Tuesday, 11/2/21 — Wilkerson Pass, CO — Sad gray morning

wilkerson.jpeg

The sad gray morning arrived and I awoke to the sound of a vehicle groaning its way by me on the dirt road next to where I'd parked my car. I sat up and tried to rub some sense into my tired scratchy eyes as I watched it go rocking and rolling away through the window into wherever. Where am I and what am I doing here. I wrestled my way out of my sleeping bag and opened the door. Picked up my socks and shoes from where I'd apparently tossed them on the ground the night before. They were covered in frost but not quite frozen so I shook them out and put them on. Cold feet. I stood up and walked a few paces away, unzipped and took a piss in the firepit. Looked around. There is trash everywhere. Don't know where I am or what I'm doing here but someone really needs to come clean up all this trash sometime real soon.

I climbed up to the high point directly above my car campsite and took a picture and then I stood there for a while staring at the grand surly expanse of earth and sky stretching itself out before me, wondering where it all went wrong and what in fuck I was doing with myself.

For reading is beyond the realms of man and to tread beyond the realms of man is to eat from the gilded cage.
