Gutter Guarding the Roof Valley

Gutter Guarding the Roof Valley.jpg

I'm normally up on the roof every couple of months to clear out the leaves and debris from the gutters and roof as we live on a block with quite a few trees... and it does get quite messy up there. However, in the last few months, my relatives have had to borrow my ladder to help with their house construction... and that has meant that I've not been up there for quite some time... and in the last big storm, our gutters overflowed... which meant that it was time to get up there again and tidy up everything. So, I borrowed a ladder from a different relative and popped up to see what had happened...

... and in no real surprise, the roof valley was completely chockers with leaves. Sigh... so, I figured now was as good a time as any to get some leaf protection up there... I had done all the gutters, but didn't manage to get around to doing the valley.

Being the few days before Christmas... my first thoughts were to do a quick hack job with some chicken wire that I had lying around. After all, I was only supposed to be up quickly on the roof to sort this out, and then to return back to getting the house and food and stuff ready for Christmas!

But the hack job didn't seem like it was going to work at all... Sure, it would stop the leaves from falling directly ON the valley... but it seemed like more of the leaves were being swept in by water from the surrounding tiles... and doing it like this would mean that they would all just go UNDER the wire mesh. But try as I might, I couldn't get the chicken wire to dome up properly to be held in the valley by spring tension...

... and I ran out of chicken mesh before I could cover the whole valley.... which meant that I had to go to the hardware store anyway.

... and whist I was there, I found a stiff metal wire mesh that was exactly for wide gutters and valleys! Bingo, none of this hack job stuff! I would use this... and I do remember seeing it before, when I was doing the main ring of gutters... but it was considerably more expensive than the plastic one that I ended up getting... but for the single valley length, this would do!

... and as a huge plus, it all held in place by tension! This is exactly what I was hoping to do with the chicken wire mesh... but it didn't work, and so now I have this shiny new valley guard in place... it isn't a permanent solution by any means, but it does slow down the accumulation of crap in the gutters!!!

Next roof job will be to plug any small cracks in the tiles... and then try to relevel the gutters at the bottom of the valley so that they flow a bit better.

I don't think I ever really thought about what it's like to maintain a roof like that; lots of leaves to spend a good amount of time cleaning.

Sigh... it is a bit to handle, but if I'm up there every other month, then it is managable!
