Hello, internet folks—how’s it going? Today I’d like to talk to you about another story by one of my favorite authors, Edgar Allan Poe: "The Imp of the Perverse." I found it quite an interesting tale, as the ending is rather unexpected.

The story tells of someone who commits the perfect murder: they kill another person using a candle that, as it burns down, releases a poisonous gas; the death appears natural, and the perpetrator inherits the deceased’s assets.

He keeps telling himself—over and over, with increasing frequency—that he could live a happy life having gotten away with it, provided he doesn’t commit the stupidity of confessing. Yet, this thought recurs so persistently that it eventually drives him to shout a confession to a crowd in the middle of the street; this impulse is what is known as "the imp of the perverse."

The "imp of the perverse" is essentially what we know today—thanks to Sigmund Freud—as "intrusive thoughts" or "Thanatos": repetitive, negative thoughts that drive an individual toward self-sabotage or self-destruction. Much like the protagonist of this story, who acts impulsively, contrary to both logic and his own best interests.

Although our perpetrator possesses a sharp, perceptive, and intelligent mind, it is that very mind that torments him, driving him to seek his own end—for the weight of his conscience proves too great to bear.

Obsessive thoughts are reflected in the symbolism and the narrative; the fear of losing control is precisely what causes the protagonist to lose it. His obsession with staying safe is what binds him to his past actions—compelling him to ruminate on them over and over, as his conscience keeps bringing them to the fore. Furthermore, his loss of control over his own speech—manifesting when he blurts out a confession just before collapsing—suggests a fear that he might be interrupted before he could finish, implying that, sooner or later, this outcome was inevitable.

What I liked most—aside from the striking ending—is the psychological analysis Poe provides, which was remarkably ahead of its time and, moreover, quite accurate. The horror in the story does not stem from monsters or ghosts that might appear to the protagonist; rather, it arises from something equally intangible yet truly terrifying, because it is always with us: our own subconscious.

Poe wrote the first great text on self-sabotage almost 180 years before psychology gave it a name. What fascinates me in this tale is that the murder is not the centre — the confession is. The narrator has everything: the perfect crime, the inheritance, total impunity… and the imp still pushes him to destroy himself out loud, in the street, where everyone can hear. I work a lot on that idea in my own life: the enemy is rarely outside. Great pick — this is Poe at his most modern.
