los vellos por los espeluznantes que fueron. Ese día no salimos de casa, solo nos limitamos a orar y ver las noticias con el corazón encogido por TV y llorar. Yo vivo cerca en la ciudad y este estado Vargas está prácticamente saliendo de la misma hacia las zonas de su litoral.

Esta terrible experiencia dejó muchas enseñanzas, los venezolanos nos unimos, dando lo mejor que pudimos en mi caso, reuní ropa de mi familia y la llevé a un centro de acopio, para colaborar en algo aparte de las oraciones. Después que pasó esto pasaron años como 4 en mi caso para que me atreviera a visitar mi hermoso litoral en Vargas y aún se podía ver como en las montañas había marcas de aguas tan profundas que se podían apreciar como rasguños hechos por un gran gigante. Este hecho lleno de mucha tristeza nuestro corazón y no se pueden borrar de nuestra mente esas lamentables imágenes de perdidas humanas y la destrucción que quedo...

Se perdieron la vida de mucha gente inocente, niños, mujeres, familias enteras, incluso mascotas; pero también surgieron historias de amor, valentía y heroísmo, lo mejor de nosotros salió a flote en aquellos días, ningún venezolano está en desconocimiento de este lamentable hecho, pues marco un antes y un después de nuestras vidas.
