Dubai has a long history with slavery dating back to the 18th century, when it was nothing more than a fishing town that began to get rich by importing slaves from Africa and South Asia, who worked in the quarries on fishing boats and collected pearls.

This tradition continues to the present, as 99 per cent of Dubai's workforce are immigrants from Ethiopia, India and Pakistan to countries as far away as Nepal and the Philippines and have no rights under emirates law.

The pay is less than what you were promised in your country of origin, so you cannot pay the loan you took out to pay for your trip, this together with the high cost of living in Dubai thanks to constant and permanent inflation, leaves the immigrants with a growing debt and without being able to send anything to their families, this is while there is work.

The most common thing in Dubai is that companies or construction projects disappear overnight or simply cut staff without notice, due to economic crises such as in 2008 with the real estate crisis, in 2014 with the oil crisis and in 2020 with the Plandemic, leaving tens of thousands of immigrants without work, in a country that does not want them if they cannot be exploited.

Deportation costs money and it is something for those who have not worked for months, they do not have, so Dubai takes care that no one sees them, especially tourists, and they wait for them to simply disappear; sleeping in the parks with the metro will only make you creditor to more fines, which will be added to your debt and without money, returning to your country is not an option and this type of thing does not only happen to construction workers who live crammed into small dormitories for 10 people sharing a bathroom between 40 people.

It also happens to middle-class people from developed countries who end up returning with more debt than they had when they left, after working hard for years with the constant threat of being replaced at any moment.

If you are an immigrant, you are a lower class than Dubai residents and therefore you have no rights, but as always, the worst part falls to women. The abuses that immigrant women receive are even less visible than men because the vast majority work in cleaning services in private places, where they are at the mercy of their employers without even showing their faces outside since they need permission to leave their property.

Thousands of deaths and disappearances occur in this way, to the extent that some countries such as the Philippines have prohibited their population, especially women, from traveling to Arab countries to look for work, this is not surprising for a country that promotes its vacations on the beach with images of women covered in black in a climate of more than 40, it is essential to give the waiter a good tip so that he continues to bring the drinks and dehydration does not occur.

In short, Dubai behind all its money, filthy money and prop glamor should be recognized as a guide to everything we shouldn't do, we can learn from its bad example to do exactly the opposite.
