Hello friends,

Today I want to share photos of the dolphins that live in Sea World, in Orlando.

Did you know that dolphins are extremely intelligent and their brain development is similar ours? Dolphins have their own language, recognize themselves in a mirror, and show empathy.

The best known species of dolphin is called the bottlenose dolphin. That’s the simple grey dolphin you see in movies or shows.
Dolphin’s skin has a soft and smooth feel like a slippery river rock.

I noticed that all dolphins have different marks/scars on their skin. It’s either from fights or injures from something in the the water. The common bottlenose dolphin can live as long as 20 to 50 years! We got to meet a 50 year old dolphin in Sea World, that almost didn’t have any teeth left. Workers there said that it’s pretty rare for them to live that long.

Dolphins and whales sleep with only half of their brain. When a dolphin goes to sleep, it shuts down half of its brain and closes the opposite eye. This allows the dolphin to monitor what’s going on around them and to regulate breathing. Isn’t it amazing? It would be a pretty cool ability to have for people who work as a security at night time.

Usually dolphins have only one calf that stays with them for the first seven years of their life.

These beautiful mammals are very social and helpful animals, they live in social groups called pods. If a dolphin is injured, the other dolphins will work together to help it get to the surface to breathe. They are also known to help humans when they are in need.

Most dolphins can stay underwater for as long as 8 to 10 minutes. Some species can even stay underwater for up to 15 minutes.

Dolphins breathe through a blowhole that gets covered by a muscular flap when they go under the water. This keeps any water from getting into their lungs.
