Nintendo... really?

Ahhhhh... Nintendo have never really been well known for offering realistic pricing on their games. Sure, the consoles are usually pretty cheap in comparison to the other competitors... but the game prices are high, and really very rarely come down. So, you get lots of console hacks to load up some sweet ROM gaming... which is illegal, according to Nintendo... but I think that if they managed to offer a decent sale once every now and again, they would find that they would probably destroy that ROM scene and replace it with legally bought games.

Anyway, there was talk of a Nintendo emulator being released on the Steam Deck... but that died in the arse after there were legal threats. A pity... I lost my Switch gaming ability to my kids, and it would have been nice to recover some of those games on the Deck. Sure, many of the Switch games aren't crazily deep in comparison to the PC games that I much prefer... but they are often stunningly well crafted and beautiful to experience!

Anyway, one of my favourite games from the DS era were these Etrian Odyssey games... and now they have been released on Steam! Oh... that probably accounts for the killing of the emulator. Anyway, I loved the Etrian trilogy of games... but I had them on a hack cart... and I never ended up finishing them. Actually, I recently booted up the old Nintendo DS to see if it would still hold power in the battery after so many years of being drained flat... and it still worked, and one of the first games that I booted up was the original Etrian game!

... but now that they are released on Steam... I can now play them on the stupidly overpowered hardware (in comparison to the original DS) Deck!

I was about to get them... and then I saw the prices. Seriously, who thought that this was a good price to list games that are nearly 20 years old! I mean sure, they updated the graphics and all of that... but it is 20 years old! 60 AUD is what you would expect to pay for a new indie game, actually it is what you might pay for TWO new indie games... 60 AUD per game of the trilogy is a ripoff, and the trilogy discount bringing it to 120 AUD is still a joke!

Really... I think that Nintendo is trying to cash in on some adults with disposable income looking back with some rose-tinted nostalgia.... but I think that most people will be likely disappointed by the old now-retro gameplay and concepts. They were great for the time, but are now sort of dated in a big way.

I'm not putting that much money down when I have a huge list of unplayed modern PC games that need to be experienced. Sigh... I guess I will wait for a huge price cut before reliving my childhood memories!

Uahhahahahhah! Sony does the same. I only buy games up to 10€ so they don't have much luck with me! 🤣

I've sort of given up on buying games unless they are heavily discounted... I have too big a backlog of unplayed games already!

And here I'm never tried any Ninetendo consoles in my life. I'm really happy with PC games. 😄

Yeah, I'm a huge PC gamer as well... but the old consoles were really great for travelling. But now, a gaming laptop and a Steam Deck are much much better!

That is wishful thinking xD that wouldn't be the case though. Many people still pirate games from all developers, nintendo, xbox, PS etc.

It's not all that crazy. It's no different from a remaster. A remaster usually goes for ( or at least last gen remasters) for the same price as a brand new game. You're pretty much getting 3 remasters for $40 bucks a pop.

An argument could be made too about how these games were ds exclusive( I think) so man power would have had to go into it not only to remaster the game but to also get it working on the PC.

Yeah, I just pulled out my old DS and I still have the working ROM karts for those! It was pretty cool to see it all working fine still... even if the battery probably won't hold a decent charge any more!

Remasters are really weird... often the game systems are clunky still... and they don't really measure up to he rose tinted memories! I've taken to avoiding them...

Seeing the prices of the Etrians, it force me to think that the company wishes to earn money from that game for as long as they can.
I mean, shouldn't they just make it free so all fans gets to taste their childhood memories?

I feel relieved that I'm not a fan of these kinda games lol.

Well, I'm not sure that they could be free... but definitely a much lower price point would make more sense!

Nintendo is extremely protective of their products and they are under the assumption that the products that sell should be sold at a premium as with any 'highly sought after' item. The thing is though that it seems remarkably unreasonable due to other game companies in the same market often discounting their products for far cheaper. It's just the way the company holds itself and the services they offer. Hope you find something similar to play! Thanks for sharing.

Ah, I have a huge backlog... so, I'm not really going to miss these games! I was just hoping to be able to play them on the Steam Deck!

Nintendo is a joke with some stuff. No one is perfect, I guess.
