La araña Steatoda triangulosa al acecho // The Steatoda triangulosa spider on the prowl

Dentro de mi casa me he encontrado con la imagen cruel de lo que pareciera un cementerio de insectos de diferentes familias, como: hormigas, moscas, mosquitos y hasta otras especies de arañas. Digo otras especies, porque resulta que mirando detalladamente en el borde superior de la pared pude observar a una araña que no llegaba a medir ni 1 cm de longitud, pero tenía un opistosoma redondeado y muy grande en comparación con las otras partes de su cuerpo.

Inside my house I have found the cruel image of what seems like a cemetery of insects from different families, such as: ants, flies, mosquitoes and even other species of spiders. I say other species, because it turns out that looking closely at the upper edge of the wall I could see a spider that was less than 1 cm long, but had a opisthosoma rounded and very large compared to the other parts of its body.

Su color beige y las líneas oscuras de color marrón y trazado en forma de triángulos (en zigzag) son características morfológicas muy particulares de la Especie Steatoda triangulosa, perteneciente a la Familia Theridiidae con la peculiaridad que sus quelíceros se curvan como si se tratara de unas pinzas. Lo cierto es que poseen un aparato bucal bastante robusto y sus patas vienen dotadas de dentículos para el mejor agarre de sus presas.

Its beige color and the dark brown lines traced in the form of triangles (zigzag) are very particular morphological characteristics of the Species Steatoda triangulosa, belonging to the Family Theridiidae with the peculiarity that their chelicerae are curved as if they were tweezers. The truth is that they have quite robust mouthparts and their legs are equipped with denticles for a better grip on their prey.

Resulta que la araña Steatoda triangulosa no es de las que sale a recorrer toda la casa, aventurando a ver si resulta la cacería de presas, sino que utiliza una forma de capturar a otros artrópodos mediante el acecho, esperando pacientemente en una esquina u otro lugar donde otras arañas han preparado sus telarañas. Efectivamente, esta especie de araña aprovecha el diseño de otras arañas para aprovecharse de los insectos que caen en esa red, prácticamente robándose el alimento de otra araña, si ésta se pone molesta puede correr el riesgo que la Steatoda triangulosa se la coma sin compasión.

It turns out that the spider Steatoda triangulosa is not one of those that goes out to go around the house, venturing to see if it is possible to hunt for prey, but uses a way to capture other arthropods through the lurking, waiting patiently in a corner or other place where other spiders have prepared their webs. Indeed, this species of spider takes advantage of the design of other spiders to take advantage of the insects that fall into that web, practically stealing the food of another spider, if it gets upset it can run the risk that the Steatoda triangulosa will eat it without mercy.

En las fotografías podemos observar el agujero rodeado de la telaraña y un cementerio "literal" con los restos de las incautas presas. Es importante destacar que si la presa no queda atrapada en las redes de la telaraña, la Steatoda triangulosa se dará a la tarea de lanzar un hilo de telaraña impregnado con una sustancia pegajosa que detendrá el escape del insecto "presa".

In the photographs we can see the hole surrounded by the spider web and a "literal" cemetery with the remains of the unsuspecting prisoners. It is important to note that if the prey is not trapped in the web, the Steatoda triangulosa will launch a web thread impregnated with a sticky substance that will stop the "prey" insect from escaping.
