Hello everyone. Last week, we had a few jobs in Selçuk district. After we got our work done, we wanted to walk around a bit. We already know that it is a historical town. Ephesus Ancient City, one of the most important and distinguished ancient cities of our country, is here. I wrote a few articles about Ephesus before. Today I want to show you a place with very important history and values. This is the temple of Artemis, one of the 7 wonders of the world.

Herkese merhaba. Geçtiğimiz haftalarda Selçuk ilçesinde birkaç işimiz vardı. İşlerimizi hallettikten sonra biraz dolaşmak istedik. Zaten tarihi bir ilçe olduğunu biliyoruz. Ülkemizin en önemli ve en önde gelen antik kentlerinden biri olan Efes antik kenti burada. Efes ile ilgili daha önceden birkaç paylaşım yapmıştım. Bugün sizlere yine çok önemli tarihe ve değerlere sahip bir yer göstermek istiyorum. Burası dünyanın 7 harikasından birisi olan Artemis tapınağı.

I was very excited to see one of the seven wonders of the world. Artemis today seemed to be spread over a not very wide flat area. We could not hide our surprise when we saw the information we read from the information board at the entrance. It has been proven that this area served as a cult site from the beginning of the Iron Age. The earliest architectural remains were a temple structure in the center of the sanctuary, built in 680/650 BC, surrounded by colonnaded galleries to the west. Closed for protection, this peripteros is the oldest Greek temple surrounded by columns. Archaic temple, according to ancient sources, BC. Many were destroyed in a fire in 356 BC by a man named Herostrato. In the new temple belonging to the Late Classical Period, the construction of which began immediately after, all the important structural elements of its predecessor were repeated, except for the figure and the pea roof edge (sima). Girişteki bilgilendirme panosundan okuduğumuz bilgileri görünce şaşkınlığımızı gizleyemedik. Bu alan Demir Çağı'nın başından itibaren bir kült yeri olarak işlev gördüğü kanıtlanmış. En eski mimari kalıntı İ.Ö 680/650'de kutsal alanın merkezinde yapılmış olan batı doğrultulu etrafı sütunlu galerilerle çevrilmiş bir tapınak yapısıymış. Koruma amacı ile kapatılmış bu peripteros, etrafı sütunlarla çevrili en eski Grek tapınağıdır. Arkaik tapınak, antik kaynakların aktarımına göre İ.Ö. 356'da Herostrato adındaki bir kişinin çıkardığı yangında büyük çoğunluğu yok olmuş. Yapımını hemen ardından başlanan Geç Klasik Dönem'e ait yeni tapınakta, figürle bezelye çatı kenarı (sima) dışında öncülünün tüm önemli yapı öğeleri tekrarlanmış. Yeni yapılan yapının da detaylı boyutları bilgi panosunda yazmakta.📋

The temple was the result of a 120-year project initiated by the Lydian King of Sidon, Croesus Antipater, who compiled the seven wonders of the world, and he described the temple as follows. Above proud Babylon I saw the wall of chariots and the statue of Zeus in Alpheus and the hanging gardens and the column of the Sun and the colossal artifact of the tall pyramids and the vast tomb of Mausolos; but when I saw the house of Artemis built on the clouds, all the other wonders faded and I said, "There! Outside of Olympus, the Sun has never looked at anything this big." Philo of Byzantium wrote about the temple: I saw the great work of the ancient Babylonians and the tomb of Mausoleus. However, when he saw the temple in Ephesus rise to the clouds, he said that he was overshadowed by the others.
Resource. As we understand from this information, the Temple of Artemis was quite high compared to its surroundings. People who saw it felt very close to the sky. However, over the centuries, it has lost its gigantic height due to factors such as earthquakes, fires and wars. Only a small part of this temple, which was made entirely of marble, has survived.

Tapınak Lidya Kralı Kroisos tarafından başlatılmış 120 senelik bir projenin eseriymiş Dünyanın yedi harikasını derleyen Sidon'lu Antipater tapınağı şöyle tarif etmiş.

Bu bilgilerden anladığımız kadarıyla Artemis Tapınağı çevresine göre oldukça yüksekmiş. Buraya gören insanlar gökyüzüne çok yakın olduklarını hissediyorlarmış. Ancak yüzyıllar boyunca gerçekleşen deprem, yangın, savaş gibi etkenlerle devasa yüksekliğini kaybetmiş. Tamamı mermerden yapılmış bu tapınağın günümüzde çok az bir kısmı ayakta kalabilmiş.

During our trip, several people were performing rituals with some figures. We made our trip more precise so as not to disturb them. It was quite sad to see these sad ruins of this temple, which is very impressive as a whole. However, it still makes us happy to see the traces of the past.🏰

Bizim gezimiz sırasında birkaç kişi bazı figürlerle ritüel gerçekleştiriyorlardı. Onları rahatsız etmemek için gezimizi daha hassas yapmıştık. Bütün hali çok etkileyici olan bu tapınağın bu hüzünlü kalıntılarını görmek oldukça hüzünlüydü. Ancak yine de geçmişe ait izleri görmek bizi mutlu ediyor. 🏰

I thought of more flamboyant and gigantic visuals for a building that entered the list of 7 wonders of the world. However, we had previously received suggestions from our friends to keep our expectations high. Still it was a very nice ancient temple tour. Thanks for reading.🌼🌸✨🌺
