When I hear the Spanish writer Jordi Sierra i Fabra say that there were no books in his house when he was a child, I can't help but be moved and identify with him.

sierra-fabra.jpg

I grew up without the pleasant company of books. I only remember that there was a New Testament in my house. A small blue paperback book that some religious organization had given to my mother as a gift, for which I will always be grateful. It was perhaps my first encounter with the Sermon on the Mount and its author Jesus Christ. However, it was much later, when I was already a person of legal age, that I felt the call, the imperious need to read books whose titles gave off a special attraction and that I felt, I didn't know why, I had to read at some point.

NTGedeones.jpg

I tried to draw in a poem, which I titled "La Lectura", the sensations that overwhelmed me when I literally, and I write this with great humility, began to decipher, feel and above all enjoy what I was reading. A vast new panorama of expectations was opening up before me. A whole accumulation of knowledge, ideas, stories and fascinating experiences were waiting to be discovered after my sudden encounter with Literature and Poetry. The treasure, which I had just found, had always been there, I had had it in front of me, however, I did not know it, I could not decipher those codes in spite of their simplicity. Everything changed, as in a sort of blessing, when I had the opportunity to read the work

Wind in the Willows
by British writer Kenneth Grahame. A book of children's literature. I was not a child. But that children's story captivated me, fascinated me immediately and I grew fond of every page I read. To such an extent that, years after that pleasant revelation, I was seriously considering baptizing my firstborn son with the name Kenneth, as a small act of homage and gratitude to its author.

It had opened, for me, a small but beautiful door to a totally foreign and unknown world until that moment. A world of hallucinating, fantastic stories. Some written with overwhelming simplicity, others with a particular touch of depth. A world that invited me with an insistent urgency to get to know it. A world that gripped me pleasantly, and perhaps belatedly, but with a spiritual, motivating and especially entertaining force that I had never experienced anywhere else. I couldn't believe I had been missing out on all that. There was so much to read, I was really behind. I wondered How is it that at my age I still hadn't been able to read Don Quixote de la Mancha by the ingenious Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra I had to start without further delay!

In the midst of that whirlwind of new thoughts and sensations. Suddenly, I remembered that yes, I had had in my hands, not one, but several stories. That I had read them and perhaps I had analyzed them a little, at the time, as part of a school assignment. However, I did not remember having had the same sensations, I had not understood them, I had not enjoyed them, something had prevented it or at least I thought so. One of those stories was the novel by the Venezuelan writer Rómulo Gallegos, Doña Bárbara. So I quickly took on the task of rereading that story and, to my surprise, I had immediately "fallen in love with the character Maricela", of the Bongo going up the river Arauca, "of Doña Bárbara herself" and above all, ***I had "fallen in love" with the Venezuelan plains.

Another of the stories, which my memory recovered, like a flash of light to my brain, among many others, was the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez. Then, I could remember the forgotten town of Macondo and the yellow butterflies that always fluttered around the singular character of Mauricio Babilonia. I had also forgotten the titanic battle that old fisherman had with an enormous fish in Ernest Hemingway's marvelous work The Old Man and the Sea. All those readings had been school assignments. And all that record of information had lain dormant, waiting for the right moment to find its way and show itself unexpectedly inside me. I found everything that was happening to me strange and exciting.

It could not be otherwise, after that sublime call of the books, everything changed and took an accelerated pace. I wanted to read everything. And I am almost sure, that without even having heard of it, I activated my Ascending Reticular Activating System. As the renowned Dr. Mariam Rojas teaches in her lectures, "when we want something the brain doesn't show it"! Many books began to appear in my path and I received them with much affection. Some time later I found out that many of them are classics of literature. He flew to my Juan Salvador Gaviota and I dared to cross The Bridge to Infinity, books by the writer Richard Bach, who introduced me to his colleague, twice, the writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Who in turn introduced me to his masterpiece The Little Prince. In the blink of an eye. As if I found myself in a sort of parade of exquisite words and intricate themes. Before my eyes, The Steppenwolf, Shidharta and Narcissus and Golmundo made their appearance. Thus, with the German writer Herman Hesse, I began to travel a path that would also lead me, at a fast pace, to the Metamorphosis by the Czech writer Frankz Kafka. Nor could I avoid the subtle temptation to enter El Túnel by the Argentine writer Ernesto Sábato.

pexels-photo-7181787.jpeg

All those books kept coming into my life, one after the other, as if in a chronological order that someone or something had carefully planned for it to happen. They kept appearing and followed them, Thus Spake Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche, The Raven by Edgar Alan Poe, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair by the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, and so on, many other titles lined up.

How many brilliant minds have aligned, since then, until today. As the planets, the sun and the stars are aligned in astrology, to illuminate my path, while I have the honor of enjoying your different writings, in this short journey that has touched me. I keep hoping that many others will join, little by little, to this extraordinary group, to continue having the joy of reading, reading and reading.

Emulating the French philosopher Albert Camus, and saving, of course, the abysmal distance that separates me from him and his particular circumstance when he did it. I feel the imperious need to write a letter of full appreciation. And more than the need, it is the duty to thank with all my soul, that something or that invisible someone, who has been indicating and guiding me, during all this time, towards what I should read, and who, above all, has helped me to cultivate the joy of reading a book.

Thank you very much for reading these words and see you soon!
.

"Here is my secret, which could not be simpler: only with the heart can one see well; what is essential is invisible to the eyes".
