Patras to Durres - the Trip / Patras nach Durres - Die Reise

Last time out, I told you about my intermediate stop in Sarandë, but I left out the voyage itself. I thought that would have been a bit much for one post. So, today covers the voyage from Patras to Durrës, with some info about traveling from Greece to & inside Albania.Letztes Mal erzählte ich von meinem Zwischenstop in Sarandë, nicht aber von dem Weg dorthin. Dachte, das wäre etwas viel für einen Beitrag. Heute gibt es also die Reise von Patras nach Durrës, mit zusätzlichen Infos über das Reisen von Griechenland nach & innerhalb von Albanien.

By now I've found a cheap apartment here. Rented for 3 months, so I have some time to decide what to do with myself. But also time to write, therefore I'll probably post more regularly again. Now to the voyage itself.Inzwischen habe ich eine billige Wohnung hier. Gemietet für 3 Monate, so daß ich Zeit habe, mir über meine Zukunft klar zu werden. Aber auch Zeit, um mal wieder etwas regelmäßiger zu schreiben. Jetzt aber zur Reise.

The trip from Patras to Sarande was almost entirely based on info from Rome2rio, but I didn't book anything online, except the 'hotel' via booking.com. Rome2rio gives you several options. I, of course, chose the cheapest one: bus & ferry.Die Fahrt von Patras nach Sarande basierte fast ausschließlich auf Infos von Rome2rio, ohne jedoch etwas online zu buchen, außer dem 'Hotel' via booking.com. Rome2rio zeigt mehrere Optionen, wovon ich natürlich die billigste wählte: Bus & Fähre.

Not entirely relying on the internet, I went to the KTEL bus station to get infos & to buy a ticket. There I heard that you can't buy a ticket directly to Sarande but only to Corfu, from where you have to buy a separate ticket to take the ferry to Sarande. Had originally planned to stay in Corfu for a day or so, because it's an interesting place in itself, but ...Verließ mich nicht ausschließlich auf das Internet, also ging ich zum KTEL-Busbahnhof für Infos & um eine Fahrkarte zu kaufen. Man sagte mir, daß es keine Tickets direkt nach Sarande gibt, nur bis Korfu, von wo man dann die Fähre nach Sarande nehmen kann. Wollte ursprünglich einen Tag oder länger in Corfu bleiben, da es auch interessant ist, aber ...

... there is only a coach at 11.30 pm. Hence I decided to take the bus to Corfu & then the first (& only?) ferry in the morning to Sarande. I had a lot of luggage, after all, & didn't want to lug it around for hours. Rome2rio gives the travel time from Patras to Sarande as 5.34 hours, but that's more like the time to Corfu only.... es gibt nur einen Bus um 23.30 Uhr. Also entschied ich mich, den Bus zu nehmen & dann direkt mit der ersten (& einzigen?) Fähre am Morgen weiterzufahren. Wollte nicht mein enormes Gepäck stundenlang herumschleppen. Rome2rio nennt eine Zeit von 5:34 Stunden für die Strecke Patras - Sarande, aber das paßt eher für den Weg nur nach Korfu.

On 3 January, I took off from Patras. The coach was half an hour late, because of some traffic problems, & arrived at Igoumenitsa on the northern Greek coast shortly before 4 am. (No pics, for it was night & there was really nothing to see.) There you have to get off the bus (your luggage can stay on) & buy a ticket for the ferry to Corfu. You get on & off the ferry through small side doors at the ramp for vehicles.Am 3. Januar fuhr ich in Patras los. Der Bus war eine halbe Stunde zu spät, wegen irgendwelcher Probleme, & kam in Igoumenitsa an der griechischen Nordküste um kurz vor 4 an. (Keine Bilder, da es dunkel war & es nichts zu sehen gab.) Dort muß man aussteigen (Gepäck kann im Bus bleiben) & ein Ticket für die Fähre nach Korfu kaufen. Man betritt die Fähre durch Seitentüren neben der Fahrzeugrampe.

