Personal blog: "Creative people and chaos", by bonzopoe

They say that creative people are scattered, and that feeds my ego while helping me deal with my daily chaos. I've been wanting to be more disciplined when writing for some time, but it's hard for me, really hard sometimes.

I start to write something and in the process another idea occurs to me, and I don't finish either one. And I also have a ton of other ideas on the waiting list jotted down in a few lists of ideas for publications, text files on my phone and computer with a lot of things half done, and even audio recordings that I make half asleep when I come up with an idea while trying to fall asleep.

I don't mind having ideas. I complain about my lack of discipline to develop them. In my defense I must say that developing them is not as simple as it seems, especially those that have an important playful component, such as poetry and stories.

If one is not "in tune" there is no way to flow to develop such texts. One can, but in the end they feel cold, mechanical, lifeless. And if it's hard enough to write something worthwhile when you're in the right mood, it's very hard to do it any other way.

Before starting to write this, I was writing something else that I hope to finish tomorrow, a tomorrow that is actually an extremely flexible indefinite time, much like the "ahorita" of Mexicans that foreigners hate so much.

A while ago I was watching a talk between Jordan Peterson and Russell Brand, in which Peterson told Brand that creative people have trouble defining their identity because everything catches their attention and they jump from one thing to another.

That is why people like Leonardo Da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, inventor and many other things, to cite just one of the best known examples, but on the other hand, creative people often have problems monetizing their creativity, which at least partly explains not only my presence, but that of many more interesting and valuable people in this community, and others like it.

So it seems we are doomed to chaos, at least in part. And while we all inhabit chaos, whether we are aware of it or not, creative people have the advantage that it is a fertile field for us, even if we don't always know how to harvest it in the most economically profitable way.

What do we have left? Well, for starters, accept it. And from there, look for simple ways to counteract it, and/or minimize its negative impacts. Create routines, try to be more disciplined, and things like that. There is a lot of literature on this, James Clear's "Atomic Habits" comes to mind, but there are many others.

They have the inconvenience of having one foot in the often maligned self-help literature, but not infrequently it contains really practical and easy-to-apply tips or advice. It is a matter of having broad criteria and not being very prejudiced, I believe.

Well, I think that instead of being here rambling about things that I had not planned to do, I better start revising some of my texts halfway. They say that inspiration has to be caught by working, or at least trying, so you never know, maybe I'll get lucky and I'll come up with the idea for a book that will take me out of poverty and finally make my creativity and chaos profitable. In the end, dreaming costs nothing.
