China pledges to stop building new coal energy plants abroad

""China will step up support for other developing countries in developing green and low-carbon energy, and will not build new coal-fired power projects abroad," Mr Xi said"

--- Well, did he actually say that? It seems the original Chinese was a bit more ambiguous. Either way, as usual, you shouldn't just simply trust Chinese promises. Wait, see, check & double-check.

"Crucial details will need to be cleared up; when will this take effect? Will it cover new power plants approved but not yet built? Will China also stop financing new coal fired power stations abroad?"

--- We will see. China can sell wind turbines or solar panels instead. So, it wouldn't necessarily lose any money by stopping the export of coal power plants.

"The biggest question remains: When will this country start to cut the overall number within its borders and substantially reduce its dependency on the most polluting form of power generation?"

--- Nothing new there. Emperor Xi just repeated the (rather empty) promises from before.

‘Betting on a low-carbon future’: why China is ending foreign coal investment

"It also sends a message to the global south, that China is betting on a low-carbon future and China aims to be leading supplier and financier for developing countries of those clean technologies and infrastructures."

--- Financier. Which means they will give loans to countries so they can buy stuff in China. Total altruism.

"While international commentaries have been heavily focused on the economic ramification of the potential collapse of Evergrande, China’s second largest property developer, in recent weeks, Hale thinks this crisis may ultimately be of more significance to the climate."

--- True, actually. If the property market in China crashes, they will need & produce much less cement & steel.

Evergrande: Crisis-hit firm strikes China debt deal

"In a statement filed with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in mainland China, Hengda Real Estate Group said it had reached an agreement with holders of the onshore bond over the repayment.
However, the statement did not reveal how much interest would be paid or when any payment would be made. The filing also did not mention the offshore bond.
[...] On Monday, Evergrande also reportedly missed interest payments to at least two of its biggest lenders."

--- Hence not much changed. Still no clarity.

Internet Sleuths Uncover Joint Proposal Of US NGO And Wuhan Institute of Virology To Do Dangerous Research On Bat Coronaviruses

"DRASTIC [...] have now unearthed a joint proposal by United States Non-Governmental Organisation EcoHealth Alliance led by Peter Daszak and Wuhan Institute of Virology that intended to do dangerous research on bat coronaviruses in China"

--- The more we find out about EcoHealth Alliance, the more we understand why Daszak tried to paint the lab-leak idea as a conspiracy theory.

"The idea was to inject deadly chimeric bat coronaviruses collected by the WIV into humanised and 'batified' mice. The proposal termed ‘DEFUSE’ was "ultimately rejected for full funding (but leaving open the door for partial funding), in part because it mis-interpreted the Gain of Function guidelines"
[...] The part of grant proposal which has never been made public until now proposes "vaccinating wild bats using aerosolized viruses and further work on published and unpublished strains that could have directly produced SARS-CoV-2""

--- Sounds bad enough, but it gets better:

""We will analyze all SARSr-CoV S gene sequences for... proteolytic cleavage sites in S2 and for the presence of potential Furin cleavage sites..[W]e will introduce appropriate human-specific cleavage sites and evaluate growth potential in Vero cells and HAE cultures,”"

--- Exactly that feature of the Wuhan Virus that stumped the experts. But, hey, the proposal was rejected. & therefore we can be absolutely sure that the WIV did not do any such research, even with Chinese funds. Absolutely sure.

Lithuania urges people to throw away Chinese phones

"Xiaomi’s flagship Mi 10T 5G phone was found to have software that could detect and censor terms including “Free Tibet”, "Long live Taiwan independence" or "democracy movement"
[...] In Europe, this capability had been switched off on these models, but the report argued it could be remotely activated at any time"

--- & Xiaomi would obviously never ever do that. Unless, of course, if the CCP tells them to do so. Anyway, more interesting:

"the Xiaomi device was transferring encrypted phone usage data to a server in Singapore
[...] The official Huawei application store AppGallery directs users to third-party e-stores where some of the applications have been assessed by anti-virus programs as malicious or infected with viruses"

--- Simple solution: Don't use any Chinese communication soft- or hardware.

Concern over ‘censorship’ rules of NZ-Chinese news site

"Skykiwi.com promotes itself as New Zealand’s “most influential” Chinese-language media outlet, with half a million ‘daily average user visits’
[...] According to the laws of China and New Zealand, this community [i.e. Skykiwi] is obliged to immediately stop transmission, save relevant records, report to relevant state agencies, and delete addresses, directories, or shut down servers that contain the content."

--- NZ media operating in NZ have to oblige to Chinese law?

"Skykiwi did not respond to emailed queries about its forum’s terms of service when initially approached for this story in July.
But after the questions were sent, Newsroom found that the page was updated, with the line about Chinese laws removed and replaced with a reference to “two countries,” suggesting that the text was curated but the policy had not changed."

--- Surely, the NZ government is furious about the attempt to introduce Chinese laws & regulations in NZ?! Oh, well, it's NZ:

"the Government also had work programmes underway in response to the broader issues raised. A review was underway into the regulatory regime for media content, while "we are constantly reviewing our safeguards to ensure we have the right tools to respond to potential issues of foreign interference""

--- Translation: Nothing will be done.

The casualties of China’s education crackdown

"Of the seemingly infinite number of idiomatic couplets in the Chinese language, there are few that more consistently apply to discussions of political economy than “上有政策,下有对策 (shàng yǒu zhèng cè , xià yǒu duì cè),” loosely translated as “the rulers make the rules, while their subjects find loopholes.”
[...] Demand hasn’t changed, but regulations have forced large corporate entities to avoid direct involvement with such business. Due to this, the trade will move underground and thus workers (in this case, teachers) have little option other than to freelance without protection of the law."

--- Without protection of the law? More like: under threat from the law.

H5N6 avian influenza case reported in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province

"This is the 44th case reported in China since 2014 and the 20th case reported in less than one year."

--- Interesting that cases rise although animal markets in China should be operating under much stricter rules now.
Also dangerous, because the more cases there are, the greater the risk of a mutation that makes it easily transmissible among humans.

--- Klar doch, sehr historisch. Pfff...