The ferry left for Corfu at 4 am. I had only a ticket for the deck & stayed outside the whole time, but no one checked, I think. Therefore, if you feel cold, you could probably go inside the lounge as well. After an hour or so, the ferry arrived in Corfu. After leaving the ferry, the bus can be boarded again. Since I wanted to take another ferry to Sarande, I asked whether I could get my luggage & stay in the port. Luckily, that was possible.Die Fähre nach Korfu startet um 4 Uhr. Hatte nur eine Karte für das Deck & blieb dort die ganze Zeit, aber das schien nicht kontrolliert zu werden. Daher kann man wohl ins Innere, wenn einem kalt ist. Nach ungefähr einer Stunde erreichte die Fähre Korfu. Nach dem Verlassen kann man wieder in den Bus steigen. Da ich eine andere Fähre nach Sarande nehmen wollte, fragte ich, ob ich mein Gepäck haben & im Hafen bleiben könne. Glücklicherweise ging das.

The seats were old & mine reclined on its own. & as you can see below, the windows were dirty (hence no photos from the trip) & the frames poorly repaired.Das Innere der Fähre von Korfu nach Sarande. Sitze waren alt & meiner verstellte sich von selbst. & wie man unten sieht, waren die Fenster dreckig (daher auch keine weiteren Bilder) & die Rahmen in schlechtem Zustand.

At the port, I waited for the ticket offices to open. If you have the money & you are inclined to do so, you can get breakfast there from 6 am onwards, I think. At 8 I went to buy a ticket for the ferry to Sarande. Luckily, I didn't wait much longer, for the international port is more than a km to walk from where I landed. & with all my luggage, 1 km is quite a distance.Am Hafen wartete ich, bis die Reiseagenturen öffneten. Wenn man Geld & Laune hat, kann man dort ab 6 Uhr frühstücken. Um 8 verließ ich den Hafen, um ein Ticket für die Fähre nach Sarande zu kaufen. Zum Glück wartete ich nicht länger, denn zum internationalen Hafen muß man mehr als einen km latschen. & mit all meinem Gepäck ist 1km eine ganz schöne Distanz.

The passport check was quick & easy. The ferry crew was very helpful when boarding & the trip to Sarande was smooth sailing. In Sarande there were only 2 customs boxes to check passports. The one I took, of course, couldn't check my passport, because it had no scanner (or it didn't work). But that was the only hickup. I had arrived in Albania.Die Paßkontrolle war schnell & simpel, die Mannschaft der Fähre sehr hilfsbereit mit dem Gepäck & die Fahrt nach Sarande ohne Problem. In Sarande gibt es nur 2 Zollboxen, um Pässe zu prüfen. Der, an den ich mich anstellte, hatte natürlich leider entweder keinen Scanner oder ein Problem. Das war es aber auch. Ich war in Albanien.

From here on, photos are taken from inside the coach to Durres. Particularly in the south, near Sarande, the landscape was really nice.Alle weiteren Fotos stammen aus dem Inneren des Busses nach Durres. Besonders im Süden, nahe Sarande, war die Landschaft sehr reizvoll.

Sarande itself was covered in my last post. What I forgot to mention there is, that you have to be careful when taking a taxi. The driver of the taxi I took from the guesthouse to the bus station tried to rip me off. If you take a taxi in Albania, it's probably a good idea to agree on a price before you get in.Sarande selber wurde schon in meinem letzten Beitrag behandelt. Vergaß dort aber, zu erwähnen, daß man mit den Taxis vorsichtig sein muß. Der Fahrer des Taxis, das ich von der Pension zum Busbahnhof nahm, versuchte, mich zu bescheißen. Wenn man in Albanien ein Taxi nimmt, sollte man wohl am besten vor der Fahrt einen Preis vereinbaren.

Also, you should not necessarily rely on the internet when traveling in Albania. When looking for a way to get to Durres, I checked Rome2rio again & the options given there are bullshit. Luckily, on my exploration of Sarande, I stumbled across the bus station. There I got a ticket for a coach to Durres at 2 pm. It cost only 1500 Lek - roughly 14 Euro - & the ride would be some 4 hours. Quite a difference to Rome2rio suggestions.Man sollte sich auch nicht unbedingt auf das Internet verlassen, wenn man in Albanien reist. Für die Reise nach Durres schaute ich wieder bei Rome2rio & die angebotenen Optionen sind Mist. Zum Glück fand ich bei meiner Erkundung von Sarande zufällig den dortigen Busbahnhof. Dort bekam ich eine Fahrkarte für den Bus nach Durres um 14 Uhr. Die kostete nur 1500 Lek, ca. 14 Euro & die Fahrt dauerte nur etwa 4 Stunden. Ziemlicher Unterschied zu den Angaben bei Rome2rio.

