[ENG] The Citadel of Prague: Some of its Churches, streets and gardens [ESP] La Ciudadela de Praga: algunas de sus iglesias, calles y jardines
Dear friends of the communities that honor me with the reading, comments and votes of my posts. Today I want to share with you a writing and photos of the Prague Castle. On a trip like the one I had the opportunity to do in 2007; I took part of my time to enrich my spirit with the wonders that are enclosed in the Prague Castle, however, I did not take photos because of my habit of believing that professional photographers take care of it. However, I have been fortunate that my brother-in-law Alfonso ( Alfonso Celi @alfceli on Instagram ) and his wife were in Prague in 2017 and they took photos of many places in the Castle that I could appreciate in person and many others that I only had references.
Prague Castle, to which we dedicate this post, is one of the largest citadels in the world, built near the Vltava River, is made up of old palaces, fortifications, religious buildings, gardens and picturesque places, where you can see a good number of architectural styles. Its constructions have gone through the medieval Romanesque period, when the stone castle was built with several towers of which the Black Tower is preserved almost intact in the east of the citadel; later, in the Gothic period the Cathedral of San Vito was raised. King Charles IV had the roofs of the towers covered with gilded metal sheets that gave rise to the phrase "Prague City of Gold." In the Renaissance era, the Vladislav Hall, a secular vaulted room, was built. The influence of Italian art can be seen in the reconstruction that was carried out on the medieval castle, to which was added the Palace of Queen Anne, with typical Italian architecture.
Its foundation dates back to the 9th century; Since then, it has been the home of both the representatives of the Church, who built a convent next to the Basilica of Saint George, as well as the Czech sovereigns and, in recent times, the presidents. The area in which it is found is 45 ha. The Castle is considered a kind of sentinel of the city.
Inside the citadel there are several churches, the most important being the Gothic Cathedral of San Vito, built on the site of a Romanesque rotunda, it was built between 1344 and 1929. Its interior is impressive. In the Chapel of St. Wenceslas, decorated with stained glass in the Hall, which is a modern paraphrase of the mosaics of the 14th century, along with paintings and semi-precious stones. In that chapel are the remains of the patron saint; In the crypt, there are the tombs of the Czech kings and the Crown Chamber, where the Coronation Jewels are kept. In its choir is the episcopal chair, hence its name "cathedral".
The Church consists of two parts: the eastern part with the choir, the chapels and the large bell tower was erected in the Gothic period between the 14th and 15th centuries, while the western part with the transverse nave, the three naves and the portal with the towers were added in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th. Mathieu d´Arras was the first architect of the Cathedral in 1344, followed, from 1352, by Petr Parléř, until his death in1399.
The Cathedral is 24 m long, 60 m wide in the transverse nave, 37.5 m wide in the west portal, the vault is 33 m high. The main tower is 96.5 m high; the west portal towers are 82 m; the west portal rose window is 10.4 m in diameter.
The main entrance to the Cathedral has a bronze grille decorated with relief images of the calendar and the signs of the zodiac, the work of Jaroslav Horejc from 1955. The facade of the Cathedral has two towers decorated with 14 statues of saints. The rose window above the front door is 10.4 m in diameter and was created according to František Kysela's 1921 Creation of the World designs. On the south face of the Cathedral, the so-called Golden Portal stands out, created in the years 1370 and 1371, which is decorated with an Italian-type Gothic mosaic with the theme of the Last Judgment, for which around a million small ones were used. pieces of glass and pebbles of more than 30 shades of colors.
The main nave of the Cathedral is covered with a continuous ribbed vault, the work of Petr Parléř. The lower aisles are connected by 18 chapels and by the old and the new sacristy. The entire interior of the temple is surrounded by a gallery of arcades, called a triforium, famous for its beautiful series of 21 portrait busts, created by Parléř's workshop between 1371 and 1385. The Renaissance choir for musicians and singers created by Bonifác Wohlmut was built between 1557 and 1561. The royal oratory, decorated with gnarled branches, was added to the interior of the temple at the end of the 15th century by Hanuš Spiess and Benedikt Ried. The stained-glass windows in the Cathedral are from the 20th century and were designed by a group of designers, led by Max Švabinský, author of the Cathedral's largest stained-glass window with Last Judgment themes.
Inside the Castle we find the much visited and picturesque Golden Alley, which is a narrow street that is occupied by colorful houses that were built into the castle walls. These houses with a very humble aspect arose in the fortification of the castle at the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, the name "golden" is due to the fact that goldsmiths lived there during that time. The houses were inhabited until the Second World War. In house number 22 the writer Franz Kafka lived for a short time. In the Alley there is a cylindrical tower from 1496 named after its first prisoner Dalibor z Kozojed. The tower was used as a prison until 1781. The current appearance of the Alley is due to a reconstruction from 1955.
The castle gardens cannot be overlooked. The Royal Garden is the most valuable of all, it was built in 1534 by Giovanni Spatio, following Italian models and redesigned in the English style in the 19th century. The Garden of Paradise, the Garden on the Ramparts and the Hartig Garden stretch out in front of the southern façade of Prague Castle. In total the gardens cover an area of 18 hectares. In the gardens we find trees of various types. One of its most esteemed jewels is the Singing Renaissance Fountain.
In 1962 the Prague Castle with its archaeological finds was declared the No. 1 National Cultural Heritage as the most important place in Czech history.
