Wednesday Walk and a bit of history (en/ua)

Hello there!

This post is a little late since it's Thursday already. Yesterday, my plans were mixed up a little due to the long air raid (3,5 hours). But that's not a problem, the main thing is that yesterday all the missiles and drones aimed at Kyiv were shot down.

Цей пост трохи запізнився, оскільки вже четвер. Вчора мої плани трохи змістились і перемішались через довгу повітряну тривогу. Але то не проблема, головне, що вчора всі ракети і дрони, ціллю яких був Київ, були збиті.

The other day we had a very nice and sunny day, last day of Indian summer. I got out of the house to meet a friend and walk around the neighborhood together. The terrain is not unfamiliar, but we chose unfamiliar trails.

We were lucky enough to see a squirrel in bushes. She was not afraid of us. We didn't have any food to lure her closer, but my friend Olya had coins in her pocket. She took a handful of coins and rang them, and the squirrel clearly liked the sound! She tried to sneak closer until she was very close. I didn't take a picture because it was too dark. In the end, we decided not to disappoint her and moved on.

На днях був дуже гарний, сонячний день. Я вибралась із дому, щоб зустрітись із подругою, і заодно пройтись околицями. Ця місцевість не є незнайомою, але ми вибрали незнайомі стежки.

Нам пощастило побачити білочку. Вона нас не боялась. У нас не було з собою ніякої їжі, щоб її підманити ближче, але моя подруга Оля мала в кишені монети. Вона взяла монети в жменю і подзвеніла ними, і цей звук білочці явно сподобався! Вона намагалась підкрастись ближче, поки не підійшла зовсім близько. Я не сфоткала, бо було занадто темно. Зрештою, ми вирішли не розчаровувати її і пішли далі.

The place where we walked is called Babyn Yar. It occupies a fairly large area.

On the approach to it, I saw some utility building. And on it was this Angel with a sword. Very beautiful.

Місце, де ми гуляли, називається Бабин Яр. Воно займає доволі велику територію.

На підході до нього я побачила якесь господарське приміщення. А на ньому був ось такий Ангел з мечем. Дуже гарний.

On the other side of the same room - a menorah with one candle almost burnt-out.

З іншого боку цього ж приміщення - менора з однією майже згаслою свічкою.

I was here for the first time as a schoolgirl. I remember how they brought us here by bus. At that time, we did not really understand what exactly happened here, when, and why. Someone was speaking and talking in the micro, but it was hard to hear in a crowd. It was November, so the weather was cold, it was raining. That's why I remembered this place from my youth as something very gloomy.

Я була тут вперше ше школяркою. Пам'ятаю, як нас привезли сюди автобусом. Ми тоді не дуже розуміли, що саме тут відбулось і коли, і чому. Хтось виступав і розказував, але було погано чути. Був листопад, тому було дуже холодно, накрапав дощ. Тому це місце мені запам'яталось із юності як щось дуже похмуре.

But now it's warm, sunny, the trees wear colorful leaves. And we have the war. Every day we receive news about mass killings and tortures. In addition, I am no longer 10 or 15. Now I perceive this place in a completely different way.

Besides, a lot has changed here. Not so long ago, a real memorial was made here.

Але зараз тепло, сонячно, на деревах різнобарвне листя. А ще зара війна. Ми щодня отримуєм новини про масові убивства і катування. До того ж мені вже не 10 і не 15. Зараз я сприймаю це місце абсолютно по іншому.

Ну й до того ж тут багато чого змінилось. Не так давно тут зробили справжній меморіал.

On September 29, 1941, mass killing began in Babyny Yar, which continued for two years. Jews were considered second class people. Once upon a time, this was the case in the Russian Empire, which established a settlement zone for them. Then it was Nazi Germany.

29 вересня 1941-го в Бабиному Яру почалися масові розстріли, які тривали протягом двох років. Євреїв вважали людьми другого сорту. Колись давно так було в Російській імперії, яка встановила зону осідлості для них. Потім це була нацистська Німеччина.

Poor people were told that they'll be resettled, and they need to come to the specified place. People came well dressed, took with them all the most valuable things. They really believed that they would be taken somewhere, because there was a railway station nearby...

Нещасним людям оголосили що готується переселення, і потрібно прийти в зазначене місце. Люди приходили добре одягнені, брали з собою все найцінніше. Вони дійсно вірили, що їх кудись повезуть, бо поруч знаходилась залізнична станція...

Executions took place daily from September 29 to October 3, and then regularly for several months. Until the entire Jewish population of Kyiv was exterminated based on their national identity. Only a few managed to survive - according to someone else's or forged documents.

Страти відбувались щоденно з 29 вересня до 3 жовтня, а потім регулярно ще протягом кількох місяців. За національною ознакою знищили все єврейське населення Києва. Тільки одиницям вдалося вижити - за чужими чи підробленими документами.

2 days ago, the occupation authorities also announced the evacuation of Kherson residents. I wonder what will happen next...

This symbolic synagogue in Babi Yar was designed by the architect Manuel Herz, who lives in Switzerland. Here is his quote:

"I believe that the Jewish understanding of space is somewhat different from others. It is closely connected with writing, with books. We can see this on the example of history, when the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, and the writing of the Talmud became the answer to this.

The Talmud is the second main book of Judaism, after the Bible. I am very interested in this, so I have repeatedly researched the connections between Judaism and space.

In the case of Babi Yar, I took this reference to a slightly different level: the synagogue works like a book. We gather and read a prayer book. It opens up a new universe of history to us."

Цю символічну синагогу в Бабиному Яру спроектував архітектор Мануель Герц, який живе у Швейцарії. Ось його цитата:

"Вважаю, що іудейське розуміння простору дещо відрізняється від інших. Воно тісно пов'язане з письмом, з книгами. Ми бачимо це на прикладі історії, коли був зруйнований Храм в Єрусалимі, і відповіддю на це стало написання Талмуду.
Талмуд – це друга основна книга іудаїзму, наступна після Біблії. Мене це дуже цікавить, тому я неодноразово досліджував зв'язки між іудаїзмом та простором.
У випадку з Бабиним Яром я переніс це посилання на дещо інший рівень: синагога працює як книга. Ми збираємося і читаємо книгу – молитовну. Вона відкриває нам новий Всесвіт історії."

The Menorah and the Road of Sorrows.

For many decades in the USSR, the fact that the absolute majority of those killed in Babi Yar were Jews was kept silent. References to Jews or Jewish symbols were hidden and eradicated. The possibility to erect a monument appeared only after the collapse of the USSR.

Багато десятиліть в СРСР замовчувалося про те, що в Бабиному Яру абсолютна більшість убитих були євреями. Згадки про євреїв або єврейська символіка ховалися і викорінювалися. Можливість встановити пам'ятник з'явилася лише після краху СРСР.

I am very saddened and disappointed by the position of modern Israel regarding the war in Ukraine. It seems that they forgot the history of their people too quickly, and now Russian money is more important to them than memory, freedom and justice.

Мене дуже засмучує і розчаровує позиція сучасного Ізраїлю щодо війни в Україні. Здається, вони надто швидко забули історію свого народу, і зараз для них гроші росіян важать більше, ніж пам'ять, свобода і справедливість.
