Impetigore (2019), Thiller Movie That Show Off Indonesian Culture

If I were asked by a friend who came from abroad and was curious about Indonesian horror films, I would say that you must watch the Impetigore (2019) Movie.
This film is one of the horror films that I like, it even has its own value in my heart. Why not, this film is different from other Indonesian horror films, which only show poor quality and show jumpscare and exploitation of women's bodies. How not, films that are packaged like that are things that Indonesian horror film connoisseurs like.
Not infrequently, bad horror films are widely watched and reach 1 million viewers, there is even a new film whose story is very simple, jumpscare is too far-fetched, unattractive, sells stories about sex, but because it went viral on Twitter, the horror film got almost 10 million viewer. I just can't watch it all the way through, because it's really just a waste of money.
Opening scene
For me, this Impetigore (2019) film is very interesting. Especially at the opening of the film which is so enchanting like watching a different film. The audience was attracted and experienced a tense condition, even though the opening scene was only 5 minutes long, it felt tense like half an hour psychologically terrorized. When I first watched it, I was made to feel like I was being chased by someone I didn't know, especially in the opening scene it was more tense with the presence of a musical ost coming from an old radio with 80s-era music.
In this opening scene, we are introduced to the main character and his loyal friends, and the story starts from here, when they have to stop working because of the trauma of being attacked while working by someone they don't know, and need money so they have to find a solution to survive. In the end, the fate of the two of them was determined from this opening scene.
Do You Really Know Your Family? Storyline
This story begins when Maya and Dini go to a village, namely the village of Harjosari which is far from the city. They both went to the village and hoped to sell the only treasure left by Maya's parents. Maya wants to sell her parents' house in order to help her struggling economy, hoping that the money can be used as capital to open a clothing business that has failed due to bad luck. Instead of wanting to get money, they got new facts in the village, it was revealed who Maya's parents were, who were rich people in the village, but many strange things happened.
Almost every day, there are babies who die in the village, all those who die are newborn babies, long story short, babies who are born get a terrible curse, the baby is born without skin and all these curses have been running for 20 years.
20 years ago, the village head named ki donowongso married Mrs. Sinta who was apparently having an affair with Kisaptadi. Unbeknownst to Ki Donowongso, it turned out that Sinta had a child from Kisaptadi and was born without skin. Because Ki Donowongso loved his son very much, Ki Donowongso was willing to kill 3 girls and make the skin of the three children into puppets, instantly his son named Rohayu was healthy and beautiful, had normal skin like humans in general. However, it creates a curse in the village, so that every baby born in the village of Harjosari has no skin.
Ki Donowongso was eventually killed by Kisaptadi and also killed several other people, including his mistress, Sinta. His son, Rohayu, was sent to the city and was guarded by his aunt and uncle so he could get out of the village so he would not become the target of the villagers to be killed out of revenge.
From the story above, we can conclude that parents can do anything for their children. Even able to kill and make a pact with the devil in order to get black magic.

Tradition
In this film, the thing that becomes the highlight is the wayang kulit cultural arts. The director wanted to convey about Javanese culture that is closely related to wayang kulit. In the past, wayang kulit was one of the entertainments to entertain the villagers, where the dalang made up a story and read it to the public by playing wayang. The puppets made of leather are able to make people flock to come and be willing to spend money and time to listen to folk stories.
Very few Indonesian films show off the original culture in this country. The director, Joko Anwar, was able to make this film look very attractive with the existing traditional values. He was able to make this extraordinary work worthy of international viewing, but unfortunately, this film is not that famous, even inferior to some horror films with very boring gimmicks.
My impression after watching
In terms of storyline, this film is one of the line stories that I like because it is unpredictable, aka a plot twist, at the end of the story we only understand why all the curses in the village occur and how to overcome these curses. Moreover, what caught my attention was the role of Nyai Misni who was the center of the story, she was the mastermind behind all curses, but it turned out that she had such a big grudge. At the end of the story, it appears that this film will have a sequel, but until now, after 2 years of this film, it seems that the director hasn't said anything. So, wait and see.
For horror movie lovers who don't like too many jumpscares like me, this movie is perfect for those of you who like horror thrillers that are very gripping. The storyline is regular and the director is able to build an extraordinary ambience, horror is made slowly so that the audience becomes restless and tense throughout the film. Of course, all of that was formed with quality atmosphere and sound effects.

Good morning, indeed the story of the film arouses curiosity and interest to see that a father is able to kill other babies to save his own.
In the film, it is told that the father loves his daughter very much because he has not had children for a long time, and it turns out that the child is not his biological child.
I saw the poster a few weeks ago, but didn't pay much attention to it. I didn't know it was horror made in Indonesia. I make a note to watch it, I haven't seen a good horror movie in weeks.
