The Alberto Suarez "Pipi" Gardens are situated in the El Palo neighbourhood, in the eastern district of Malaga city and were built in commemoration of a very well known footballer who played for Malaga, Sevilla and Real Madrid.

Taking a walk and having taken the number 11 bus, at the last stop I came across this beautiful park, which occupies a whole block, with entrances from the four streets that surround it. Very close to the beach of El Palo, its beauty surprised me.

Alberto Suarez "Pipi" died in 2001 of an asthmatic attack, when he was 63 years old and was a very well known and loved football player in the city of Malaga.

For this reason the construction of these gardens was carried out, which consist of more than eleven thousand square metres, also known as the Virginia Beach Gardens, becoming a centre for recreation and public use. It is located between Playa Virginia Street and Salvador Allende Avenue.

Within it is the Curro Román Auditorium where different cultural events are held, promoted by the town hall and the Cultural Association of the neighbourhood of El Palo, such as musical and theatrical events.

It was built in 2018, within the gardens in recognition of the career of Francisco Román García in the world of singing and performing arts and at the request of the neighbourhood, it was named after him.

One of the things that most amazed me was the pond where the sculpture of the three marengos pulling the flake is installed. This sculpture is located inside a large fountain designed with great style and beauty that attracts attention.

On the other hand, right next to the auditorium there is an area with plenty of shade, vegetation, recreation area, but above all the freshness offered by the trees stands out.

31.jpg

In the centre of the gardens there is a large, typically Spanish square for strolling.

In the year 2020 more than 600.000 Euros were spent on the restoration of the gardens, including the children's play area. A modern and picturesque design was realised and built on the hill area in the north-east corner of the gardens.

21.jpg

A small football pitch was included where there used to be a skating rink that was no longer in use.

20.jpg

22.jpg

This renovation includes slopes to create slides and high towers. The entire play area is situated under trees with large ficus canopies.

In this way a very natural environment has been created which blends in with the play area and where children can enjoy themselves together with the family. Within this environment there is a large rope pyramid, a challenging and fun game for the children.

The refurbishment also included changing all the furniture, benches, pergolas, lampposts, litter bins among other things.

Everything to do with the vegetation was completely refurbished, especially in an area where there is a large fountain, very colourful, made with typical Andalusian ceramics, in the south-east area of the site.

A new pergola was built and all the shrubs were renewed, resulting in a place for strolling, resting and beautiful views. On top of the steel pergola, wisteria has been planted.

The entire ground of the gardens was also renovated where previously it was made of brick.

The lawn areas, with plants of different species without leaving out the typical palm trees, have been planted.

36.jpg

Cleaning tasks are carried out daily, keeping the place in perfect condition, especially the water fountain where the statues are located as well as the play area.

These are beautiful gardens, and I am glad to have discovered them by chance.

I hope you have enjoyed these views, I send you all my best regards and see you next time.

¡Me gustó!

How nice it is to find such beautiful things by random chance... I imagine it's busier on weekends. The amphitheater looks comfortable with those seats and the fountain is beautiful.
I learned that only in Malaga and Granada are seamen called Marengos.

I didn't even know they were called that, there are many sculptures of them everywhere here.

When I got off the bus I said .... and this park? How marvellous... I stayed there... In reality I was looking for a far away beach where there are no more houses, where nobody lives, but that's another story hahaha for another day!
