Replacing the Ear Pads on Bose QC35s

Ahhh... these scungy looking headphones are my much beloved Bose Quiet Comfort 35s... they have travelled all around the world with me for years and years, and they have seen better days. I did have it in its case for a good chunk of that time, but as they have aged I've gotten a bit more careless with them and just jammed them unprotected into bags... and over time, that has made them deteriorate. There isn't anything wrong with the sound, but they do need to have the ear cushions replaced... and to that end, I purchased a replacement set on Amazon. Not the ones that are from Bose, but from a highly recommended third party seller.

... and this is the kit that came in the bag... two sets of ear cushions with a covering for the speakers and then a small tool for separating out cushion from the retaining clips... actually, in the end, I didn't need to use those... it was much easier to do it with your hands and fingers instead.

And there you go, you just press in on the hard plastic ring that is held back with the retaining clips. Just take care that you don't just rip the old sponge out instead of the plastic ring... it looks even gunkier like this!

And here we have the naked speaker system!

Layering on the little protective thing... I did one side at a time, so that I didn't get the L/R symbols mixed up. However, I should have taken a bit more care in checking how the cover was aligned, it isn't quite symmetric! Ah well, I did the second one right!

... and then pushing the new hard plastic ring back into and under the retaining clips around the edge. It isn't tricky one you figure out where the clips are, but push in a little bit whilst pushing down and then you hear a little click.

And there we have the clips and cushion in place!

One done...

And this time, I made sure that the cover was properly aligned... sigh, it does look better this way, and it fits the contour of the speaker housing as well!

And then the new cushions are ready to go! Actually, I was surprised how much better the headphones sound when you have proper sound isolation around your ears! Ooops, I probably should have done this ages ago... and now that I know how cheap and easy it is, I will do it more often!

Yes, definitely high quality headphones! And I'm so glad that it was just a simple repair to keep them going for many more years!
