Mother's Diamond Ring Discovered

Nnenna and her first daughter Adanne woke up earlier in the morning to go to the farm to uproot cassava. As they were fast walking, Nnenna missed her steps and fell down. While on the ground, she cried, 'Oh God why is my husband my worst enemy?' And Adanne, trying to help said, 'Mama, please stop crying and get up, for God will help us since papa decided not to be a responsible man, he prefer alcohol to us.'
Nnenna said 'Each time I look at you and your siblings, I feel bad not knowing what the future holds for you. I am tired of this marriage.
Adanne, 'Mama, everything will be fine. don't allow papa to make you pregnant again'

Nnenna responded with a heavy heart, 'My daughter, it's not my wish to have more than four children, but your father cannot let me have peace. Since you and your 5 siblings are girls, I pray this 7th pregnancy will be a boy so I can rest.

As they got home, Mr. Amadi, Nnenna's s husband, was about to go out as usual. 'Good morning, papa,' said Adanne, and Mr. Amadi responded, 'What is good about this morning? Like daughter, like mother.' He mounted his bicycle to his carpentry workshop. The girls, when they heard the voice of mother, came out of the room yawning, and saying welcome mama. Then Nnenna asked Nkechi to go inside the room and get a tuba of yam for breakfast. But Adanne said, 'Mama, go and rest, I will cook the yam'.

As she dished some yam for Nnenna, she said, 'You people should eat.' But Adanne replied, 'Mama, pease eat, for you are also important.'
Nnenna looked at Adanne and said, 'God bless you, my daughter . Each time I look at you I see a reason to live, for you are my treasure.' Nnenna smiled and said, 'Mama, when you finish eating, I have something important to discuss with you.'

After three hours, Nnenna went to her girls' room and asked, 'Adanne, what is bothering you?' Adanne replied, 'Mama I want to go and stay with Mr. and Mrs. Jones. They are rich and they said if I live with them, they will send me to secondary school.' Nnenna said to her daughter, 'Staying with people who are not related to you is not easy. Stay here, let's manage. When I get money, you will go to school again. Adanne continued, 'Mama, it's been one year since I left primary school. By next year, Nkechi will still finish her primary school, and what's next?

As Mr. Amadi came back home that night, his wife told him of Nnenna's decision to go and start staying with Mr. and Mrs. Jones. He said, 'If she wants to go this night, she can start going for all I care.'
Nnenna exclaimed, ' Amadi, is that all you can say?' Amadi replied, 'For your information, woman, if you don't give birth to a boy, you and your girls will leave my house.

That night, sleep eluded Nnenna. She asked Adanne to come sleep with her, and in the middle of the night, she woke her 13-year-old daughter up and told her the story of her life. How she lost her parents in a motor accident when she was 8 years old and was raised by her grandmother until she became sick and died when she was 19 years old.

Adanne hugged her mother and said, 'Mama, it's okay. I will make you proud. I promise.'
Finally, Nnenna went to her wooden box, brought out a ring she wrapped with an old wrapper, and handed the ring to her daughter, and said, 'My grandmother gave me this ring and said to me, "Nnem, any time you are in great difficulty, bring it out and show it to someone you trust. Please keep it well." As Adanne was about to collect the ring, she thought in her heart, 'Why is my mother giving me her treasure? Maybe she wants to die.'
She told her mum she would collect the ring on one condition, and her mother asked what. 'Mama, promise me that you will not die, even if death comes.'
Nnenna 'I must live for you and your sisters and make your father know that girls are children.'

Two days after Mr. Jones came and picked Adanne to the city, Mr. Jones' children, Mike and Mary, did not like Adanne at first sight. However, after a few weeks, they fell in love with her due to her good behavior. A week later, Adanne was enrolled in a secondary school by Mr. and Mrs. Jones, and she was grateful to them. Despite being busy with domestic work, Adanne, being intelligent and knowing what she wants in life, studys every night and asks God for divine wisdom.

At the end of that term, she took first place, but Mike and Mary did not do well. Mr. Jones loved Adanne like his child because of her good character and academic excellence.

