Since ancient times, even long before I started studying, people have always wondered how old their dog is.
The truth is that there are many theories, where the one that stands out the most is: 1 year of "Human" life is equal to 7 years of dog life. However, over the years there have been many studies that show things are not that simple.
It is important to take into consideration that the animals (as in humans) age can be measured chronologically or biologically. The truth is that from the experience I have had so far listening to the opinions of several veterinarians, I have noticed that they prefer to be guided by biological age. But what is this biological age that I mention so much?
Biological age is measured by evaluating the state of the pet's physical and physiological conditions. Just as in humans, if a person smokes, eats junk food, is overweight, does not exercise, and maintains a sedentary lifestyle, eventually even if they are 30 years old, their biological age would exceed this number by a much higher one.
For this reason, it makes sense when they say: "You may be 20 years old but your health looks like 40".
The same happens to our pets, bad eating habits combined with lack of exercise and specific care, make the biological age of our pets much older than it should be.
Now, since we know that this information is of vital importance to be aware of their state of health, it is our turn to solve the second question covered in this publication:
Chronological Age

The popular theory that many knows are the one that says that every 1 human year is equivalent to 7 years of a dog's life, however, due to technological, scientific, and medical advances, many doggy pets have prolonged their life up to 16 and 17 years of age (even more) and if we use that old calculation to know the equivalent of human age, we would be assuming that a 17-year-old doggy would have the equivalent of 119 years, something that, for medicine, would not be feasible.
From the most up-to-date studies that have been done, they suggest that: the first year of human life equals 31 years of our dog's life, and every time the human years double, 11 years are added to the pet... Got it? Let's take an example below:
If we have a puppy that turns first year of age, the human age equivalent would be 31 years. Now, when the pet turns 2 years old we have the first doubling (1 to 2 years), therefore 11 more years will be added to the human age equivalent, i.e. it would be 42 years old (31 + 11). Then, upon reaching 4 years of age we would have the second duplication (2 to 4 years), therefore another 11 years would be added to the human age equivalent, at which time he would be 53 years old. At 8 years of age, we would have a third duplication (4 to 8 years), therefore adding another 11 years to the human equivalent we would have a puppy with 64 years of age. (31 + 11 + 11 + 11 = 64)
Of course, you have to take into account that this study was done on several Golden Retriever breed dogs, and we well know that large breed dogs tend to enter the old age stage much earlier than small breed dogs. So it could be said that this study is limited to large breeds, and even then, there may be variants.

In my opinion, trying to compare the chronological ages of our pets with our own is something that is not taken very seriously in the medical field. For me, if a dog is 16 years old, it is 16 years old, simple as that. It does not seem relevant to me to choose to calculate its "real" age, however, it is interesting to observe these studies that were carried out to try to reach the conclusion of this unknown that for as long as I can remember has always been asked.

Desde tiempos ancestrales, hasta mucho antes de que yo empezara a estudiar, las personas siempre se han preguntado que edad tienen sus compañeros perrunos.
La verdad es que existen muchas teorías, donde la que más destaca es la que nos dice que 1 año de vida "Humano" es igual a 7 años de vida de perro. Sin embargo, al pasar los años se han realizado cantidades de estudios que nos indican que las cosas no son tan simples.
Es importante tomar en cuenta que en los animales (al igual que en los humanos) la edad puede medirse de manera cronológica o de manera biológica. Lo cierto es, que por la experiencia que hasta ahora he logrado obtener escuchando las opiniones de varios médicos veterinarios, he notado que prefieren guiarse por la edad biológica. ¿Pero que es esta edad biológica que tanto les menciono?
La edad biológica se mide evaluando el estado de las condiciones tanto físicas como fisiológicas de la mascota. Al igual que en los humanos, si una persona fuma, ingiere comida chatarra, tiene sobrepeso, no hace ejercicio y mantiene una vida sedentaria, eventualmente así tenga 30 años, su edad biológica sobrepasaría este número por uno mucho más alto.
Por esta razón, cobra sentido cuando dicen: "Tendrás 20 años pero tu salud parece de 40"
Así mismo ocurre en nuestras mascotas, unos malos hábitos alimenticios combinados con la falta de ejercicio y de cuidados específicos, hacen que la edad biológica de nuestras mascotas sea mucho mayor de lo que debería.
Ahora bien, ya que sabemos que esta información es de vital importancia para estar consientes de su estado de salud, nos toca solucionar la segunda incógnita que abarca esta publicación:
La Edad Cronológica

