Taking Stock of My Garden

avatar

Hello Hive gardeners, I'm new to this community and would dearly like to be part of the inspiring like minded gardening friends. I would love to introduce myself and my garden to you.
I'm a wife, mother, grandmother and a little bit of an arty-fart; I love gardening, not the best in the West, but trying my best at it, still have a lot to learn and willing to engage with others, learning from their successes and failures.
By reading through some of the posts especially @minismallholding who's post I found to be so inspiring, I'm sure I've come to the right place to learn the tricks of the trade.
I must say though, I've been neglecting my garden a little these past few months due to covid and a little hiccup "health wise" ,but, all's well now.
Hive Gardening community has sparked my desire to take up the garden fork and spade and take stock on what needs to be done in order to bring my garden back to life again.

TREES.jpg
So!... that's exactly what I did, please come with me on a little stroll around my garden in sunny Durban South Africa.

GREEN HOUSE.jpg
Starting with my green house; nothing much is happening there at the moment, except a few green pepper plants battling a bit in the heat, a few pumpkin seeds at the back waiting to sprout through the ground. I'm hoping to plant some beans and spinach next week, the green house is most definitely priority number one.
I'd appreciate any suggestions from my gardening friends.

GINGER.jpg
I'm growing some ginger in a planter bag which hangs outside my kitchen, not sure how well they'd do there, the plants seem to be healthy and happy for now.

TOMATOES.jpg
I didn't plant these tomatoes out side my back door, they seemed to appear on their own, I think the birds had somethin to do with it Lol!
I'm not complaining, they're very welcome.

LEMON TREE.jpg
I have a lemon, lime and nartjie tree which don't seem to want to bear fruit. We planted them about six years ago and they have never produced fruit, we have tried magnesium, compost and a few other things, still no fruit, waiting in anticipation. I would love some advise on this.

CLOSE UP LAVENDER.jpg
The Lavender bush seems to be very happy and thriving.

LAVENDER.jpg
Everything else in the garden seems to be having a good time and enjoying the hot weather.

avo.jpg
Looks like we'll have quite a harvest of avocados this year.
Omg!...unlike the citrus trees.

PROPERGATE ROSES.jpg
My Rose trees aren't doing so well at the moment, think they need a little TLC, I cut them down a bit and kept the stems to propagate them. I've planted them in containers, I've had some success with this before.
Maybe my rose plants have been planted in the wrong place, they are in a very dry and hot spot, don't think they're very happy there, they look some what bedraggled.

WINDOW GARDEN.jpg
Rose trees not happy chaps in my garden, have to move them to semi shade I think.

ROSE PLANT.jpg

I propagated this rose tree from stems, I put egg shells around most of my plants to keep the snails away, they're really a pest.

orchards.jpg
My tree orchards have just finished flowering, wish I'd taken a photo of their beautiful display of colorful flowers, oh well!... next time.
The old tea pot hanging on the tree is there hoping to house a bird's nest, so far none have taken occupation yet.

Thank you for taking the time to stroll around my garden with me, I hope to get to know you all personally and learn from your expertise, enriching me with your knowledge and experience.

You've got a big garden!!! I don't have enough space but I'm planting some veggies of plastic pots.. will share them next time. and I'll share a secret with you. the first seeds that had sprouts were eaten by mice! so I'm replanting some seeds and making sure they will not be accessible by mice anymore

I'm mooning over those avocados right now! 😍

With regards the citrus trees, it may just be a case of waiting it out. When we moved into our house, there was what I thought was a little bush. It grew for a few more years before my mum said to me one day, "I didn't know you had an orange tree!" Well, neither did I. It turned out that there was indeed an orange on that little bush. It took a few more years again before I got any more than a couple of oranges on it too.

Dropping by at long last @artywink, put on the kettle for a cup of tea or start up the coffee machine so we can have a natter.
Lovely garden and I have to say it is a good idea to show off your plants and flowers. Love your big tree. Thank you for the walk around, it looks like a large garden.💜
