Last weekend we travelled to Tennessee to meet with our relatives. It was first time for me going there, before I only heard about how beautiful the nature is there.

When we went to meet with our relatives, I noticed a lot of trees with pink fluffy flowers on them. They were so pretty that I took a lot of pictures of them. To me the flowers looked a bit like carnations, but carnations don’t grow on the tree.

Later I found out that they were cherry blossoms or sakura. I saw them in Knoxville and Pigeon Forge. I did some research and found out that they have annual cherry blossom festivals in Nashville, which is also in Tennessee.

Apparently cherry blossoms have been popular in America since the early 20th century. In 2008 the Japanese consulate moved its location from New Orleans to Nashville. They gave their new host city a gift of 1,000 cherry blossom trees. So I think that’s how these beautiful ornamental trees got to other cities in Tennessee.

Sakura’s white or pink flowers remain for a few weeks in early spring, usually from the end of March through mid-April. We were very lucky to come when the trees still had their flowers.

The cherry blossom is related to plums, almonds, apricots and of course, the fruiting cherry tree. It’s interesting though that cherry blossom tree, only puts out flowers and doesn’t grow fruit. However, the petals are edible, the flowers are used in pastries and other foods.
