Australia is pretty famous for its beers... and some of the larger breweries are definitely quite famous all around the world, and we export that crap stuff to the rest of the world so that you can all drink it down.

Meanwhile, the local craft breweries churn out the good stuff for local consumption! Now, there is nothing better than visiting a brewery to have lunch and a beer... I do prefer dinner and a beer, I'm not so fond of drinking during the day.... but if that is what needs to be done, then it needs to be done!

Capital Brewing is one of the local craft breweries that is situated in my new hometown of Canberra. I've seen the beers on the shelves and at various restaurants, but I've not had the chance to try them out... so, when the extended family proposed a visit to the brewery, we all jumped at the chance for a nice family day out!

The Space

The indoor seating area is pretty industrial in design... There is a food "van" at one end, and the brewery pub taps at the other... but apart from that it is concrete floors, and exposed roofing... well, this is a work area after all! I'm quite fond of it, and the heating is decent enough for the colder months...

... but of course, if the weather is good, the spacious outdoor seating is definitely worth it!

The Menu

There is a ever-changing selection of home brewed beers... the selection of on offer will change depending on what they have recently brewed, and any seasonal variations. If you are after food, there are the QR codes for scanning and doing the SMS orders... a real feature of the Australian restaurant/pub scene... and something that I despise! Seriously... I'm going to start replacing some of these QR codes with Bitcoin donations.

The Food

... ahhhh... a very enjoyable Red Ale for me! I've been quite partial to the caramel tastes of Red Ales since I was in University... Pale Ales are a close second, and I have a really nice one that I just ordered a crate of. But there is something really refreshing about the red ones... I'm not entirely sure what it was, but I did want to try out the local offering as well.. and I was quite pleasantly surprised.

... decent food is always needed for a side to a beer... and the classic hamburger was more than good enough. Easy to eat, not too overloaded with extras, and not at all greasy. Definitely a worthy pairing to a refreshing red ale!

... meanwhile, the kids had hot dogs... and they were MASSIVE! Sigh, I also ended up eating about half of this one in addition to the hamburger! Really lucky we didn't order chips as well!

The Experience

Great beer, decent food... what more can you ask for in a brewery tasting experience. Now, you can order tasting racks of beers as well if you are really wanting to try out the range on offer.

The food is generally pretty good, but it isn't really a restaurant... remember that you are coming for the equivalent of pub food, and so don't bring your date for a romantic night out... unless that is more what they are into. Personally, I prefer the daytime lunch hours... but that also really depends on if you are happy drinking in the day.

Book ahead... this place is crazily popular, and you will find yourself without a table if you come during the more popular times... especially on the weekends!

I lived there for the last 15 years, my Dutch is functional... not elegant!

That's interesting!

I was just talking to my neighbour this morning. He told me his daughter is living in the Netherlands and is currently making plans to return home.

Have you wrote about any of your time spent there?

Yeah... I only got back at the start of the year, so most of my posts previous to that was from there!
