A few months ago, I mentioned that I had already submitted my research project to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. This is a profession I’ve been passionately pursuing for seven years, but I first set foot in a college classroom in 2022.

Those who know me and have read my story here on Hive know that my first degree was in Food Technology, and I later specialized in Quality Management Systems. However, in 2019, with the exodus of teachers who left in search of a better quality of life, I ended up filling a vacant position at a school. It was there that, unexpectedly, my calling to teach was born.

Hace unos meses les comenté que ya había entregado mi proyecto de investigación para optar al título de Licenciada en Educación Primaria. Esta es una profesión que ya desempeño con amor desde hace siete años, pero cuyas aulas universitarias pisé por primera vez en el 2022.

Los que me conocen y han leído mi historia aquí en Hive, saben que mi primera carrera fue Tecnología de Alimentos y luego me especialicé en Gerencia en Sistemas de Gestión de la Calidad. Sin embargo, en el 2019, con la diáspora de los maestros que migraron en busca de una mejor calidad de vida, quedé ocupando un espacio vacío en una escuela. Fue allí donde, inesperadamente, nació en mí la vocación docente.

I’ve had my ups and downs in this profession. Last year, I went through a very difficult situation that I wouldn’t wish on anyone; I became so depressed that I wanted to give up everything I’d worked for. Fortunately, my colleagues and professors supported me so I wouldn’t quit, since my thesis was almost finished.

Although everything happened at the wrong time—since I wasn’t able to submit it in July of last year as I should have—I really got my act together this year. I was assigned a mentor who became my greatest source of support and a lifesaver (I mentioned her in my previous post), and we successfully submitted my thesis in March.

The good news I have for you today is that I’ve already defended my thesis, and it went great! They called me in late May to let me know that my panel had been assigned and that the date set was June 21. It was great that, in the weeks following the submission of my thesis, I had already started designing the presentation, so I was more or less ahead of schedule—though I still had to make a lot of revisions.

I was working from home, sending my progress updates to my advisor via WhatsApp, and she’d give me relevant suggestions and add details. Once the presentation was ready with what she knew I needed to say, I started putting together my script. At first, I thought there would be too much information to fit into the required 20 minutes. I wrote a very long draft and gradually eliminated details, but made sure to include the main points: my theoretical references, how my work relates to their ideas, and my action plan implemented in the classroom.

He tenido altas y bajas en esta profesión. El año pasado pasé por una situación muy dura que no le deseo a nadie; llegué a deprimirme a tal punto de querer abandonar todo el camino recorrido. Afortunadamente, mis colegas y mis maestras me apoyaron para que no lo dejara, pues ya tenía casi listo el trabajo de grado.

Aunque todo ocurrió a destiempo, ya que no pude entregar en julio del año pasado como correspondía, este año me puse las pilas. Me asignaron una tutora que se convirtió en mi gran apoyo y salvavidas (de ella les hablé en mi post anterior) y logramos entregar con éxito en el mes de marzo.

¡La buena noticia que les tengo hoy es que ya defendí mi proyecto de grado y me fue excelente! Me llamaron a finales de mayo para informarme que ya tenía el jurado asignado y que la fecha elegida era el 21 de junio. Qué bueno que en las semanas siguientes a la entrega del trabajo ya había empezado a diseñar la presentación, así que estaba más o menos adelantada, aunque igual tuve que corregirle muchísimo.

Iba trabajando desde casa, le enviaba los avances a mi tutora por WhatsApp y ella me hacía las sugerencias pertinentes y añadía detalles. Una vez lista la presentación con lo que ella sabía que yo debía decir, empecé a armar mi guion. Al principio pensé que sería demasiada información para los menos de 20 minutos reglamentarios. Hice un borrador superlargo y poco a poco fui descartando datos, pero cuidando de incluir lo principal: mis referentes teóricos, la relación de mi trabajo con su pensamiento y mi plan de acción desarrollado en el aula.

