Museo Carmen Thyssen - Permanent exhibition - Romantic Landscape and Costumbrism 📷 Malaga - Spain

The Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga was inaugurated in 2011 and is one of the most important museums in the city.

It contains very important and transcendental art collections from the history of Spanish art, from the beginning of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

The museum consists of three floors, the first two of which are dedicated to the permanent exhibitions called respectively Romantic Landscape and Costumbrismo, Romantic Landscape and Costumbrismo and End of the Century. These exhibitions bring together works by many masters of art of different genres.

The third floor is used for temporary art exhibitions of different artists.

It has almost 300 works of fantastic art, selected exclusively for the museum. The museum is located in the Palacio de Villalon, which is a 16th century building, remodelled for the purpose of establishing the Thyssen Museum there.

The building is in Renaissance style, and the restoration took four years, with a central courtyard from which the different floors of the building can be seen.

The loan of the works of art was scheduled to last until 2025, but an extension is possible.

Due to the importance of the museum and the quantity and quality of the works exhibited in it, I decided to produce three publications on this subject and on this occasion we will visit the first floor dedicated to the exhibition Romantic Landscape and Costumbrism.

A large collection of Romantic art of the old masters of art, which brings together many famous painters of the time.

A journey through Moorish painting and architecture, gypsy, festivals, bullfighting, typical dances, landscapes of the coasts of Spain.

We find artists such as José García Ramos, Rafael Benjumea, Genaro Pérez Villaamil, Guillermo Gómez Gil, Manuel Barrón, or Fritz Bamberger, among many other great artists.

During the walk through the museum we see different romantic landscapes that constitute the root of the costumbrista landscape. Incredible views of various places in the 18th century.

The landscapes stand out with hyperbolic nature, with very good taste, a lot of harmony and style, which gave character to the painting.

Seeing all these paintings reminded me of my time of attending drawing and painting classes, getting to know these great painters of history and often painting on canvas what they had done centuries before.

A sublime conception of landscape, a documentary and picturesque interpretation.

Many of the paintings we see correspond to landscapes of Andalusia, one of the communities, together with its towns and cities, most portrayed in these paintings, compared to the rest of Spain.

Whether for its past, its architecture with different styles as mentioned above, its flamenco, bullfighting, bandits, all this was a source of inspiration for many Romantic writers and artists.

These painters, taking the above as a reference, sought to portray this custom, history and the beauty of the landscapes, finding and consolidating an artistic identity.

At the same time they were satisfying a tourist trade interest, which is why there was so much dedication to the format. This attracted the attention of foreign travellers.

The selection of costumbrista paintings by the Domínguez Bécquer and Cabral Aguado Bejarano families, as well as those of José Jiménez Aranda and Ricardo López Cabrera, together with the aforementioned artists, who, with their works, testified to the Romantic costumbrismo and the transition to preciosist realism.

This art exhibition on the first floor of the museum is truly marvellous, where every detail deserves to be admired.

On Sunday afternoons from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., when the museum closes, visits are free of charge and there are long queues for admission.

As we left the museum we came across a large shop where they sell many different items related to art, but specifically to the exhibits in the museum. All full of colour, organisation and style.

Flamenco, the tablao, fascinate me. Those paintings are wonderful.
It is always very interesting to visit these places and admire the beauty and skill that the artists show through their works.

Thank you for this visit to the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga.

Very good introduction to Andalusian romanticism, it is not difficult to follow the explanations, you make it simple and enjoyable. I have become curious, so this weekend maybe I will spend some time googling paintings of the authors you have named. Greetings and thanks
