Seriously... don't collect data!

Sigh, one thing that I've noticed since returning back to Australia is the insane amount of data collection that goes on from companies that have no need to know anything about me. Gone to the nut shop... sign up for this and that, can we have your email, can we have your phone number, name, address... now, I always lie like crazy for all of those requests... or better still, no I don't need 20 cents off my next shop.

But the habit seems ingrained into many consumers to just hand over private information... and for the companies to just record it down somewhere... with little to no security. Big companies do this, and get "hacked by sophisticated actors...", aka... we left it in plaintext on an unsecured public server with a default admin password.

... and the little shops and companies don't have any security at all to start off with.

And the general response seems to be... ooops, we lost all your personal private information, like name, date of birth, email, phone, address... well, it sucks to be you, and sorry (if you are lucky)... and we take no responsibility.

... and then this silly merry-go-round continues.

So, given that many of these places don't need your accurate information... LIE, LIE like crazy... no real information, just make stuff up. You never really need to be contacted... ever. Or just make up a new alias... with a dump email address.

But where this fails, is when you are dealing with things that need real data. Like ISPs, or banks, or telecommunications.... and then you have to at least have some semblance of truth.

Last week, an ISP got "hacked"... I'm a bit dubious as to how much it was a "hack" as opposed to a management cock-up due to the fact that they "just don't give a crap" as it isn't their data, and they won't be liable. And probably the leaders of these places are likely not happy if their personal data was just sprayed all over the place... well, that seems like a decent, if ill-advised idea for the future...

I really wish that there was no need for companies to store data... or at least, for those that do, ENFORCE some sort of ability to protect that data properly... and not leave it to cost-cutting MBAs and CEOs to realise that the cost of losing that data is not really upon the company, and in that case, you are just wasting money on security and good practice.

Bah... and I can't wait for the day when we have zero-knowledge methods for proving what we need to prove... without companies actually needing to see anything at all.

So good to read your rant today, world has gone crazy with selling data to companies who phone knowing your name.

Block them all, I have learned to delete all mails I never asked for, block all calls with software for spammers or sales I never requested.

Has the world gone mad? This is only going to get worse, never better, at the end of day we all on someones cloud backup somewhere in the cloud!

Stranger yet, go to a hospital, the only one you have used for the last thirty years. Start filling out reams of forms to walk in the front door every time...., should that not be on the system?

Oh yes... don't get me started on the reams of waivers and all of that stuff. It seems like we have to sign away everything everytime we do any little thing.

My wife is one of those people that signs up with her legitimate information for all kinds of bullshit. I always salt my data these days or just refuse. I signed up for a store card to get some deals on a few things that we’ve come to enjoy and the employee said “oh you can download our app here and we will continue with the rest when you’re done!” I said no thanks I’m not downloading your app. She looked at me weird because I’m a younger guy, not some old dinosaur but I refused to download their app. She was like well you can get all the latest stuff on there! I said no thanks - please don’t ask me again about your app and continue that I refused. She was flabbergasted and the people in line behind me were amused but I’m not downloading some bullshit app that’s going to request access to my contacts, phone details and all that. They just sell it all and pimp me out, and I’m paying them to pimp me! Fuck that noise lol.

I’m hoping to get my wife to come to the other side of this crap! It’s truly insidious the lax measures people have with personal information.

Oh... the apps... why?!?!?!?!? I have set my wife up with a few dump emails that she can use. Sometimes, you just have to make it easy to lie your arse off!

I don't think I've encountered that over here outside of "would you like to join our loyalty program". Answer is no unless I actually go there frequently enough that it's worth it and they get the absolute bare minimum.

Hotels, and hire companies... they are pretty bad, but they get dump emails and phone numbers. Some of the emails are pretty hilarious, I was surprised that they hadn't been taken yet!