La popular teoría que muchos conocen es la que dice que cada 1 año humano equivale 7 años de vida de perro, sin embargo, debido a los avances tecnológicos, científicos y médicos, muchas mascotas perrunas han prolongado su vida hasta los 16 y 17 años de edad (incluso hasta más) y si utilizamos ese viejo cálculo para saber el equivalente a la edad humana, estaríamos suponiendo que un perrito de 17 años tendría el equivalente a 119 años, algo qué, para la medicina no resultaría factible.
De los estudios más actualizados que se han realizado, sugieren qué: el primer año de vida humano equivale a 31 años de vida de nuestro perro, y cada vez que los años humanos se dupliquen, se le suman 11 años a la mascota... ¿Entendieron? Pongamos un ejemplo a continuación:
Si tenemos un perrito que cumple su primer año de edad, el equivalente a la edad de un humano sería 31 años. Ahora bien, cuando la mascota cumple 2 años tenemos la primera duplicación (1 a 2 años), por lo tanto se le sumarán 11 años más al equivalente de edad humano, es decir que tendría 42 años (31 + 11). Luego, al cumplir los 4 años de edad tendríamos la segunda duplicación (2 a 4 años), por lo tanto se le sumarían nuevamente otros 11 años al equivalente en edad humana, en ese entonces tendría 53 años. Al cumplir los 8 años de edad, tendríamos una tercera duplicación (4 a 8 años), por lo tanto al sumarle otros 11 años al equivalente humano tendríamos un perrito con 64 años de edad. (31 + 11 + 11 + 11 = 64)
Por supuesto, tienen que tomar en cuenta que este estudio se hizo en varios perros de raza Golden Retriever, y bien sabemos que los perros de raza grande tienden a entrar en la etapa de la vejez mucho más temprano que los de raza pequeña. Por lo que se podría decir que este estudio esta limitado a las razas grandes, y aún así, pueden haber variantes.

En mi opinión, intentar comparar las edades cronológicas de nuestras mascotas con la de nosotros, es algo que no es muy tomado en cuenta en el ámbito médico. Para mí, si un perro tiene 16 años de vida, tiene 16 años de vida, así de simple. No me parece relevante optar por calcular su edad "real", sin embargo, es interesante observar estos estudios que se realizaron para intentar llegar a la conclusión de esta incógnita que desde que tengo memoria siempre la han preguntado.

Es decir que mi perrita está muuuuy vieja... Tiene 10 años y según tus cuentas serían 130 años.

Hola, no. Ahí explico qué según el estudio, un perro de 10 años tendría aproximadamente unos 64 años (o un poquito más).
De todas formas ese estudio fue hecho en perros de raza Golden retriever. Así que si tú perrita es de raza pequeña probablemente no sirva de mucho jajaja
Yo soy más regirme por la edad normal que tienen, es decir, si tú perrita tiene 10 años, entonces tiene 10 años, así de simple. (Que ya esa edad se considera geriátrica )
Qué interesante artículo. La verdad siempre me ha causado curiosidad la cuestión sobre la edad de las mascotas y no solo de los perritos, sino también de gatos y de algunas aves. Para los que tenemos mascotas y las cuidamos, este dato es importante para así vigilar la salud de nuestros animalitos.
Si, ya cuando están en la etapa geriátrica hay que tenerles ciertos cuidados adicionales, exactamente lo mismo que con nuestros abuelitos jaja
