A Nice Translated Treatise Find in a Small Town

I love going into second hand bookstores everywhere... I'm always on the lookout for something interesting in the music section. Sometimes you get some interesting discarded scores of music... and at other times some interesting writings on music. Of course, there always generally a great deal of stuff that isn't really that interesting at all... but you are always looking for that little treasure. It is the same idea as walking into a random second hand place and seeing what sorts of violins that they might be trying to sell... that are actually decent things, but have no value to either the person selling it or the shop that is trying to get rid of it. Most of the time, there is nothing interesting... but that one time every now and then makes it all worthwhile.

This last weekend, I found myself in a small Australian town... and it had a little bookshop that was jam packed with lots of old and second hand books. There was a music section... and all the scores were profoundly uninteresting. However, as I was browsing through the books on music... this little thing caught my eye!

Now... to most people and even most musicians, it would be a nothing book. However, I did recognise the title and the name! This is one of the core treatises on Early Music singing from the Baroque era. Now... of course, this isn't the original manuscript, but a 20th century translation of the treatise. But it is something that is missing in my collection... well, mostly because I'm not a singer, and because I have a digital version of the writings.

... still, there is nothing better than having a physical copy of the treatise, even if it is a translation... there is just something much better feeling about having the tangible material instead of some random pdf!

Tosi was one of the foremost practitioners and writers about singing in the Baroque era... and this treatise is notable for the observations and techniques about ornamentation in singing. This is quite critical for instrumentalists as well as we attempt to mirror the style of singers in our own "speech".

So... a nice addition to my physical library... most of the stuff in there is instrumental stuff, but there is no harm in adding a treatise from the dark art of singing as well! I'm sure that I can glean and learn little tricks and tips from what the old master had to say!

Nice find! I get the same happy feelings when I find a vintage camera or phonograph that is still in working condition.
