Tengo un pequeño refugio en el patio de mi casa llamado "La bendición de Dios" donde albergamos animales que son abandonados por sus dueños, que están en peligro sus vidas y su salud. El día 15/09/2.021 recibimos a 5 conejos adultos y como ya es costumbre los llevamos al veterinario, la Doctora Adriana Suarez para su revisión, control médico, sus exámenes de rigor y luego ponerlos en cuarentena para así mantener a los animales que ingresan y los que ya están en el refugio con buena salud.
I have a small shelter in the yard of my house called "God's blessing" where we house animals that are abandoned by their owners, their lives and health are in danger. On 09/15/2021 we received 5 adult rabbits and as usual we took them to the veterinarian, Dr. Adriana Suarez for their review, medical control, their rigorous examinations and then put them in quarantine in order to keep the animals that entered and those who are already in the shelter in good health.
A los 3 días nos dimos cuenta de que una de las conejas de los 5 que estaban en cuarentena, tenía algunas lagañas y sus parpados superiores estaban algo inflamado. Esto nos despertó el alerta, porque cuando hay lagañas más abundante de lo normal, es signo de infección ocular u otras enfermedades más complejas. De inmediato la volvimos a llevar al veterinario para una segunda revisión.
After 3 days we noticed that one of the 5 doe who were in quarantine had some lagacies and her upper eyelids were somewhat swollen. This awakened us the alert, because when there are more abundant lagañas than normal, it is a sign of eye infection or other more complex diseases. We immediately took her back to the vet for a second checkup.
La medico veterinaria Adriána Suarez, le receto Terramicina en crema y azitromicina en 2 dosis, una dosis diaria y a colocarla en aislamiento total. Al día siguiente la coneja tenía aun más lagañas y estaban más inflamados sus parpados. Decidí llamar por teléfono a la Doctora y ella recomendó seguir el tratamiento por 2 días más. La hidratamos con sueros de zanahoria, le dimos concentrados alimenticios y agua limpia hervida.
The veterinary doctor Adriána Suarez, prescribed Terramycin cream and azithromycin in 2 doses, one daily dose and to place her in total isolation. The next day the doe had even more mischief and her eyelids were more swollen. I decided to call the Doctor by phone and she recommended continuing the treatment for 2 more days. We hydrated her with carrot serums, gave her food concentrates and boiled clean water.
Estábamos muy alerta y preocupados, porque hace aproximadamente un año atrás recibimos varios conejos que tenía una enfermedad llamada Mixomatosis que en la mayoría de los casos es mortal, muy infecciosa y fácil de transmitir a otros animales, todos estos conejos que ingresaron enfermos algunos murieron y otros los tuvimos que sacrificar para evitar la propagacion del virus. Al pasar los 3 días la coneja estaba empeorando su salud. Sus ojos estaban cada vez con más secreción verdosa, la base de sus orejas se estaban inflamando, sus parpados se inflamaban cada dia más, sus genitales se estaban irritando e inflamando y la fiebre no cedia.
We were very alert and worried, because about a year ago we received several rabbits that had a disease called Myxomatosis which in most cases is fatal, very infectious and easy to transmit to other animals, all These rabbits that were admitted sick, some died and others had to be slaughtered to avoid the spread of the virus. As the 3 days passed, the doe was deteriorating her health. His eyes were getting more and more greenish discharge, the base of his ears were inflaming, his eyelids were inflaming every day, his genitals were becoming irritated and inflamed and the fever did not subside.

La Doctora Adriana fue al refugio a revisar la coneja enferma y a los conejos sanos y confirmo lo que ya temíamos. Había llegado la Mixomatosis al refugio nuevamente, me llené de pánico y decidí calmarme y pensar. Porque ya se lo dificil y riesgosa que es la mixomatosis.

Teníamos 2 opciones: Sacrificarla para evitar que la mixomatosis se propagara a los animales sanos o intentar ayudar a la coneja enferma.

