Cuadros por segundo 005: "Dune (2021)" movie review, by bonzopoe [EN / ES]

Yesterday I saw the new version of Dune by canadian director Denis Villeneuve, and to be honest it has left me mixed feelings, now I explain why.

The workmanship of the film is flawless, visually speaking it is surprising. The production design is spectacular and the attention to detail is evident, creating a very clear style in all elements of the film, from the costumes to the impressive and stylized ships that appear in the film.

The photography is wonderful, super careful from shot to shot, and the scenes in the desert, one of the characters in the film, are immersive, almost hypnotizing. The casting is very good, and except for one character, whose name I reserve, the performances are excellent.

The music by the experienced Hans Zimmer goes very well with the film, and overall this is an excellent film, with very little to criticize it. So far so good, but ...

I consider it to be a movie that not everyone will like for several reasons. We are here in front of an auteur cinema, and it shows. The film feels stylized, with a very personal stamp, and maybe not everyone will like that stamp, especially if they saw the David Lynch version.

It is a serious and dramatic film, intense, focused more on the psychology of the characters than on the action, which of course there is, and very well achieved, but not as the center of the story.

It has a structure that can confuse some, since it has many scenes of visions that can disorient the viewer, especially if it is their first approach to this great work by Frank Herbert.

And finally, and what in particular left me with a bittersweet taste in my mouth, is that it does not present the complete story, but only the beginning, and in the end one is left with that feeling that in two and a half hours you only saw, if anything, half the storie.

For those who are fans of Dune, like the one who writes these lines, it is something we can bear, and wait for the second part to be able to have a complete evaluation of this adaptation of one of the most important classics of science fiction, but for someone who goes to the movies to have a good time and forget about his/her problems, this may not be so pleasant.

In short, we are facing a possible new classic. An excellently well-made film, but that gives us only part of the story, and that may not be for all tastes, because except for not having a lot of explicit violence, and thus being accessible to all audiences, it is not a film complacent that seeks to please the masses, but a film that takes seriously being a good adaptation of one of the most challenging and influential stories in the history of science fiction literature, but which to some may seem slow, and even boring

It only remains to give time to time, to see the impact and real success that this film can have, one that is definitely worth seeing.

Ayer vi la nueva versión de Dune del director canadiense Denis Villeneuve, y para ser honesto me ha dejado sentimientos encontrados, ahora les explico porque.

La manufactura de la película es intachable, visualmente hablando es sorprendente. El diseño de producción es espectacular y se nota la atención a los detalles, creando un estilo muy claro en todos elementos de la película, desde el vestuario hasta las impresionantes y estilizadas naves que aparecen en el filme.

La fotografía es maravillosa, super cuidada de toma a toma, y las escenas en el desierto, uno de los personajes de la película, son envolventes, casi hipnotizantes. El casting es muy bueno, y salvo un personaje, cuyo nombre me reservo, las actuaciones son excelentes.

La música a cargo del experimentado Hans Zimmer va muy bien con la película, en general esta se trata de una excelente película, con muy pocas cosas que criticarle. Hasta aquí todo bien, pero...

Considero que es una película que no le gustará a todo mundo por varias razones. Estamos aquí ante un cine de autor, y se nota. La película se siente estilizada, con un sello muy personal, y puede que no a todo mundo le guste ese sello, sobre todo si vieron la versión de David Lynch.

Se trata de una película seria y dramática, intensa, centrada más en la sicología de los personajes que en la acción, que por supuesto que la hay, y muy bien lograda, pero no como centro de la historia.

Tiene una estructura que puede confundir a algunos, ya que tiene muchas escenas de visiones que pueden desorientar al espectador, sobre todo si es su primera acercamiento a esta gran obra de Frank Herbert.

Y finalmente, y lo que en particular me dejo un con sabor agridulce en la boca, es que no presenta la historia completa, sino solo el inicio, y al final uno se queda con esa sensación de que en dos horas y media solo viste, si acaso, la mitad de la película.

Para quienes son fans de Dune, como quien les escribe, es algo que podemos soportar, y esperar a la segunda parte para poder tener una evaluación completa de esta adaptación de uno de los clásicos más importantes de la ciencia ficción, pero para alguien que va al cine para pasar un buen rato y olvidarse de sus problemas, puede que esto no sea tan agradable.

En resumen estamos ante un posible nuevo clásico. Una película excelentemente bien hecha, pero que nos entrega solo una parte de la historia, y que puede que no sea para todos los gustos, porque salvo no tener mucha violencia explícita, y ser así accesible a todo público, no se trata de una película complaciente que busca agradar a las masas, sino de una película que se toma en serio el ser una buena adaptación de una de las historias más desafiantes e influyentes de la historia de la literatura de la ciencia ficción, pero que a algunos puede parecer lenta, e incluso aburrida

Solo queda dar tiempo al tiempo, para ver el impacto y éxito real que pueda tener esta película, que definitivamente vale la pena ver.
