Shopping for a fresh fish.

Hello friends,

Yesterday my friend offered me to go with her to buy some freshly caught fish. I went with her last summer once, and it was fun experience.

As we came to the harbor where they usually sell fish, we noticed all these pelicans resting everywhere. We found out that the boats start coming around 5pm, we had still one hour to spare. So we sat on a bench, waiting for the fishermen just like those pelicans:-)

At 5 a few boats came, but they weren’t selling their fish. That made us confused. Only later we realized they were charter boats, that take people on a fishing ride, and the fish they bring is their clients’. I wish they explained us that instead of rudely saying “no fish”. Oh well, we kept waiting.

As my friend was talking about importance of preparing kids to the final exams (which is far in the future), I decided to take photos of the surroundings. Mostly I was interested in Pelicans and fish. There was one seagull sitting further away from all of us.

I enjoyed taking photos of the pelicans because they weren’t shy at all, they let me come closer, maybe they were hoping I had some fish…

Unfortunately, I didn’t have any fish, but some scraps of our fish later was given to them.

Look at those huge guys in the water. They also were waiting for scraps from our fish. I found out that it’s Tarpons. Some edible fish, but with a choices people have here no one eats them. It’s actually not that easy to catch them, so why even bother:-)

I also found out that tarpon can grow as big as 2.5 meter long, and as heavy as 160 kg.

It’s funny to realize that our fish scraps get thrown to pelicans, but if they get thrown too high, they go straight to water and then tarpons start fighting for it. Sometimes a seagull might catch it in the air. It’s like watching a football game or some other competitive sports, except of that they didn’t have teams here.

After waiting for more than an hour my friend remembered she had one fisherman’s phone number. So we texted him to ask if he had some fish and when he was coming. We didn’t remember how he looked like since last summer, but thankfully we found him. He had a big Kingfish for us, 40 lb.

Can you imagine how pelicans got excited when the fisherman was cutting and preparing our fish for us?! It was something else. Pelicans were fighting with each other, tarpons were fighting in the water, and a sneaky seagull, waiting for her chance.

It was my second fun experience, and I hope we will go there again. This time we made sure we remembered our fisherman. Next time we’ll call him in advance to avoid waiting time.

I took photos of some other fish, I think they were tuna and red snapper, but not 100% sure.

I had a hard time choosing which image to feature. Those two with the bird eating the fish were awesome too! =)

Yes, it was a cool moment to see pelican getting that fish from her sack and swallowing it😀. Thank you for mentioning in the curation report🙌.
