Colonial Architecture of the city of Barquisimeto in Venezuela / The House of General Eustoquio Gómez.

I am pleased to be here sharing with all of you today. I find it fascinating the amount of reviews and very interesting posts that I can see day by day within this community. Congratulations to all the authors and the team of moderators.

Today I want to share with you some relevant data and historical aspects about some of the architecture of my city.

I live in Barquisimeto, a city located in the center west of Venezuela and one of the 4 most important cities in the country. This city was founded in 1552 which also makes it one of the oldest in the country. This city has great works of modern architecture, but also maintains standing works of architecture of 100 years.

Many of these mansions, bridges and even churches maintain a close relationship with the history of the country, since these buildings served as epicenters of political and historical events. Next I want to talk about the municipal house or the house of General Eustoquio Gómez.

This beautiful mansion is located in the historic center of the city, right in front of the main entrance of what is now known as Bolivar Square.

Relevant data.

In an urban context, the first Spanish settlers used to build their houses near the royal roads and in front of recreation and leisure places such as squares, which were almost always accompanied by a church in front of these squares, this in order to create ties and social relations.

The construction of this and many others in the area are no exception. This large house designed in colonial architecture is located right in front of Bolivar Square and a few meters from the Immaculate Conception Church.

This house was built to serve as the governor's residence, it was occupied by General Eustoquio Gómez who was cousin of the then president of Venezuela, Juan Vicente Gómez from 1908 to 1935.

Actuality.

Currently, this house is part of the heritage of the municipality and within it operates a civil registry and the headquarters of the state tourism corporation, it is noteworthy that even after almost 100 years, this house still maintains its almost original architecture, only partially remodeled to continue to keep it in optimal conditions.

At first glance you can perceive the way in which the architects of the time managed to do great work worthy of admiration today.

The house has its original spiral staircase from 1926, which was used by the governor and other members of the executive cabinet to go up to the balcony to greet the people and give their respective speeches. The beauty and the way in which this staircase is decorated seems to me a work of art, the mosaic floor that still remains in some parts of the house also seem to me great.

It has large windows and large oak doors typical of the time, its roof has tiles and an open central courtyard to provide more light to the corridors, has a central fountain widely used at the time it should be noted that these waters came from natural springs of water, but nowadays the water that emanates is by pumping pipes.

The house currently has a café that serves visitors various regional beverages, as well as various gastronomic dishes typical of the region.

Regarding the decoration, you can appreciate furniture, shelves, mirrors and even a tinajero. These tinajeros are stones that were used to purify water. The water was filtered through the pores of the stones, leaving the impurities inside and letting out fresh drinking water.

We can also see some jukeboxes which despite not being from the period I admit that I think it is a very creative idea to decorate the place and give it a more vitange look.

We will never know how many anecdotes, mysteries or history these walls hold, but what is a fact is that it is part of our identity, our roots and above all a clear indication of who we are and where we come from.