We had 2 options: Euthanize her to prevent myxomatosis from spreading to healthy animals or try to help the sick rabbit.
Comienza la fuerte batalla.
Me reuní con los otros miembros de mi familia y después de discutir al problema. Decidimos ayudarla. Corríamos el riesgo de que la enfermedad se propagara a los otros animales.
The strong battle begins.
I met with the other members of my family and after discussing the problem. We decided to help her. We ran the risk of the disease spreading to other animals.
Hicimos una jaula muy cómoda para ella y la cubrimos con una tela especial para que no entraran los mosquitos, moscas o zancudos, se designó un solo cuidador para ella y fue aislada muy lejos de los otros animales.
We made a very comfortable cage for her and covered her with a special cloth so that mosquitoes, flies or mosquitoes did not enter, a single caregiver was appointed for her and she was isolated very far from the other animals.
El cuidador de la coneja seria yo, para evitar que otras personas de forma accidental al entrar y salir pudieran propagar la enfermedad por todo el refugio. Para ello hicimos una bandeja con una esponja, con óxido de calcio o cal e hipoclorito de sodio o cloro y la coloqué en la entrada de su lugar para empapar las botas al entrar y al salir, decidi entrar sin objetos personales (celular, anillos, reloj, etc.) para evitar el contagio en ellos y asi sacar la enfermedad de su lugar de cuarentena.
I would be the keeper of the rabbit, to avoid that other people accidentally entering and leaving could spread the disease throughout the shelter. For this we made a tray with a sponge, with calcium oxide or lime and sodium or chlorine hypochlorite and I placed it at the entrance of its place to soak the boots when entering and leaving, I decided to enter without personal items (cell phone, rings, clock, etc.) to avoid contagion in them and thus remove the disease from its quarantine place.
Medicamentos usados y dosificaciones.
Todo el procedimiento, administracion y dosificacion de medicamentos estuvo bajo la supervision de la veterinaria Adrina Suarez. La comencé a hidratar de forma constante de manera intravenosa con fluidos, le administré azitromicina una dosis de 2,5 cc diaria por 5 días de forma oral (antibiótico), una dosis de levofloxacina de 250 mg (antibiótico) diaria solo la teníamos en comprimidos y la diluí en agua hervida y se la administré con una jeringa desechable de forma oral, una dosis única de 0,8 cc de ivermentina (antibiótico) subcutánea, diclofenac potásico de 50 mg en comprimidos (desinflamatorio/analgésico) le administre 25 mg cada 8 horas para calmar la fiebre y el dolor y sueros caseros de zanahoria, azúcar y sal de forma oral.

Los 6 días posteriores de comenzar el tratamiento, solo veía avances de la enfermedad y me comenzó a envargar la duda, pero al 9 día vi que las lagañas ya no estaban en abundancia, su vagina no estaba roja y estaba alimentándose sola. Me alegre mucho y llame a la Doctora para darle la noticia. Ella recomendó volver a repetir todo el tratamiento y al día 17 sus genitales que estaban al principio muy inflamados, ya estaban casi normal de tamaño y color, ya no había lagañas, sus orejas ya era de color y tamaño normal, su nariz, boca y lengua se estaban desinflamando, pero aun había fiebre.
Beginning of victory.
The 6 days after starting the treatment, I only saw progress of the disease and I began to doubt, but on the 9th day I saw that the lagañas were no longer in abundance, her vagina was not red and she was feeding herself. I was very happy and called the Doctor to give her the news. She recommended repeating the entire treatment and on the 17th day her genitals, which were at first very swollen, were already almost normal in size and color, there were no more lagañas, her ears were already of normal color and size, her nose, mouth and tongue was flaking, but there was still a fever.
Le comenzamos a administrar amoxicilina de 250 mg 2 veces al día, una dosis de 1 cc de vitamina "B" por 5 días una dosis entrediría y ácido folico 10 gotas diarias, en esta etapa la hidrate, pero con menos frecuencia. Siempre utilice las medidas sanitarias necesarias para evitar propagar la mixomatosis en el refugio y tambien cuidar mi salud.
We began to administer amoxicillin 250 mg 2 times a day, a dose of 1 cc of vitamin "B" for 5 days, one dose would interfere, and folic acid 10 drops daily, at this stage it was hydrated, but less frequently. Ya en su día 25 del fuerte tratamiento, ya la coneja está casi normal, solo perdió mucho peso corporal y decidimos llamarla "Luna" porque renació y estamos muy contentos de darle una segunda oportunidad de vida. La enfermedad de la mixomatosis se detuvo por completo en su cuerpo. Aun hoy dia está en cuarentena la podemos ver comer pasto, concentrados alimenticios y frutas.
Already on her 25th day of the strong treatment, the rabbit is almost normal, she just lost a lot of body weight and we decided to call her "Luna" because she was reborn and we are very happy to give her a second chance at life. The myxomatosis disease completely stopped in her body. Even today she is in quarantine we can see her eating grass, food concentrates and fruits.
