If you ask me how much RAM a person should look for in a Smartphone for Day to Day usage then I will definitely suggest a 6GB - 8GB RAM Smartphone as in your day to day use there are several instances of Multitasking and often times you keep several tabs open which usually consumes some part of your RAM. So having an excess of 2GB of RAM is usually beneficial for users who love to Multitask in your Day to Day usage.

RAM Needed for the Power Hungry Apps

Now comes the Power Hungry Apps that require a lot of RAM and these are Apps like Video Editor and many more, since they require a lot of processing that is why it is suggested to have as much RAM as possible so that you can run the Apps smoother than ever.
This category also fits into the Gaming criteria where it is suggested to have as much RAM as possible for the smoothest experience in-game.

The Bottom line is that whenever you are going to buy a new smartphone just don't go out of your way to buy the most amount of RAM offered by the smartphone, instead know your needs and buy accordingly as that will save your Money and at the same time give you more than decent performance in your smartphone.
