¡Argentina lo volvió a hacer! Remonta y se enfrentara ante un gigante asiático en los octavos | Mundial de futbol femenino Sub-20 Polonia 2026 (Esp - Eng)

Buen día, tarde o noche para los amantes del #futbol de @fulldeportes. Ayer estuve haciendo crónica previa a los partidos de octavos de final de este mundial femenino de futbol Sub-20 Polonia 2026 y hoy no es la excepción, son tantas cosas que quiero compartir, pero es imposible hablar de todos en un solo post. Por esto voy sacando lo que para mí es lo más relevante de todo lo que acontece. Hoy quiero focalizarme en la albiceleste, porque también es uno de esos equipos que representa a Suramérica en este mundial.

Yesterday, I wrote a preview of the Round of 16 matches for the 2026 Women's U-20 World Cup in Poland, and today is no exception; there is so much I want to share, but it is impossible to cover everything in a single post. That is why I am highlighting what I consider the most relevant aspects of the ongoing action. Today, I want to focus on La Albiceleste, as they are one of the teams representing South America in this World Cup.

Argentina llega a estos octavos con una sensación bastante curiosa. Después de arrancar perdiendo 3-0 contra Polonia, muchos seguramente pensaron que la Albiceleste iba a quedar complicada, pero la reacción fue tremenda: apareció un 8-0 contra Benín y luego un 3-2 ante México en un partido donde se jugaba prácticamente la vida. ¡Claro! que no hay que dejar de un lado que la selección de Benín prácticamente fue un equipo muerto, no quiero ser grosero ni nada por el estilo, pero fue un bulto en el grupo, futbolísticamente hablando fue así. Lo que más me gusta de este equipo y típico de todas las categorías de futbol argentino: cuando parecía que estaba contra las cuerdas, respondió. Ahora viene Corea del Sur y ya no hay margen para equivocarse.

Argentina heads into the Round of 16 with a rather curious feeling. After starting with a 3–0 loss to Poland, many surely thought La Albiceleste would be in trouble, but their response was tremendous: an 8–0 thrashing of Benin followed by a 3–2 win over Mexico in a match where their tournament life was practically on the line. Of course, one cannot overlook the fact that the Benin squad was essentially a dead team—I don't mean to be rude or anything of the sort, but they were a pushover in the group; from a footballing standpoint, that is simply the reality. What I like most about this team—and what is typical of all Argentine football squads—is that when they seemed to be against the ropes, they stepped up. Now comes South Korea, and there is no longer any margin for error.

Corea tampoco llega de paseo. Empató 1-1 con Francia, perdió 3-1 contra Ghana y después consiguió recuperarse venciendo a Ecuador para meterse en octavos como segunda de su grupo, por un momento pensé que Ecuador se metería también en los octavos, pero simplemente quedo corto. Es un equipo que ya demostró que puede competir contra selecciones fuertes y, además, tiene esa característica de los conjuntos asiáticos que suelen ser ordenados, rápidos y bastante incómodos cuando encuentran espacios. Para Argentina, el reto va a estar justamente en no regalar la pelota y evitar que Corea pueda manejar el partido a su ritmo, literalmente si argentina no incomoda defensivamente a estas chicas de Corea del Sur créanme que les va a ir pésimo.

Korea isn't just here for a casual outing, either. They drew 1–1 with France, lost 3–1 to Ghana, and then bounced back by beating Ecuador to reach the Round of 16 as group runners-up—for a moment, I thought Ecuador would make it through too, but they ultimately fell short. This team has already proven it can compete against strong squads; furthermore, they possess the typical traits of Asian teams: they are disciplined, fast, and pose a real threat when they find space. For Argentina, the challenge lies precisely in not giving away possession and preventing Korea from dictating the tempo of the match; quite simply, if Argentina doesn't make life difficult for these South Korean players defensively, believe me, things will go very badly for them.

¿Quién tiene el reto más complicado? yo diría que Argentina, pero tampoco veo una diferencia enorme entre las dos. La Albiceleste tiene algo a favor: viene con confianza después de dos victorias consecutivas y sabe lo que significa jugar un partido de eliminación directa. Corea, en cambio, llega con cierta irregularidad, pero también con la tranquilidad de haber sobrevivido a un grupo bastante competitivo. Para mí, Argentina tiene que salir con inteligencia, no entrar en desesperación y aprovechar la efectividad que mostró ante Benín y México.

Who faces the tougher challenge? I’d say Argentina, though I don’t see a huge difference between the two. La Albiceleste has an advantage: they come in with confidence after two consecutive wins and know what it takes to play a knockout match. Korea, on the other hand, arrives with somewhat inconsistent form but also the peace of mind that comes from having survived a very competitive group. To me, Argentina needs to play intelligently, avoid desperation, and capitalize on the clinical finishing they showed against Benin and Mexico.

Y aquí está lo bonito de estos octavos: Argentina tiene una oportunidad histórica. Hasta ahora, su mejor actuación en un Mundial Sub-20 femenino fue precisamente alcanzar los octavos en 2024, así que superar a Corea del Sur significaría meterse por primera vez en unos cuartos de final. Yo no descartaría para nada a la Albiceleste. No llega como favorita absoluta, eso está claro, pero después de la remontada que protagonizó ante México, sería un error mirar a este equipo por encima del hombro. En estos partidos, más que el nombre, pesa quién tenga la cabeza más fría cuando llegue la hora de la verdad, de mi parte mucha suerte para argentina.

And here is the beauty of this Round of 16 tie: Argentina has a historic opportunity. Up to this point, their best performance at the Women's U-20 World Cup was reaching the Round of 16 in 2024, so beating South Korea would mean advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time. I certainly wouldn't count La Albiceleste out. They aren't coming in as the clear favorites—that’s obvious—but after their comeback against Mexico, it would be a mistake to underestimate this team. In matches like these, it matters less what the name on the jersey is and more who keeps a cool head when the moment of truth arrives; I wish Argentina the best of luck.