The bus seemed well-maintained & the trip to Durres was smooth, with one stop a bit more than half-way. Particularly the landscape near Sarande was very interesting, with plains & mountains. Could be nice for bicycle trips.Der Bus schien in gutem Zustand zu sein & es gab keine Probleme auf der Fahrt, mit einem Halt ungefähr auf halbem Weg. Vor allem die Landschaft nahe Sarande war sehr interessant mit Ebenen & Bergen. Vermutlich gut für Radtouren.

On arrival in Durres, though, I was surprised again. Literally. I had thought that we would arrive at a big, well-lit bus station & quite a number of people would get off. But the bus stopped at what appeared a dark spot beside the highway. The driver had to call me several times before I noticed that I was meant & this was Durres. I was the only one to get off, the others were going to Tirana.Bei der Ankunft in Durres wurde ich aber wieder überrascht. Hatte einen großen, gut erleuchteten Busbahnhof erwartet, & daß eine Menge Leute dort aussteigen. Aber der Bus hielt im Dunkel nahe der Landstraße. Der Fahrer mußte mich gleich mehrmals rufen, bevor ich merkte, daß er mich meinte & wir in Durres waren. War der einzige, der ausstieg, die anderen fuhren weiter nach Tirana.

Outside it was not as dark as it seemed through the tinted windows, but it still looked not really like a big city. At 6 pm that bus station appeared quite deserted. The driver was so nice, though, to point me to bus stops & taxis. & there was actually a taxi. With a helpful driver, for a change. He took me to the guesthouse.Draußen war es nicht gar so dunkel wie es durch die getönten Scheiben erschien, aber sah immer noch nicht nach Großstadt aus. Um 18 Uhr war dieser Busbahnhof ziemlich verlassen. Der Fahrer zeigte mir netterweise jedoch, wo ich den Bus oder ein Taxi nehmen könnte. & es gab tatsächlich ein Taxi. Mit ausnahmsweise hilfreichem Fahrer. Der brachte mich zur Pension.

In reality it looked great.Ein kleiner Fluß in den Bergen. Das Wasser erschien extrem blau. Kommt bei den Fotos leider nicht so rüber. Besonders das Bild unten enttäuscht etwas. Sah in Realität toll aus.

The guesthouse was another disappointment. The owners told me that my room was not ready, but I could have another one. Only, that one had a bathroom in the hallway. I hate that. But since it was already rather late & at least the internet worked, I stayed there. Because I didn't like the area, anyway, & most cheap rooms for rent seemed to be in another part of Durres, the next day I moved to another guesthouse.Die Pension war auch eine Enttäuschung. Die Eigentümer meinten, mein Zimmer sei nicht fertig, aber ich könnte ein anderes haben. Nur, daß dieses ein Bad auf dem Flur hatte. Hasse das. Aber da es schon spät war & zumindest das Internet funktionierte, blieb ich dort. Da mir die Gegend nicht gefiel & die meisten billigen Wohnungen in einem anderen Teil von Durres lagen, zog ich am nächsten Tag in eine andere Pension.

Again with a bathroom in the hallway! Worse, a bathroom shared between 2 rooms. But because the owners assured me that I would have the bathroom for myself & they would put other guests in other floors, I stayed there. For a whole week. Until I found an apartment for rent. Funnily, at the beach, just a km or so from the guesthouse I stayed at first.Auch mit Bad auf dem Flur! Schlimmer noch, ein Bad mit einem anderen Zimmer geteilt. Allerdings versicherten mir die Eigentümer, daß ich ein Bad für mich hätte & andere Gäste auf höheren Etagen untergebracht würden. Also blieb ich. Für eine ganze Woche, bis ich eine Wohnung fand. Lustigerweise am Strand, nur etwa 1 km von der ersten Pension entfernt.

Since I have a huge backlog from Patras & China, I will have to find a way how to organise my future posts. We'll see.
