La Tahona Church in Caracas; a beautiful example of religious architecture

Panoramic of the Church. (Panorámica de la Iglesia). Photo taken by me

Dear friends of the communities that make up HIVE, today I have the pleasure of presenting you with a group of photos and a small text, both of my own, about a Catholic temple built in Caracas, which I hope my readers and curators, all friends, will like.

image.png
Detail of the building (Detalle de la obra)

In La Tahona, an urbanization south of the city of Caracas, a beautiful and gigantic Catholic temple has been erected, inaugurated in 1998 after two years of construction, under the name of "Parroquia Sagrada Familia de Nazaret y San Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer" better known as "Iglesia de la Tahona", due to its location in the urbanization of the same name, on la Solera street in the La Trinidad sector, jurisdiction of the Baruta Municipality southeast of Caracas. The work was designed by the architect Ignacio Benítez Suárez.

Plaza in front of the Church, recreation site for parishioners.

Although the original project to build this church dates back to 1975, the first provisional church was designed and built by the engineer Neptalí Balza in 1987 on a corner of the current land, which gave way to the current work that is now It stands on an esplanade of the aforementioned urbanization, which began in 1991 and was completed in 1997.

The central nave of the temple (La nave central del templo)

This church was financed by Catholic parishioners from all over the country, with the help of companies and even the government of the day. This joint effort, under the leadership of Opus Dei, has made it possible for today to have this temple, a haven of peace and a place for prayer for the entire Catholic family.

The altarpiece behind the pulpit in the High Altar (El retablo detrás del púlpito en
el Altar Mayor)

The work has a functional structure, with natural ventilation and very well lit, with a capacity of more than 700 people. Its three naves are separated by walls from one another, unlike most churches where they can be seen from anywhere inside. In the central nave is the main altar with an altarpiece, a work of art created in the Granda workshops, in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. This altarpiece is defined as catechetical because its figures are of a size that allow their easy identification and an immediate capture of the message that it intends to give us.

Chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Grace and Hope (Capilla dedicada a la Virgen de Gracia y Esperanza)

The church is extremely spacious both inside and around it. In front of the temple there is a wide square that also serves as a meeting place for children, young people and the elderly, where they take advantage of it for various activities. On one side of the square, almost unnoticed, there is a chapel where we could see the Holy Family in natural size.

The photos I took are witnesses of the beauty of the temple, so I hope you can fully enjoy it.

The bell tower of the church, like all the work, in brick (El campanario de la iglesia, como toda la obra, en ladrillo)

Corrugated columns at the entrance to the church (Columnas corrugadas en la entrada de la iglesia)

Left facade of the church (Fachada izquierda de la iglesia)

image.png
The main altar with its vaulted ceiling (El altar mayor con su techo abovedado)

image.png
In the right nave is this chapel dedicated to Christ with the Cross on his back (En la nave derecha se encuentra esta capilla dedicada a Cristo con la Cruz a cuestas)

View of the side of the church from the front yard (Vista del costado de la iglesia desde el patio delantero)

image.png
View of the interior of the church where you can see its floor, furniture, ceiling and his parishioners praying (Vista del interior de la iglesia donde se puede apreciar su piso, mobiliario, techo y sus feligreses orando)

Hello dear friend Benjamin. The La Tahona Church, with its contemporary design character, is definitely a welcoming landmark for the religious faithful. I'm particularly impressed with the main facade, showing a generalized beige theme for the entire edifice while exhibiting a central entrance area with a darker terracotta or brick color (as shown below). The visual contrasts are quite interesting. Receive my best wishes and warm greetings. 😊

Hello dear friend Erne, I really appreciate your comment, because in particular, it has seemed to me one of the best achieved churches in the capital city, combining architecture, design, spaces for recreation and a tranquility that is breathed everywhere, "out of the madding crowd noise", Receive a fraternal greeting.
