Happy Father...

Honestly, I don't really know when everything happened... one moment, I had two little kids... well, one little kid and one baby... and then we moved to Australia, and then all of a sudden, I have one young teenager and one little kid. And in many ways, I couldn't be happier... even if I didn't realise that I had gotten older and somehow, my kids had grown up! I still feel like a child... well, that isn't true, I still feel like a university student! But somehow, I'm supposed to be an adult and a parent... and thankfully, I haven't screwed anything up (yet...) and I couldn't be happier with my girls.

But they are growing up... and my oldest has only just started at high school. She seems to be doing well, both on the academic and social front... and she is still really nice and helpful to her parents and around the house. I do wonder how long that will last though... I do get nervous about how things will pan out over the coming five or so years of high school and college, but I do hope that we have instilled all the things that we find important... and that we can just sit back and let her live her life with minimal intervention from us!

She is already itching to be a bit more independent... and she is really almost ready for it. I guess that in the coming weeks, we will have her take the bus or walk to school by herself... and that will be a nice and important step for her (and us...).

Meanwhile, I just dropped my younger kid off to her first disco night. Last year, she was too shy and scared to go... but this year, she has found some close friends, and she was sooooo excited to go. There is something just splendidly joyous about the joy of a little kid... I do hope that she manages to hold some of that through her teenage years. It is sort of sad that we do end up losing some of that undistilled joy... I find it especially sad when musicians can't find it back.

Anyway, she was so excited that I was crazily nervous that I would get her there too late... or that the car would break down... or any number of things that would ruin her joy. She would be okay with it... much like her older sister, she is really quite understanding like that... but you would be able to see that it would hurt... and there is nothing worse that seeing your child being disappointed. The polar opposite of the joy....

So, whilst they were playing and reading and just mucking around after school... I was sitting by the computer doing my work (pfff... writing a reference for something...)... keeping an eye on the clock, and setting multiple alarms to make sure that we got to the disco ahead of time!

... and we managed! And when she saw her friends... the sheer excitement... all of them bouncing around! It was amazing! I'll now just sit in the car for an hour... I still have a concert programme to write... and hopefully, it will have been a great experience for her!
