Se terminó el mundial y, con el pitazo final, llegó el momento de analizar las cosas con la cabeza fría, lejos de toda la ola de desinformación y comentarios malintencionados que inundaron las redes sociales antes y durante el torneo.

Para quienes saben de este deporte, está claro que Lionel Messi es el mejor jugador del mundo. Quizás pasen muchísimos años antes de que volvamos a ver a alguien con ese talento innato y esa capacidad sobrehumana para leer el juego. Porque Messi no solo juega para él, sino para hacer funcionar a todo un equipo, y es precisamente esa cualidad la que lo diferencia del resto. Por eso me disfruté cada uno de sus últimos partidos de principio a fin.

The World Cup is over, and with the final whistle, the time has come to analyze things with a cool head, far from the flood of misinformation and malicious comments that inundated social media before and during the tournament.

For those who know the sport, it’s clear that Lionel Messi is the best player in the world. It may be many, many years before we see someone again with that innate talent and that superhuman ability to read the game. Because Messi doesn’t just play for himself—he plays to make the whole team function—and it is precisely that quality that sets him apart from the rest. That’s why I enjoyed every single one of his last matches from start to finish.

Ahora bien, hay que ser honestos y objetivos: en la gran final, la selección española fue ampliamente superior desde el primer minuto. España minimizó a Argentina; los jugadores albicelestes en ningún momento se sintieron cómodos en la cancha, se les veía atados y sin poder desplegar su juego habitual. Si no hubiera sido por las intervenciones providenciales del Dibu Martínez, la diferencia en el marcador habría sido escandalosa. La realidad es que España llegó como la gran favorita y lo demostró en la cancha, coronándose con un nivel de juego impecable donde solo permitieron un gol en todo el mundial. ¡Una auténtica locura de estadística para una final sumamente digna!

Mientras veía el partido, no podía evitar pensar en los escenarios. Argentina aguantó como pudo para evitar una goleada histórica. ¿Pero qué hubiera pasado si el juego se estiraba hasta la tanda de penaltis y Argentina terminaba siendo campeona? En ese escenario, ¿se habría sentido realmente bien esa victoria? Sinceramente creo que no. Al ver que el equipo no podía sostener la pelota ni generar remates al arco rival durante casi todo el encuentro (salvo por ese chispazo al final donde casi empatan a uno), un triunfo así habría dejado un sabor agridulce. Ganó el que mejor jugó y el que merecía la copa en ese partido.

That said, we must be honest and objective: in the grand final, the Spanish national team was vastly superior from the very first minute. Spain completely dominated Argentina; the Albiceleste players never felt comfortable on the field—they looked stiff and unable to play their usual game.

If it hadn’t been for Dibu Martínez’s miraculous saves, the score would have been a landslide. The reality is that Spain came in as the heavy favorite and proved it on the field, crowning their performance with impeccable play and allowing only one goal throughout the entire World Cup. An absolutely mind-blowing statistic for a truly memorable final!

While watching the game, I couldn’t help but think about different scenarios. Argentina held on as best it could to avoid a historic rout. But what if the game had gone to a penalty shootout and Argentina had ended up winning the championship? In that scenario, would that victory have really felt good?
I honestly don’t think so. Seeing that the team couldn’t keep possession or create shots on goal for almost the entire match (except for that brief spark at the end when they almost tied it up at one), a win like that would have left a bittersweet taste. The team that played better and deserved the trophy in that match won.

Lo triste de todo esto no es perder una final ante un rival superior, sino ver la cantidad de burlas y faltas de respeto hacia un deportista de la talla de Messi. Yo me pregunto: ¿Cómo será recordado en unos años? La historia no se borra con un mal partido y por la cantidad de difamación. Para mí, Messi seguirá siendo un monstruo absoluto del fútbol y me siento afortunada de haber disfrutado sus últimos juegos en un mundial.

Ahora nos toca presenciar el relevo generacional. Ya vienen surgiendo nuevos “cracks” como Lamine Yamal, un muchacho con una calidad técnica y una madurez impresionante para su corta edad. Solo el tiempo dirá si él o algún otro podrá alcanzar la cima y convertirse en el nuevo mejor del mundo.

Por mi parte, me quedo con lo vivido, con la pasión del torneo, con lo bien que jugó la selección y con el privilegio de haber visto a Messi en su máxima expresión.

The sad part of all this isn’t losing a final to a superior opponent, but seeing the amount of mockery and disrespect directed at an athlete of Messi’s stature. I wonder: How will he be remembered in a few years? History isn’t erased by a bad game or by the amount of slander. To me, Messi will continue to be an absolute soccer legend, and I feel lucky to have enjoyed his final games at a World Cup.

Now it’s time for us to witness a generational shift. New “stars” are already emerging, such as Lamine Yamal, a young player with impressive technical skill and maturity for his age. Only time will tell if he or someone else will reach the top and become the new best in the world.

For my part, I’ll cherish the experience, the passion of the tournament, how well the national team played, and the privilege of having seen Messi at his absolute best.
