Dark Magic Excercises...
As I'm getting older, I'm starting to get aches and pains... the worst of which is a lower back thing that seems to pinch on something which seems to result in pain in my foot. Generally it isn't a problem, but when I'm away from home for work and sleeping on various hotel mattresses and pillows, it gets quite aggravated. And there are times when the foot becomes so painful that it can barely support weight!
... which is a problem when you have to walk on stage! Anyway, at those moments, it is a grit the teeth moment and walk fast and confidently!
Anyway, my wife has been telling me that it is also the product of many years of not excercising regularly that is catching up to me... and she has been suggesting that it is probably a good time to start an excercise routine of some sort. I've sort had moments of half-arsed swimming, and walking, and then yoga starts... but nothing seems to really stick.
However, in the last couple of weeks, I've started doing Pilates Reformer... first as a intro session with my wife...
... and this is black magic excercising! Low impact, manageable 45 minute sessions... the studio is just down the road... and immediately after the first session, the lower back uncomfort was gone! Oh my gosh... this is truly the dark arts!
Anyway, I've immediately signed myself up for weekly lessons... and it is quite hilarious, I'm doing the beginner classes that are often doubling as the over 55s and prenatal classes. My wife does the more hardcore ones... but these are more than enough for me at the momemnt, muscles I didn't know I had are getting a workout...
... and for the first time ever, I'm feeling good and enjoying doing excercises! Although, it can be a bit weird being either the youngest person in the class... or the only guy...
... I start to feel like I've invaded a private space... oh well, I like it.. and it is good for me! So, I'm going to keep going!

That's great the exercises are helping!
I've noticed just playing four square with my son that my knee pain has gone away after a few days of playing.

With a HUGE SMILE to show how HAPPY AND EXCITED you are to perform today! x_x
I remember Middle's boyfriend saying he didn't want to do pilates because he didn't want to be in a group of middle aged women XD I think it's really cool that you're going as it might encourage more guys to go as they're probably feeling the same way, but seeing as you're there now maybe some of the other participants might be able to convince their partners who are also in dire need of intense low impact exercise to come along :)
Yay for enjoying it and that you got the dark magic immediate results and signing up for classes should help it stick too XD

Haha... yes, huge gritted smile!
Yeah, it is weirdly intimidating to be in the room with all middle-aged women... it does feel like you have invaded a space where you aren't supposed to be... but I'm sure that that is just in my head. The problem is when I'm a noob and I need to look at someone so that I can copy what they are doing...
"Huge gritted smile" sounds vaguely terrifying only because Youngest likes to pull one out every now and again very deliberately to look terrifying while asking if he looks friendly and personable XD
I remember it being a bit awkward like that once upon a time for guys in parenting/homeschool groups (bias was less in homeschool groups but still very skewed towards mums) and girls in...pretty much every field I'm in til the last five years or so where it looks like it's balanced out XD Don't worry having coached adults as well as kids most people with an operational braincell are aware of different learning styles and should be able to tell imsosorryforstaringbutineedtocopyyou from being a perv.

Glad that you found relief! A similar thing used to happen to my father before he got his herniated disk in his spine fixed. He complained of leg pain but sometimes it would just go completely numb. It caused him to fall once but he got surgery and seems fine now. Hopefully you won't need surgery.
Eeepp... that sounds really bad, hoepfully I get on top of this before it gets that far!
Pilates or Yoga seems to be the way to go. I need to get doing a bit more if it myself. I want to try and stay as flexible as possible as I get older.
I found that yoga was also good, but the lessons were longer... and I had no idea what was going on most of the time. This Pilates Reformer is much easier to understand... or maybe the teachers are better.
That makes sense. It does seem a bit more accessible than some of those crazy poses in yoga :)
