Christmas gifts // Regalos de Navidad

It’s been a few years since my children found out that it wasn’t Baby Jesus who brought them their Christmas presents, but us (their parents). Andrés was nine years old and in fourth grade when a classmate told him, and then he told Andrea, although she had been more observant and had already begun to suspect something, so she searched the whole house until she found out where we had hidden the gifts. She told me this last December.

Although they are now teenagers and know the truth, my husband and I have wanted to keep the magic alive and still give them a gift at Christmas. Of course, they no longer write letters to Baby Jesus with a list of things they want; now they have to wait until Christmas Day to find out what we bought them. In recent years, my husband and I have gotten together to think about what we can give them based on their needs. Last year, my son needed a backpack to carry his things to practice, and my daughter was starting to want to style her hair and asked to borrow a flat iron to straighten it. Well, those were their gifts.

Ya han pasado algunos años desde que mis hijos se enteraron que quien le traía los regalos de Navidad no era el Niño Jesús, sino nosotros (sus padres), Andrés tenía 9 años y estaba en cuarto grado cuando un compañero de clases le contó y bueno después él le contó a Andrea, aunque ella ha sido más pilas y ya había empezado a sospechar, entonces realizaba la búsqueda por toda la casa hasta saber donde habíamos escondido los regalos, esto me lo contó este diciembre.

Aunque ya son unos adolescentes y conocen la verdad, mi esposo y yo hemos querido mantener la magia y de igual manera hacerles un obsequio en Navidad. Claro, ya no le hacen carta al Niño Jesús con una lista de cosas, ahora tienen que esperar el día para saber que le compramos. Estos últimos años mi esposo y yo nos hemos reunido para pensar que les podemos dar según sus necesidades. El año pasado mi hijo necesitaba un morral para llevar sus cosas al entrenamiento y mi hija estaba empezando a querer arreglarse el cabello y pedía prestada una plancha para alisar su cabello, bueno, esos fueron sus regalos.

Well, this year, Andrés is working as a barber, and when we bought him his first tools, the shaver wasn’t included in the set, so we thought it would be an excellent gift for him, as we continue to encourage his business venture, which is something he enjoys.

Este año las cosas han estado un poco fuertes, pero igual no queríamos dejarlos sin regalos, pues ellos los están esperando a la hora en la que nace el Niño Jesús. Bueno, para este año a Andrés como está en su faceta de barbero y cuando le compramos los primeros implementos, en el combo no venía la máquina shaver, entonces pensamos que sería un excelente regalo para él, pues seguimos incentivando su emprendimiento que es algo que le gusta.

In Andrea’s case, she is a girl who is starting to want to wear makeup and had been saying for a while that she wanted me to buy her some. Plus, now with so many videos on social media showing how to apply makeup, she wants to start practicing. That was one option. She is 13 years old and has always seen me wearing makeup, which I have done since I was her age, so I thought she would be very happy with her gift.

En el caso de Andrea, es una niña que está empezando a querer maquillarse y tenía tiempo diciendo que quería que le comprara maquillaje, además que ahora con tantos videos en las redes sociales donde enseñan a maquillar, ella quiere empezar a practicar. Esa era una opción, ya tiene 13 años y siempre me ha visto maquillarme y lo hago desde que tenía su edad, así que me pareció que iba a estar muy feliz con su regalo.

In addition to these gifts, we knew that neither of them had headphones, so we got some at a very good price, both the same and in the same black color, but Andrés’s were defective, so we had to go back to the store yesterday to exchange them, and he ended up choosing a different model, so now they don’t have matching headphones. Well, my children were super excited and very happy with their gifts. Their faces say it all, and the best part is that it was a total surprise. They had no idea what their Christmas gifts would be.

Adicional a estos obsequios sabíamos que ninguno tenía audífonos y conseguimos unos en muy buen precio, los dos iguales y del mismo color negro, pero los de Andrés venían defectuosos así que tuvimos que volver a la tienda el día de ayer para cambiarlos y terminó escogiendo de otro modelo, entonces ahora ya no tienen audífonos iguales. Bueno, mis hijos estaban súper emocionados y muy felices con sus regalos, sus caras lo dicen todo y lo mejor es que fue totalmente una sorpresa, no tenían ni idea de que serían sus regalos de Navidad.
