Insuring the Musical Instruments

Insuring the Musical Instruments.png

Sigh... insurance, a neccessary safety for the musical instruments. It is something that I've not had to call upon throughout my entire playing life, which is quite nice. Sure, it is good that you are insured for the dollar amount of your beloved instruments... but the trauma of losing a trusted partner in your life is always going to be a lot more severe than the financial loss.

Still... in the outside event that things do go bad, and something disasterous happens to one of our wooden children, my wife and I need to have the instrumentes insured... as these are also our rools of the trade, and we are seriously crippled if we don't have the adequate tools to work our trade.

Both of us have unique instruments... we have come into them after many many years of searching for that one/ones that match us and complement us... and so, if we lost one or more of them, it would be also a long search to find another replacement that would fill the void. I dread the thought of searching in Australia, where there are just much fewer instruments around... it would likely meant that we would need to take a trip over to Europe a few times in order to try out many instruments and eventually find one... which hopefully, won't cost too much!

We have been insured through an insurer in Europe for the last couple of decades whilst we were living there, and the coverage period runs out at the end of this month. So, I've been researching around to see what most of our colleagues have been insuring their instruments with in Australia... it appears that most of the musicians appear to go with EBM, and as a bonus, I get a discount due to a membership of a music group! So, I guess it is a no-brainer to start our relationship with this insurer... and they are a specialist insurer, which means that we don't get run-arounds with questions and hurdles that you might usually get with people who have no idea about ths specifics of musicians and their instruments.

I've priced up the AUD amounts from the rough estimates of the EUR valuations of our instruments... the EUR has dropped quite significantly compared to the AUD... plus, the last time we updated the valuations, it was in 2019.... and we have seen a slight inflation spike since then. So, I'm bumping up the insured values a little bit... it will sting when it comes to paying the premiums... but there is nothing worse than being under-insured when you call upon the insurer to payout!

So far, I'm holding back submitting the actual policy request... I ahve to wait for my wife to finish teaching to make sure that she agrees with my updated valuations... I'm also procrastinating because I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't want to see how much it is going to cost!

Still... at some point, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do it... we only have less than a week on our old policy... and it would really suck if something happened during an uninsured gap that was avoidable!

Ah... I might need to have appraisals done as well, but for these things, I really prefer to go with a specialist insurer.