At the end of the second term, Adanne took first place again. Two days later, Mr. Jones asked her to make one wish, and it would be granted. She wished to see her siblings.

The next day, Mr. Jones took Adanne and his children to visit her family. Fortunately for Adanne, her mother had given birth to a baby boy a week before their visit. Adanne carried her brother in her arms and said, "God, thank you ," then looked at her mother's face, saying, "Mama, I named him Iheanacho, meaning our heart's desire. Hope papa is happy with you" Nnenna replied, "Your father is happy with himself and his son." After giving the baby to her mother, she started hugging her siblings one by one, then said to Nkechi, "Please take good care of Mama. God will make a way for you too.

As they were about to leave, Mr. Jones gave Mrs. Amadi an envelope, she collected it, and said, "Mr. Jones, God bless you for putting a smile on our faces and taking good care of Adanne." Mr. Jones replied, "You're welcome. For your information, we have adopted Adanne as our daughter."

When Nnenna counted the money, she exclaimed, "N50,000! Unbelievable! God, please bless Mr. Jones for me." She smiled at Nkechi, her second daughter, and said, " Your going to secondary school is settled"

A month later, Adanne had a dream where a woman told her to show Mr. Jones the ring her mother gave her for the benefit of all.

After dinner that evening, Adanne showed Mr. Jones the ring, When he saw it, he asked Adanne, "Who gave you this treasure?" Adanne replied, "Daddy, my mother gave it to me." He inquired, "Where did she get it from?" Adanne replied, "Her mother gave it to her." As Mr. Jones collected the diamond ring, he started crying and said, "Illiteracy is a bad disease. People can have what will make them rich and yet die in poverty." He told Ada that God has changed her family's level from grass to grace. Adanne asked, "What do you mean, Daddy?" Mr. Jones replied, "What you have is called a treasure, and it's worth millions of naira. Go to bed; I will send for your mother tomorrow."

That night, he urgently messaged Nnenna to visit them within the week, as he didn't want her irresponsible husband to know about the diamond ring. When Nnenna was on her way to Mr. and Mrs. Jones' house, she thought something bad had happened to her daughter. When she saw her daughter, she asked, "Adanne, is everything fine?" Adanne assured her, "Yes, Mom. Come inside the house."

Upon entering the sitting room, Adanne informed Mr. and Mrs. Jones that her mother had arrived. Mr. Jones came out of his bed room with the ring. After exchanging pleasantries, Mr. Jones asked, "Mrs. Amadi, are you the one who gave your daughter this ring?" She replied, "Yes. I hope we're safe."
Mr Jones, "Madam, your mother gave you her treasure, and ignorance stole it from you." Nnenna said, "I am confused here, sir. Please stop speaking in parables."
Mrs. Jones clarified, "What my husband means is that you will be rich. If you sell this ring'

Mr. Jones continued, "Madam, you are a millionaire now." Hearing this, Nnenna became unconscious and started shouting, "I am dreaming! Somebody wake me up." After ten minutes, she regained consciousness and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Jones, you are God-sent. How and where can it be sold?"
Mr. Jones assured her, "I will take care of that. In less than a week, you will be a millionaire." Adanne smiled and said, "I have to leave now; my breast is heavy. Perhaps my son is crying."

Mrs. Jones laughed and said "We will drop you off at your house, for excessive excitement can make you lose your way."

I felt like I was seeing a movie. This is an interesting read, they have a treasure yet they suffer because they we're ignorant of it's worth.
A great turn of events on the discovery of a wealth hidden in a treasured ring.

Hmm. Ignorance and illiteracy are disease indeed. So, all these while, they had a ring that could make them rich.. Well, I guess, it happened that way so that Nnenna's husband won't know and then betray them. Now, they know what to do since Mr Jones had helped them out by explaining to them; he is also a good man too. What a nice story!

Perhaps Adanne can live with her family again, or at least her mother and siblings! The only missing piece in the story is how Nnenna will break away from her terrible husband. Thank you for sharing your story in The Ink Well and for reading and commenting on the work of other community members.