I feel like things just fell into place in an extraordinary way. I knew I also had to put together some nice folders for the jury and a small gift, but I understood that what matters isn’t what you give them, but how you present yourself and defend your research.

I asked a friend who does school projects to make five folders that were simple, pretty, and—very importantly—within my budget. She did the math, and each one cost me just $3. They turned out beautiful and were super affordable. For refreshments, my niece baked me a dozen delicate cupcakes decorated in blue and white. Even though I was so busy with my studies that I forgot to take pictures of them, they looked spectacular. With everything ready, all that was left was to study, study, and study.

Siento que las cosas se me fueron dando de manera extraordinaria. Sabía que además debía preparar unas lindas carpetas para el jurado y un pequeño obsequio, pero entendiendo que lo importante no es lo que les das, sino cómo te desenvuelves y defiendes tu investigación.

Le encargué a una amiga que hace trabajos escolares cinco carpetas que fueran sencillas, bonitas y, muy importante, que no se salieran de mi presupuesto. Ella sacó la cuenta y cada una me salió en tan solo 3 dólares. Quedaron hermosas y súper económicas. Para el refrigerio, mi sobrina me preparó una docena de cupcakes decorados en azul y blanco muy delicados. Aunque con las carreras se me olvidó tomarles fotos, lucían espectaculares. Ya con todo listo, lo demás fue estudiar, estudiar y estudiar.

The big day arrived, and for a moment I felt really nervous. However, I knew I was well prepared and had practiced so much that just by looking at the slide I would know exactly what was coming next in my script. I was third to go. When I walked in, my mentor helped me get everything organized.

I had brought the materials the children had prepared during the project and the ones I used as additional support; I wanted to lay everything out on a table, but my mentor suggested a great idea: that I show them one by one as I talked about them while describing the activities. It was an excellent strategy that gave me a lot of confidence, because I could see that the judges were extremely interested in what I was saying and what I was showing them.

El gran día llegó y por un momento me sentí súper nerviosa. Sin embargo, sabía que estaba bien preparada y había practicado tanto que con solo mirar la lámina sabría exactamente qué venía en mi guion. Fui la tercera en pasar. Cuando entré, mi tutora me ayudó a organizar todo.

Yo había llevado el material que prepararon los niños durante el proyecto y el que yo utilicé como apoyo adicional; quería colocarlo todo en una mesa, pero mi tutora me sugirió una idea genial: que los fuera mostrando a medida que hablaba de ellos en la descripción de las acciones. Fue una excelente estrategia que me llenó de seguridad, porque vi al jurado sumamente interesado en mis palabras y en lo que les estaba enseñando.

When I started speaking, I could feel my legs shaking, but by the time I moved on to the second slide of the presentation, my nerves had completely vanished. The rest of the presentation flowed naturally, just as I had rehearsed it a thousand times in front of the mirror.

Now you can understand why I took a step back from Hive this past month; all my attention and energy were focused on this goal that I was so eager to achieve. In the end, the jury had nothing but words of congratulations and praise for me, which made me immensely happy. I already have my letter of acceptance in hand, and all that’s left is to wait for the graduation ceremony to finally see this wonderful goal come to fruition.

Cuando empecé a hablar sentía que las piernas me temblaban, pero en lo que pasé a la segunda lámina de la presentación, los nervios se esfumaron por completo. El resto de la defensa fluyó de manera natural, tal cual lo había ensayado mil veces frente al espejo.

Ahora pueden entender por qué me alejé un poco de Hive este último mes; toda mi atención y energía estaban puestas en esta meta que tanto anhelaba culminar. Al final, el jurado solo tuvo palabras de felicitación y elogios para mí, lo que me hizo inmensamente feliz. Ya tengo mi carta de aprobación en mano y solo me queda esperar la fecha del acto de grado para ver, por fin, esta hermosa meta concluida.
